… for a couple of days anyway. It’s not like the frost is on the pumpkin, or anything quite that dramatic, but the pumpkin goodies are on the store shelves and Starbucks is offering up its pumpkin latte, which tells you there’s a hint of Autumn in the air. The porch pots, brimming with jewel-colored chrysanthemums, were on display at Meijer when I was there earlier in the week. To me, when mums kick the flowering annuals to the curb, it always signifies that Autumn is near.
College football starts today, thus the annual rivalry between Michigan’s foremost teams begins anew. While strolling through the ‘hood, I passed ornamental cement geese wearing hoodies emblazoned with “U of M” or “MSU” and collegiate garden flags were flapping in the breeze.
Thursday morning it was almost twenty degrees cooler and much less humid than twenty-four hours before. It was actually chilly and very overcast. I almost declared it officially “sweater weather” but this delightful respite once again will not stick around long – heat and humidity return Saturday morning as Summer rages on.
As I walked to Council Point Park these last two days, I couldn’t help noticing the many leaves littering the lawns and sidewalks, all courtesy of that nearly month-long drought we had in July. The tall oaks are spilling acorns onto the sidewalks and the squirrels are industrious, scrambling to get them and stuffing their cheeks until they look like they have the mumps. It is also amusing to see them clutching onto pinecones and nibbling delicately at those wood-like “petals” … perhaps the chillier air has put them into hunting-and-gathering mode, as they scurry to and fro across my path, foraging for food while the goin’ is good. Those squirrels remember all too well our wicked Winter of 2017-2018, when Mother Nature cranked up the snow machine on December 9th and she was having so much fun, she forgot to press the “stop” button until April!
I checked out the horse chestnut tree, but it looks the same with its pendulous, fruit-like chestnuts on nearly every branch. I am eager to see what they look like when they ripen.
When I returned to Council Point Park yesterday, after an absence of only three days, my favorite squirrel, Parker, came racing over to see me. Yup, I wanted to scoop him up and say I was sorry I’d not been by due to the heat. He pranced and danced around my feet, then stood on his haunches, eagerly awaiting his treat, so I lavished peanuts on him. He grabbed two in his front teeth and headed across the parking lot to the spot he always goes to hide them. All I saw next was a furry tail sticking straight up in the air.
I stepped onto the walking trail, then chatted with a few other walkers about the weather, always a common topic, then doled out peanuts along the way to my other furry pals. On the second loop, I put away the camera as not much happens on that side. But, I was premature in tucking it away. There was a black squirrel on the path ahead of me, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. As I’ve mentioned countless times, the black squirrels in the neighborhood, and at the Park, are notorious for either rebuffing your efforts to give them peanuts, or, they bolt as soon as they see the whites of your eyes.
However, as I neared this cute little creature, he came over to see me on his own accord.
No coaxing, or cajoling, nor tossing out peanuts.
I wanted to feel his forehead.
Timid at first, he hung out around the tips of my shoes, like we were best buds or longstanding pals, like Parker and me. So, where was that skittish personality I’ve encountered with all the black squirrels in the past? It sure wasn’t evident.
I bent down and tossed out a few peanuts onto the path.
The Park was full of walkers yesterday and today, all of us enjoying the cool and refreshing air after the relentless heat and humidity we’ve endured all Summer. They saw me stopped on the trail and moseyed over to see what I was doing.
Well, what I was doing was sweet talkin’ this little guy and bending down closer to his level to give him more peanuts. After an initial reluctance, where once he dashed into the bushes, he soon ventured out again and stayed put to enjoy his treat. Slowly, I retrieved the camera so I wouldn’t spook him and could get his picture. More walkers marveled at this little black squirrel sitting there so contentedly, especially Mike who feeds the squirrels and he said “I’ve never seen one of those black squirrels take peanuts, or even come up close to any of us.”
I stayed there with him, clicking off a lot of shots, but it was quite gray yesterday and the trees and bushes shaded the pathway. In fact, I had a few shots of him where he looked slightly demonic with bright-red eyes. I wonder if he is older, judging from those pesky white hairs intermingled with the jet-black fur in his tail.
I stayed near him while the others moved on, but more walkers passed by, and also marveled at this little guy, posing so nicely and enjoying the companionship of his benefactor. So, will this little guy be competition for Parker? I finally left when he scurried off to bury some nuts – maybe he thought I wasn’t passing this way again?
This morning I doubled up on my peanut offerings before leaving the house. Parker never disappoints and was quick to come bounding over as soon as I walked into the parking lot, but Midnight, the moniker I gave to my newest little buddy, was a no show today. There will be many more morning walks at the Park, and hopefully more photo ops of him.
Today I passed the 700-miles-walked goal I set for myself for August 31st. It was touch and go for a while with all this rain, but I still have another 350 miles to go for my year-end goal. I will have to really push myself in September and early October … sun up is noticeably later every day and after mid-October there is the threat of black ice on those frosty mornings. It really slickens up on the asphalt path, so sometimes I just stay in the neighborhood to maximize my miles as the sidewalk is more porous and not slick.
Tomorrow, as I push toward this goal, I’ll christen my new walking shoes …
… since my current ones were starting to crack just a little. I’m sure they have at least 1,000 miles or more on them and I’ll keep them for a spare pair.
I took the new shoes out of the box this morning to take the picture. They sure looked heavy and clunky looking, and seeing them made me recall getting new back-to-school shoes every year. After a Summer of running around in flip flops or sneakers, my mom would say “you’d better wear your new school shoes around the house and get used to them, or you’ll get blisters when you walk to school!” So, I’d tromp around the house in my Mary Janes, and, when I got older, my penny loafers. It didn’t seem to help – I’d always get blisters on my heels anyway.
I’ll venture out tomorrow in these new shoes, onward and upward … no barefoot in the Park for this gal.

