Well, maybe I am the squirrelly one because I found my fingers typing THAT headline instead of “eat, drink and be merry” … hmm, feet and fingers, please don’t fail me now! Perhaps my fingers are still frozen from this morning’s walk in the single-digit temps?
So, who will be at your holiday table today? I know everyone has a oddball character or two showing up for these big holiday dinners. You gather the family and friends and wonder if you should make place cards, or let them pick their own seats, then hope for the best. You cross your fingers that the conversation is pleasant and doesn’t stray to politics or other taboo topics, because that would be worse than worrying about runny gravy or lumpy mashed potatoes.
But, try as you may, it is hard to anticipate what will transpire at Thanksgiving dinner. There are always going to be a few quirky characters at every gathering – ornery, argumentative, piggy, or a perpetually late arrival. Still others seem to forget their manners and don’t pass the stuffing, hog the dish with the green bean casserole, or insist they want to take the wishbone home with them.
What can you say about these folks?
Well, you just gotta love ‘em, right?

Glad to read that you were able to brave the elements and go out for your walk. It was cold here, too, but not single digits! 20s and windy for my run this morning. My youngest son is cooking Thanksgiving dinner, so I just have to show up with the pies. Taking it easy for a little bit now before we head into the whirlwind! My son’s in-laws will be there, along with some of my DIL’s extended family. It’s a good crowd. We always have fun! You gave your squirrels a happy Thanksgiving, too!

Hi Laurie – it was bitter cold out, but I bundled up and at least it was dry, but windy here too. No sun to be found though … I bet I could count the number of times the sun has appeared this Fall on one hand. Your next five weeks will go fast between the holidays and then your hubby’s retirement (likely a party there as well) … and then you can make plans for getaways and some R&R. It sounds like a fun time today – you get to have large portions and two pieces of pie since you got your run in. I did treat my squirrels this morning – took them some walnuts for Thanksgiving. Unbelievably, by the time I was done walking and ready to go home, they had finished all the walnuts (I brought two bags as they had been on sale) and were dancing around looking for either more walnuts or peanuts. I had to make an escape because they have a problem understanding me when I say “I have nothing else sweeties” and even if I turn my bag(s) inside out … they still persist. 🙂

Haha! That’s so funny! You tell the squirrels that you’re sorry you don’t have anything else for them! You are their Santa Claus!!! It was really cold yesterday here too, but hubby and I bundled up, went outside and ran. I was actually overdressed. I wound up taking my gloves off, but I had to put them back on when we ran into the wind.

Yes, I had to apologize and hoped that any squirrels looking for more goodies got the memo that I’d already been around the loop once and distributed all the walnuts. They persist if they’ve missed out and will run in circles trying to get your attention. I was taking a lot of pictures yesterday so I had on the flip-top gloves and my exposed index fingers and thumbs were freezing. The weatherman said yesterday was like a day in January. It was warmer today.

Hi Susie – it was Parker in the pictures on the picnic table … I took those pictures the day that I broke up the suet (one day after I left it and unfortunately they couldn’t get to eat it as it was too solid and needed to be crumbled up a bit). He was watching me break it up with a stick and when I came back after walking one loop, apparently he was the only one who “discovered” the suet was now edible as he was all over it. The other pictures of the squirrels were pics I took around the Park. That one squirrel scratching his fleas with his hind leg just reminded me of someone trying to loosen their pants to eat more food on Thanksgiving … here in the U.S., people talk about Thanksgiving as a feast … not only to gather people around the table to eat, but the table groans with lots of food and most people eat too much … it is a day of gluttoness. Some of the pics I took I knew would work well with captions about eating a lot!! I am glad I gave you your laugh for the day. It was fun putting it together.

This is very true … they do focus on family but food is a big part of today … food and the football games. The people who have lost their homes in California due to the wildfires – they have assembled many of those people in these makeshift tents and shelters and today the firemen who have battled the blazes since November 8th will serve these people a holiday dinner … they say they want to give even more to these folks since they could not save their homes and possessions. It is very sad to read about these people.

Thanks Kate – you too! Yes I did feed them already because they have an earlier bedtime than us and I didn’t want them going to bed on a full stomach. 🙂 We have very cold weather here … the temp for our Detroit Thanksgiving Parade was the same as New York’s Macy’s Parade and just as blustery … but it didn’t snow thank goodness.

Same here … they are saying we have January weather and tomorrow it gets better and rain most of Saturday. That’s crazy because it will be 25 degrees warmer they say, then snow Sunday night into Monday … not measurable but more than we’ve had. At least it allowed people to travel over the holiday weekend. Just another disappointing season in 2018.

