We sling around a lot of lingo on social media … memes, mash-ups, gifs and even emoticons. It wasn’t all that long ago that we got pretty excited when tapping the keys for a colon and right parentheses would yield a smiley face and a left parentheses made a frowny face. Woo hoo! Soon we were sending e-mails with smiley and frowny faces and feeling very high tech. The epitome of computer cool was when Windows 98 users played Elf Bowling
Stop that Linda … you’re really dating yourself!
If you are current with your cool computer lingo, you know that the “Merriam-Webster Dictionary” defines a mash-up as something created by combining elements from two or more sources – maybe movies, music – even still photos.
Since it is Halloween, I thought I’d do a mash-up of an evil-looking squirrel and some shady-looking characters i.e. a few fine-feathered friends that you will recognize as ducks and a crow. Plus, I’ve included a collection of photos from a ghoulish and ghastly graveyard. Some of these photos are just bad to the bone. Now I’ll admit this is not my usual shtick, so we’ll trend back to nature in November, okay?

About ten days ago I wandered along Emmons Boulevard to check out all the great holiday décor. The homeowners on this street have a plethora of pumpkins and creepy creatures and I always ensure I take at least one trip here to gather some pics for my Halloween blog post.
I didn’t walk this morning because it was raining, no – correction, it was pouring, so I stayed inside. There is no walk for tonight either because it is Halloween. Tomorrow we turn the calendar page to November and now there are only two months left to accomplish my goal of 1,051 miles walked in 2018. I have tallied up all my steps to date for this post.
Do you think my total was a trick or a treat?
It’s a treat – I’ve walked 961 miles and have 90 more miles to go to reach my goal.
And now I’m off to work, so Happy Halloween everyone and …

I am too – I know you did not like the creepy pictures from a week ago Sunday and I only do it once a year, and during November I’ll have some more harvest decor, though it has been scarce, and what harvest decor is up, it has been pelted by these incessant rains we have had. We had a lot of rain this morning and it quit mid-afternoon and two more days of rain on the day. Very disheartening weather for my favorite season. I stayed late tonight to finish work as my boss will be going on vacation so arrived here later than usual. Take your walking shoes to Chicago – maybe you can get 8 miles a day like you did in Philly? Thank you for the well wishes for All Saint’s Day. I haven’t thought of that holiday in many years … my grandmother always went to a special service at her church every November 1st.

Ooh! Those pictures are scary! I have a confession – I did not know what a mash-up was until I read this blog. That’s probably because I am old enough to remember when they played the “Monster Mash” on the radio on regular (not oldies) stations! 🙂

I’m glad you liked the pictures Laurie. Well, I’ll confess too that I kept hearing the word mash-up all the time and thought “what the heck is that?” Like meme – same thing. I may have been looking at memes but never heard them called “memes” so I took to Google. Since I had a little bit of nature, and a whole lot of creepy pictures, I decided to do a play on words. I also remember “Monster Mash” on the airwaves not on our oldies station. And, if you listen to that YouTube video I embedded in the post, it was an actual record in the video. You remember how the needle on the arm of a record player would settle down gently onto the record and you’d hear a faint crackling sound as the needle started into the grooves before the music started – it does that on this Youtube video. That is such a great song!

You could actually hear that sound in the beginning of “The Monster Mash” Laurie, and boy did that take me back a few years. On Sundays my parents always had albums on the stereo and mostly the old country western singers … Hank Williams, Sr. or Hank Snow and Patsy Cline to name a few. They’d stack the vinyl records up and I heard them so much I’d know how long from the end of the last song on one LP until the next one started … the arm dropping down and the needle with the static noise. I used to have 45s back in the day as well.

I used to have 45s too. Lots of Beatles. My parents listened to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Mitch Miller, and Burt Bacharach.

Yes, Neil Diamond too. And Bobby Sherman from way back! How did I forget about Mitch Miller? A fellow blogger wrote about the harvest moon last month and I made a remark about Mitch Miller crooning “Shine on Harvest Moon” – I think I knew every song on that “Sing Along With Mitch” album – it was played every Sunday afternoon at our house.

Happy Halloween. I love how much it is celebrated in America and I love how lots of people get in the spirit by decorating their houses. We had 52 little Trick or Treaters tonight that my granddaughter gave party bags to and it was so lovely to see kids enjoying themselves.