You know I’ve had these shoes a month and every morning I go running out the door and think “I must wear these new shoes” but you have to straighten the laces and they looked so uncomfortable. That’s lazy! We have a lot of black squirrels around the neighborhood and Park Janis but they are just so unfriendly. They are skittish and never come anywhere near you, so I’ve only been able to get pictures of them up in a tree. This guy was extremely friendly – still trying to figure it out. 🙂

When I mentioned to my husband this morning that it was chilly outside he replied that it was “invigorating – you can always put more clothes on” he said. LOL.
I was actually a little confused by the big candy display in the grocery store today it just seems way to early for Halloween candy.

Ha ha – I felt it more yesterday Ruth because today in my neck of the woods it was a little more humid. Yesterday was such a stark contrast to Wednesday and there was no sun. But the heat and humidity is back again tomorrow for the holiday weekend. The stores start way too early for Halloween these days. At Meijer they want to clear away the school supplies and make room for Halloween before school even starts. Soon Christmas will be on our doorstep.

Midnight was a real cutie Anne. I don’t know what possessed him to be so friendly – it amazed me and all the others who gathered around like it was a celebrity among us!
I think 365 miles is admirable – you have your certain route you go daily and I think you said it was two miles, right? And you were having bad weather up to April, just like we were, as we were comparing notes. Some black ice as well. Not to mention you’ve had a lot of company, a vacation away … so you had days you didn’t walk and still got that many miles under your belt. I’ll bet you and John make 500 miles before year end.
I’m glad I got out this morning as they mentioned a brief rain … possibly. I came home from a couple of walking events at Lake Erie Metropark and had taken many pictures. I was uploading them, and it started to rumble … we had quite the storm and they had had storming in the northern burbs but said it would touch us here. I shut down and have come back to finish uploading the pictures. Wrote part of my post, but not going to post tonight as I’d be up late picking pictures, etc. – will have to be tomorrow. We are having another storm overnight. I guess an ugly weekend is becoming the norm – we have storms all three days of the holiday weekend.

Thanks for giving us some excuses for not walking. I walked alone today, because John had already started the four-hour drive to TN to the train park. You have really had the storms this year, haven’t you? Weather seemed to go in seven-day cycles on Long Island. John was always concerned about rain at the train park there. If it rained on Sunday, it was likely to rain on Sundays for weeks. I’ll look forward to your post tomorrow. Picking pictures can take a lot of time!

