… NO walk in the park, as that expression goes. I detest this hot weather, despite gritting my teeth and scowling at each shovelful of snow hefted and every ice pellet that stung my face through an overly long Winter and cold Spring. Yes, I swore I would not complain come Summer when temps soared and humidity made me want to melt into a puddle on the ground.
This is day #6 of the heat wave, once again with the scorching temps and high humidity. Singer Jimmy Buffett makes a gentle island breeze and the tropical clime sound oh so inviting and fun. Sadly, I’m somehow missing the feel-good of the tropics with this weather though.
The heat may be hindering any painted rock drops at the Park these days. I’ve not seen any of the colorful beauties at Council Point Park, so perhaps kids and parents are painting away, but not heading out in these searing temps, hoarding them instead in air-conditioned homes until the weather is just right for placing and discovering. We will get a small reprieve in the heat this weekend, so I’ll be on the prowl for all those pretty rocks to surface.
However, I did glimpse this Old Glory painted rock across from Council Point Park a while ago and saved the photo I took of it for today’s post. My friend Ann Marie painted many flag-inspired rocks and hid them around Council Point Park last Summer.

I am still going through Reader – my goodness everyone had a post today. It sounds like a war zone here too and a few minutes ago, one was so loud, I swear it landed on the roof. It is not even dark yet here for another 1/2 hour. Our Governor allowed the large firecrackers/fireworks a few years ago – he said “revenue for Michigan – people drive to Ohio to the big tents for their fireworks – bring ’em here!” OMG – now we have fireworks in the ‘hood every weekend since before Memorial Day and ’til Labor Day. Some weeknights as well.
Your poor head – all that sun. Aloe vera gel to cool it off. Been there with many a sunburn back in the day since I am fair-skinned.
A few more days left on your vacation – four more days to enjoy your holiday. Happy Fourth to you too Uncle Tree!

Thanks Susie … the rock hunting and discovering will pick up if the weather ever gets cooler … we have Friday- Sunday where it will be nice weather, cooler, and then heat again. I did not walk yesterday at all. It was very hot, but my handyman was coming to clean the gutters and do some other tasks (tarring, cementing and replacing a lock) so I stayed home to be there for him. I am hoping today though. Last time I walked I saw some baby squirrels – they did not know me and very skittish. Stay cool at your end!

I figured you would recognize that rock Ann Marie as you did so many of them last year. Meeta and you were ambitious. Actually I was going to walk, but my handyman did the gutters and some tarring and cement patching yesterday … he is doing a big remodeling job for someone (kitchen) and was off that job for one day for the holiday, so he came over to do the gutters in the morning … by the time he left, it was way too hot to walk, so I did housework instead. Then took the rest of the day off. He was soaking wet from sweat from being up on the roof – he is a hard worker and it was so hot up there! Today is the last day of this heat, then a three-day break, and back at it Monday … 90 degrees again. Whew!

Haha! We complain when it’s too cold and complain when it’s too warm. If only the weather could be perfect, life would be great. Thank you for sharing the painted rocks and best of luck finding more when the heat wave breaks.

Janis – that is me to a “T” even though I said I would not complain. It is now a week since this big heat wave. I am looking forward to Friday through Sunday with a little cooler temps and no humidity. The painted rocks are very unique and these were bigger ones but across from the Park near where I saw the cats.

Happy 4th July!😊 You have a great tradition to celebrate the national day, which we don’t have here in Sweden. It’s a holiday but not until 2005. We have also soooo hot about 90°F in the shadow, much over 105°F in the sun.

Thanks John – they have been celebrating in the neighborhood with fireworks nearly every night since Memorial Day Weekend … and until midnight last night. Big boomers too … sounded like they were lighting firecrackers on my roof. Oh, that is wicked heat for you – worse than for us. Yesterday my handyman came to do the gutters and some tarring and cement work. He is on a three-week inside kitchen remodeling job but did the gutters here yesterday morning as he was off the remodeling job for the one day holiday. I couldn’t have him earlier as the trees never leafed out and lost their seeds until mid-June. He was up on the roof checking shingles/chimney and tarring around chimney in all that heat … I don’t know how people work in the heat. He looked exhausted by the time he was done. I told him it could wait, but he said he is used to working in the heat. Today is our last day of intense heat, a storm this afternoon/early evening then cooler for three days then back to sauna-like conditions again.

I think our heat index was just 100 yesterday, but when I got up this morning at 4:30, it was 78 degrees already, with high humidity. I am looking forward to Fall as well Rebecca … they say we will have a stifling-hot July. We get a brief reprieve this Friday through Sunday after a storm (hopefully not severe) later today. Stay cool!

I remember heat waves from the past.I’d shower a lot & sleep down in the basement where it was much cooler.Thats where I got the idea to build a house & cover it with soil.Build it into a hillside.Cooler in the summer & warmer in the winter.I’d also plant some deciduous trees in front.During the summer the leaves would shade me but in the winter allow the suns heat to come through.

That’s a good idea and a “green” house would be the way too go for natural cooling and warming, as opposed to depending on your energy provider … we have a storm rolling in now … I just shut off the A/C and it is not severe but some risk with high winds and right now we have torrential rain going on. I hope the power does not go again.

Happily, nothing happened this storm – I was concerned after the last time, even though the energy provider (DTE) said it was a result of the overuse of electricity. We hit 96 yesterday – it was a scorcher. Today and two more days of blissfully cooler weather.

we don’t get lightening very much over our way.Coastal areas rarely do.You need land under the clouds for a charge to build up.Nothing better than a good old fashioned loud & entertaining lightening storm!

I am glad you have a partially restored internet … I have Comcast and I don’t have internet issues, but I use their web-based e-mail and it is fractious … sometimes you have a whole day with no issues, and the next day you either can’t get on, or can’t open messages and always fun – you can’t reply! I hate we are so dependent on the internet anymore. Hope they figure out what’s wrong and fix it permanently for you soon Tom.

Yes, I did – very hot though – 100 heat index … we are having heat like you are in the U.K. The painted rocks idea really took off last year. The kids and parents would paint them, then hid them in the various parks, then people would take a photo and show the rock(s) they had found, then either keep or rehide them. They have many Facebook sites of people doing this in other states as well.

It was nice to be off for the day Ellie, but it was so hot it was not really an enjoyable day to be outside. Those rocks were at the same house – they had another one I took a photo of … a cupcake and very unique looking.
