Mayday! Mayday! Spring is missing? Where did it go?
We zoomed from our chilly Spring weather to a whopping, summery-feeling 85 degrees – whew! The weatherman said it was the first time we hit a temperature of 85 since October 3rd. When I heard that, I agreed it was a long time; he later added it had been 210 days. But really?! We went from almost Winter-like temps to July or August temps in one day!
I had a spring in my step when I departed for my walk. It was breezy this morning and felt good walking with my hair in a loose top knot, the soft breeze teasing the tendrils around my face and airing out my brain. I thought I needed a jacket, and did not, and ended up looping it around my waist, so it did not hinder any feeding and picture-taking activities at the Park. Perhaps I need to have my mother dress me as that expression goes, since I’m having a difficult time finding a happy medium for what to wear these days, and I believe that mindset comes from dressing like Nanook of the North all those months.
This first warm day is to be savored, especially after the Winter and Spring we’ve just endured. As I crossed the parking lot at Council Point Park, I noticed how many vehicles were there. It was not only the usual walkers or joggers, but today the path was shared with pooches, bicyclists and baby strollers.
The greening of Council Point Park is finally coming to fruition, with a few more saplings unfurling their tender leaves.
In the neighborhood, the ornamental bushes and trees suddenly are dripping blossoms from every branch. Today I saw forsythia bushes and weeping cherry and magnolia trees.
Creeping phlox, daffodils, tulips and hyacinths now appear in dribs and drabs, poking their colorful blooms through soil and unkempt-looking mulch beds.
While there are not fifty shades of Spring on this first day of May, we’ll breathe a collective sigh of relief because we know the best is yet to come.

Yes, all at once from the sudden burst of heat … no regular tree leaves quite yet, but getting there. 🙂

Now you finally start getting spring!😊 Both shrubs and trees begin to grow green. Here the Japanese cherry trees bloom for fully, unfortunately, the flowers do not stay long on those trees, but beautifully it is.

Yes, and today very warm, if not hot, like an August or July day! We are having a gusty storm on Thursday which might knock those blossoms off the trees unfortunately … beauty for one or two days only.

And all at once Melanie – our second day in the 80s … I went out this morning in just a tee-shirt … on Sunday I had a woolen headband to keep my ears warm and wool fingerless gloves for taking pictures. It is almost surreal.

It sure is amazing – it is like everything has come alive again. In a cold-weather state, when the real Spring arrives it always feels like nothing short of a miracle. Enjoy it! I guess you were unscathed by the bad weather yesterday so that’s a good thing. We are still on target for stormy weather (severe tomorrow) beginning at 8:00 tonight and through mid-day Friday. The trees will come out for sure. Speaking of trees, did you see John Jonasson’s tree hugger post or are you still wading through “Reader” – now that is a cool tree. I love to see the different looks of spring in various parts of the country. We don’t have forsythia bushes here but I’ve always appreciated their yellow exuberance. Enjoy your warm weather… and your thunderstorm!

That thunderstorm is just rolling in as I write this … we already had the torrential rain, now it is just rumbling. Not as much rumbling as the earthquake from two weeks ago. Our earthquake was nothing compared to California, but a 3.6 if I remember correctly. Just like the song says “I feel the earth move under my feet” … it was incredible.

Oooh, look at all your pretty signs of spring! Ours are, shall we say, slightly delayed – although if I squint hard I can maybe see a tiny speck of purple here or there. How the heck are the lilacs ever gonna bloom in time for their usual 3rd-week-of-May appearance? Hm. We’re getting thunderstorms this afternoon – I think they were yours! 😀 Also severe winds predicted for tonight. Sighhh.

I thought I was telling you something and here you were ahead of me … I don’t know why they mentioned Montreal? Our winds are finally gone and the sun is out, but the wind (I believe) wreaked havoc with our computer system internet – I was on the last paragraph of my “rush” and lost my connection and tried to remote into Robb’s computer – also down. Grrrr. I hate severe weather and once we got that heat wave, I am not surprised we had such raucous storms.

Sheesh! Our rainstorm was over practically before it started! The winds hit southern Ontario with a vengeance but didn’t get here yet.