You’re welcome Anne – anytime. 🙂 I did look through the pics on Shutterfly – I took a ton of pictures and I knew some were duplicates and some would not look the same as they did there and it got so hot toward the end of the second nature walk, I put the camera away and it stayed put. We went to the lotus beds and it is a good 3-4 weeks since I saw them and these were up close and we had a wooden bridge overlooking them, so had a bird’s eye view. Apparently they did not peak yet (usually by late August) and many of them still had buds not blossomed yet. As for the weather, now I am concerned because the second batch of storms are maybe severe. First of all, they said three days with rain in the afternoon … all three days of the long holiday, but no storms, just be prepared to duck under cover. This morning they said no rain at all today. I was uploading the pictures … I hear rumbling and torrential rain, not five minutes after I heard the weather forecast that only the northern suburbs would get rain. Bad storm … lightning. Now I just read this at the National Weather Service … it is NOT staying in the West, but moving SE … SE is me and this has been a terrible weather year … not one nice thing since January. I hpe they are wrong and I’ve not gone to the grocery store in a week, putting off buying refrigerated food since they have called for possible stormy weather off and on … I don’t want to lose food again. Here is their prediction as of 30 minutes ago and should hit at 10:00 … I will go to bed maybe and not dwell on it. I can only get the radio on the computer as they are playing football (U of M in Indiana) … we had a bad storm on the first game of the year, which was on the Saturday of Labor Day, about 8 years ago. I didn’t want to turn on the computer and risk a lightning strike and they were playing football, just like tonight from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. They pre-empt regular programming to put the football game on. Forecast is:
Storms are developing over W MI will move east into SE MI over the next few hours. Marginal risk for severe weather, with frequent lightning and brief torrential rain the main threats. Low chance for damaging wind gusts, hail, and a weak tornado or two in the strongest storms.

Isn’t that crazy? The severe weather warning went down for SE Michigan but there was a wind advisory. We got torrential rain around 10:00 p.m., second time that day and then rain again this morning around 5:00 a.m. Altogether 2 inches of rain here in Lincoln Park. Got to 90 degrees today.

We had a thunderstorm slide by just now. We must have seen six or eight lightning strikes on the mountain from my deck. That’s the most we’ve ever seen that close. Exciting!

That’s amazing … you should have taken pictures of it since you were safe inside your home. We’re having rain tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and a heavy, gusty storm on Wednesday afternoon. Then some relief from the heat. I’d like to just fast forward to Thursday.

I did two nature walk events at Lake Erie Metropark … it was nice, but the second one – just sweltering and was glad when we went under the trades and through the shady areas.

Thanks Andy – I don’t know why this little black squirrel was so friendly – very uncharacteristic, but you can see how he lays a little low to the ground, he looks like he is prepared to escape should I make one quick move to startle him. The cooler weather will be welcome by you I’m sure as you had a hot Summer too. It was just wicked heat today and we had a storm a short while ago – cooled it down 12 degrees in a matter of moments.

You’re probably right Wayne, but they are promising us an El Nino Winter this year … I am keeping my fingers crossed that it happens, after last year’s cold and snowy Winter which lingered into Spring. We still were having light snow or freezing rain the first week of April. Our weather is nothing to write home about. Today was another zinger with the high heat index, lots of humidity, then a torrential rain and thunderstorm this afternoon.

It is nice for two days then back to this again …. I shut down my computer last night and we had another torrential rainstorm around 10:00 p.m. Had rain again at 5:00 a.m. today. Altogether two inches of rain for Lincoln Park in about 12 hours. It was murky out today and very gray so I just walked in the neighborhood – 95% humidity and 70 degrees. I hauled my raincoat and umbrella along and stayed close to home as it looked like it would pour any second.

A wolf pack came in early yesterday morning & killed a local dog.The owner let it out around 5am.It went out to the beach where the wolves were.

Yes, we needed that rain because we went most of July with intense heat and no rain and caused some drought-like conditions. I don’t water my grass anymore – I used to years ago – no more. But all the rain has not brought it back – it is no longer crispy, but it sure is brown. And there are a lot of leaves down. At the Park yesterday, there are many trees, like a forest. Leaves were everywhere, and red and yellow leaves, not just the occasional one – lots of them. The colors will peak a week or two earlier this Fall due to the drought.
That’s sad about the dog. We have coyotes and they are mostly in the northern suburbs because those folks have larger homes in more rural areas. People have lost many small dogs this year from coyotes and people are told to go out in the yard with their pets and stay with them. We had a coyote about 1 1/2 miles from here – I saw some pictures people took of it at the railroad tracks and it was skinny as a rake and in need of a good meal.