Thanks Zena and did you know that Halloween is now the second most-popular holiday here in the U.S.? I just heard on the news earlier today that people spend nine billion dollars annually on Halloween. And so you don’t have to figure out that in British pounds I used the currency converter and (9,000,000,000 USD is equal to 7,067,137,809 GBP) … just amazing and if you lived here, you’d have to have an outfit for Munch for when he was off-duty. People spend a small fortune on animal costumes and they come in all sizes. We don’t get many Trick or Treaters in this neighborhood anymore … they hit the streets with the big houses, like Emmons Boulevard where I got the spooky decorations for this post … the “pickings” are better there. 🙂

Wow that is an incredible amount of money to spend on Halloween. I knew it was big in U.S. but not that big 🤥. I think a Chewbacca costume would look great on Munch! Children always know where to go for the treats. We decorated our house inside and out with some inflatables etc so the kids know they can come here for trick or treating. Some of my neighbours had none as they don’t decorate. A lot of the schools around here tell the kids not to knock on doors of the elderly etc and because everyone knows each other around here, fair play they avoid the ones who could be scared of answering the door.

They really do go all out here. Munch would make a cute Chewbacca! I think I only went one year, maybe two when we moved here to the States and in Canada, we went as a group, all the kids in the neighborhood walked together. I remember my father taking me when I was really young and I was Little Red Riding Hood. It rained and the dye from my cape soaked through to my Winter coat – it was a very cold evening and started to rain while we were out there. I dragged my bag of candy on the ground and ripped a hole in the bag. I never got to each much of it anyway as my parents wouldn’t let me eat candy, but still … I lost my load.

Yay… creepy! I’ve been enjoying the decorations around my neighborhood too. Some people are so creative! Congrats on your mileage total! I have no doubt that you will make your goal… and more!

Glad it was creepy enough for you Janis. 🙂 I should have made a slideshow as I had a few more from others in the neighborhood as I thought people might get tired of scrolling down. This was all one house, a double-lot and a corner and they have the inflatables as well. I went back the next day (that’s right where I saw the coyote) and took pics of the inflatables but I kind of liked the graveyard ghouls all on their own. Thank you – I now think the goal is doable, though we had pouring rain today and for the next two days as well. When you return on January 1st, I’ll tell you how I did. Have an enjoyable respite and best wishes for the holiday season.

Thanks Diane … I sure am hopeful I can do it … right now we have a rainy morning and it is going to pour all day long. I think two months can get the goal accomplished, especially since they are predicting a milder Winter … fingers crossed anyway. I like Halloween too. I had some other pictures but not so creepy and decided to do all creepy this year.

What scares me the most are not cartoonish looking ghouls but the people in this world who will hurt someone else with hateful poisonous words or bullets.

Oh, I am so in agreement with you Wayne. The ghoulish stuff is gone the day after Halloween, but the poisonous words and bullets unfortunately are here to stay. Sadly, it is getting more difficult every day to stay positive with the world the way it is now. Perhaps that is why I enjoy my walks in the Park so much – it is a temporary escape from all the madness.

Yes it is a balm to soothe what it going on in the world right now Wayne. Unfortunately I read that there are now three coyotes that are lurking in my favorite nature nook. One is a pup. To make things worse, according to the crime site, one of the coyotes was shot by a policeman or animal control officer – not with a tranquilizer gun, but a regular gun. It was wounded and ran away. Then there was a coyote spotted down the block from me yesterday – people had concerns due to Halloween. I hope my nature experience is not “taking a hit” as well.

that Policemen just made things much worse.A wounded animal is very dangerous! Because it can’t feed for its self any longer,it’ll grow hungrier & hungrier making it do things it other wise wouldn’t! If there is a pup that means a small family has moved into the neighbourhood.

I know he did – they probably should have tried to capture it/them, or maybe had an expert in to do this, or, if they were going to kill it, then clear the Park out and get a sharpshooter like they do in Ann Arbor when they want to cull the deer herds. I read all this in this crime site and felt sicker the more I read it. People said it was limping with one front leg injured. Someone had taken a picture of Council Point Park in the dark, I believe 2:00 a.m. the morning before showing a coyote in the Park and it was probably lit up by streetlights or lights at the Park. I never walk in the dark so I don’t know how well it is lit up but they do have curfew when it closes at night. I was surprised to hear there was a second coyote, let along a pup. Can’t they trap them for goodness sake? It is not all that rural at the Park – you saw the Google map in my post last week. It is not dense, the brush it likely only 10-15 feet between the Ecorse Creek and the walking path, if that much and what about when the leaves all fall off – where will the coyotes hide then?

Maybe I was too confident the other day Joan – another rainy morning today … this weekend is dry but I do have some errands to do, grocery shopping and this blowy weather has made leaves all over the place so that’s going to take a few hours’ time as well. I’m going to have to make the most of weekends the rest of the year – I try to get 6 miles in each day, then there is Thanksgiving (probably will rain or snow) and the time change will give me at least another mile each day. After three solid mornings of rain, of course I had to doubt myself putting it out there that I could make it. 🙂

Yes, we thought we were way cool didn’t we? We were a little low tech back then compared to now. Yes, that is a nice street, all huge and stately houses. This homeowner always goes way out for Halloween. I hope to make my goal – I did 6 1/2 miles today … we had no rain and sunny most of the time for a welcome change.