Thanks Tom – he really liked posing and was uncharacteristically friendly. I know I’ve written many times about how unfriendly they are – just last week with the black squirrel in the tree that you were laughing at its sour-looking face. I should have used that picture of Midnight at the start position in association with my setting out to rack up more miles toward my eventual goal. We had a bad storm and torrential rain this afternoon – happy I didn’t get caught in it (especially with the new shoes), but I was going to try to post something today but we’re having another storm this evening, so I’ll do it tomorrow. I went on two nature walks this a.m. and saw some Viceroy butterflies. They really look like Monarchs – amazing. One was missing half of its bottom wings. Our guide was just in the Bruce Peninsula in Georgian Bay, Canada and said there were many Monarch butterflies and he said they should be making their way to Michigan, enroute to Mexico, shortly. He said they were everywhere and a sight to see, but someone there told him that as good as it looked to see all those Monarchs, it is a long time before the Monarch population will be normal again.

Great squirrel pics. We don’t have black ones here. Our squirrels (in our yard) are very well fed as they clean up under the bird feeders. I will get corn cobs in the fall so they can have some winter treats too.

Thanks Kate – he was very cute and so uncharacteristically friendly for black squirrels – they are timid and skittish. Today, I went on two nature walks at Lake Erie Metropark. I had my mesh bag of peanuts still attached to my fanny pack and mentioned it to the guide and he asked if I fed the squirrels in a Park, told him yes. He said to stop as they get dependent on it … I said that I know that and feel badly when I can’t go there but there are other people feeding them as well. He said they will get frantic if you or others aren’t there to feed them and might attack another person in a frenzy, thinking it is you and where are its treats? I told him he had a point, but I don’t want to stop feeding them. They know how to forage for food in the Park and are hiding some of these nuts for the Winter. They don’t clear our walking paths where I walk every day – you depend on the sun to melt the ice/snow off the path and I won’t go unless it is gone, even in heavy, lug-soled boots, and the other walkers won’t go either, so they are on their own. The reason he told me this is because there are many deer in this park and I saw one driving through early this morning. He said people are not to feed the wildlife and people bring corn for the deer … so if the police see them doing so, they will be fined. They are afraid that the deer will approach every vehicle or every person feeding them looking for handouts.. I guess people bring corn and dump it out by the bucketful on the road.

He was very playful Rebecca … so unusual for black squirrels. Everyone was talking about him and the next day he never showed up. I wonder now if he is from a neighborhood and wandered to the Park, and maybe in that neighborhood, a family feeds him so he was not scared? We had very hot weather today. I left early this morning and it was 95% humidity and 70 degrees. We had a bad thunderstorm and torrential rain this afternoon and another one is on the way this evening – it cooled us down 12 degrees they said. We have this sweltering weather at least another 5 days.

I hope you are able to see him again sometime. There is a town near us that is said to have white squirrels. I have never seen one of those either. Summer is my least favorite season. I’m so looking forward to autumn!

I hope so too Rebecca. I don’t like Winter but just for the snow and ice. I took the bus to work in the City (Detroit) for decades but just walked to the end of the street to catch the bus. Now that I work from home I don’t have to go out in the bad weather except to shovel or run the car, but not driving at all. I just drive when it is clear. I don’t mind the cold air as I have lots of warm weather gear from my bus days. But this heat and humidity … we had two inches of rain in 12 hours and rain every day through Wednesday. It’s been an awful Summer. Fall is my favorite season.

Funnily enough I had just finished eating a pumpkin and spinach burger before reading this post and thought exactly the same thing that it was a sign of autumn 😁.
So glad Parker came to see you and also some of the other squirrels. I think the universe is trying to show you that you would best squirrel whisperer around. 🙂

Pumpkin and spinach sounds interessting Zena and certainly Fall-like as well. I noticed even more leaves this morning walking in a different park and it was a much more dense, almost woodsy feel. Even the smell of musty leaves was around – usually you don’t get that smell until late September/early October.
Thanks for saying that – I think animals do sense kindness and gravitate toward that and they are a bunch of friendly squirrels, in fact, I am happy to say that the baby squirrels finally seem to be coming around as well. I hope I can get another 1,000 miles of steps and smiles out of them. 🙂

I get what you mean about the smell of leaves being premature this year. It is funny as although we have had a really hot summer, the temps have dropped over the last 2 weeks and the air smells like it does late Sept/Oct. Sounds strange but because of my sight loss, other senses are heightened and the change in the seasons smell different. Me and my brother who only has partial sight, have the most bizarre conversations about things we sense that makes no sense to others. We love it.
Keep communicating with the squirrels, you are doing an awesome job 🙂

The harvest vegetables are so versatile and I am not really a cook, but my neighbor used to bake her spaghetti squash and it was very delicious. I do like pumpkin too. Yes, I was walking on two nature walks yesterday – I finished a very long post not too long ago. It is more like a forest and the leaves were everywhere – red and yellow, even orange, just amazed me and that musty smell. I believe you would have a heightened senses to compensate for your lack of sight. I am glad you are enjoying the squirrel stories. They do make me smile with their antics … not to mention their loyalty.

I hope to see him again Heather and if I do see him, I’m going to call him Midnight since he is jet black, but he does have a few white hairs that I saw. Parker I can tell and Stubby … he is missing half of his tail, the other ones, I am not sure I can name as they don’t have the same characteristics … they are friendly, but I can’t tell them apart. I think they know me though. 🙂

It was Fallish here week before last, and then, we were in western Ukraine last week where the temps were Fallish as well. Now, I am back in Georgia where the temps are expected to be in the high 80s, and the humidity even above those numbers. 😜 Ugh. Life in the South. Gotta love it! 😂 I am so looking forward to Fall! At least you got a break in the Ukraine … we’ve got weather like the South and this is not the normal weather for us for September at all here in SE Michigan. It’s been abnormal weather everywhere. Fellow bloggers, Facebook friends who are scattered around the U.S. all saying it is hot, miserable and lots of rain. I’ve had several walking events get rained out and a few non-walking events – it is exasperating. They had five tornadoes in parts of Michigan on Labor Day. It is not near me, but they all were on Monday late afternoon. Like the Christmas song “the weather outside is frightful …”

I am … thank you. We had one five miles away about a month ago; these were further away, but I will be glad when tornado season is over. We’ve had a very volatile weather pattern this Summer – I hope this is not the norm going forward. I’d like the nice moderate Summer weather I remember growing up with.

Here too Ellie and mercifully, a cold front comes in tonight and knocks back the heat and humidity. I will be thankful. I’ve been walking at the grocery store. I went grocery shopping yesterday, but the other times, I’ve just walked there – otherwise I feel like I’m ready to melt into a puddle by the time I get home. Fall – hurry up!

We have gotten very hot weather since I wrote that and it turned hot the very next day … we’ve had humidity almost to 100 and weather to around 37C … unfortunately I’ve been walking at the store as it has been oppressive … tomorrow relief is in sight, if it doesn’t rain. He is beautiful isn’t he and I think it is may be older because of the white hair.

Yes, he could be older because he is so friendly and could use any bit of nutrition he can get and can’t afford to be skittish.:)
I got back Tuesday but have not been well – caught a stomach bug and am still nursing it. And I lost my phone with two sim cards. So I am a little sad and lost. I hope to feel better next week.
Hope you have more squirrel stories for us. When one is laid up, these blog stories make me smile.

Oh Susie – I am sorry for you – there was an article on the news this morning about 100 people getting off a plane in New York with flu-like symptoms. Some people reported passengers looking ill when boarding the flight. That’s a misery losing the phone and two sim cards … can your phone provider ping for the phone to find its location and maybe it was lost on the plane? My boss lost a wallet on a plane once – it slid out of his pocket. In the meantime he canelled all his credit cards, etc. and the next day Delta called and said they found his wallet and would return it to him via Fed Ex. Nothing was missing from his wallet at all. I’ll keep my fingers crossed you feel better soon and you find the phone and cards. Unless it rains tomorrow morning, I’ll head to the Park (finally) … walking in the store for the cool air isn’t fun!

I got 6 1/2 miles in today and I came home starving! It was cold but beautiful. I did make my mileage goal in 2018 and was actually 111 miles over, however, I didn’t think I’d make it as we had a horrible November, so was pretty happy – my goal for 2019 is 2,000 kilometers – I never do my goal in kilometers but someone suggested it – in the U.S. we are the only ones not using the metric system – this will be 80 more miles than last year … hope I did not bite off more than I can chew!

I didn’t know that – wow. I thought you might be from the UK – I was there in May 1979 for a week. Stayed in Surbiton in Surrey and took little day trips. Enjoyed it very much. I thought we were the only ones using non-metric measurements, so I learned something today.

I’ve just googled it. The UK and everywhere use metric measures, except for miles/kilometres. Although Europe use KM, here we use miles.
I actually read in an odds and ends piece that when France changed to metric after the revolution the US wanted to, too, but they didn’t because it would have entailed a pricey trip to France to measure the exact units (or something like that. I should google it too).