What lovely pictures of the cute squirrels!😊 Here it beginning to be cold, close to 32°F today. Tomorrow and a few day in a row we will have below 32°F Brr… cold to ride my bike to work, even if it only take 5-7 minutes.😊 On Saturday at lunchtime a friend is visit me and we are going out to shoot. The first time in months.😊 Still I don’t know where I want to go, depends of the weather also.

Thanks John – I fed those squirrels the suet and they enjoyed it, especially Parker who is featured in the pictures on the picnic table.
Here in the U.S., Thanksgiving means not just gathering with friends and family but stuffing yourself on the holiday dinner, so that is why those pictures could be captioned to look like they were humans. 🙂
I spent a few hours at the Park this morning and it was very cold – 23 degrees F and blustery. My fingers were freezing even with just the fingertips exposed in those gloves. I have just finished uploading pictures and hope the pictures are worth the freezing fingers! This is unusually cold for us – we are 20 degrees colder than usual and they say it is like January weather. Tomorrow we will be in the 40s – the weather is crazy. I hope your weather cooperates for you on Saturday for your shoot and you can enjoy the outdoors.

The weather forecast said it would be below 32° F today, but when I got up at 5 o’clock this morning it was 38° F. You can never relay on the Swedish weather forecast!😁😁😁

You can’t rely on ours much these days either … a few weeks ago they predicted wintry precip and icy roads on a Saturday morning. I had an appointment and cancelled it – woke up to find clear roads … all three weathermen I listened to said the same thing. It is frustrating!

Thanks AJ – I did walk my six miles and it was freezing cold – only 23 degrees by the time I got home and very blustery. At least it was dry (for a change).

We’re not going anywhere this Thanksgiving since Marla’s shoulder is causing a lot of pain. She is having a biopsy next week. Yeah! No stupid relatives to contend with! Scarlet and Tweetie get extra treats and will be watching X-mas movies! 🙂

Tom – I know you won’t miss the relatives from reading your prior posts. And we still have firearms deer-hunting season til the end of November and I know some of your relatives hunt. Sorry to hear about Marla’s shoulder pain – this has been a bad year for her as she just recently had the surgery. Glad to hear Scarlet and Tweetie got extra Thanksgiving treats and are watching Christmas movies – they are spoiled! I have Rudolph and Frosty on videocassettes … my mom ordered them from Blockbuster years ago since I always made sure to watch them every year. I am just a kid at heart I guess. I don’t really remember the Charlie Brown specials as I was older by then.

Glad you liked these Heather – I knew they’d give you a smile and the stretching one is funny because I never noticed when I took the picture, but this squirrel’s front feet aren’t touching the tree and he (she) is hanging on by his back feet/claws. Pretty fancy footwork, huh? Happy you fixed the internet issue and you are back again! I can’t get into my Comcast e-mail today … I was in once this morning and it’s been messed up every since. I have alot of trouble with the e-mail and have set up a G-mail account a few weeks ago and may have to use that instead.

I knew you would like that saying – I did too and it is very true, isn’t it? I am glad that you invited Beverly to your turkey dinner … I thought about how difficult this Thanksgiving would be for Beverly … losing her mom and major surgery … tough year for Beverly and I am sure you made her feel much better and no so alone after her 2018 ordeals.

Thanksgiving was last month for us…..so it’s full steam ahead for Christmas! Which leaves me wondering, how will the squirrels be celebrating Christmas?

Here in the States it is a mad rush of shopping beginning with Thanksgiving Day … it becomes a whirlwind. Well, since you asked, I have gotten them some treats for Christmas Day, and if the weather forecast for the holiday looks dire, I will go down there and make a “drop” … 🙂 P.S. – no candy canes. That was cute! Very well done…..you should repost it this year. I am thinking of recycling some of my Xmas posts too, as I had very few readers last year. We have all the Black Fridays sales here now too, but I didn’t go as I can’t handle all the crowds and craziness! Although I did buy a big box of discount books from the bookoutlet online store, most for gifts. I don’t really do much online shopping either, as I hate the returns.

I have not been Black Friday shopping since that time in 1982 or 1983 – it is really crazy. I did order something from Amazon this year that was not the right size and just kept it as it was too much hassle to take it back. It was a featherlight fisherman’s vest and I wanted it to carry stuff around with me, rather than using a fanny pack like I usually do – the reviews said “runs small” … the reviews were wrong as it ran true to size – I could have ordered a small and medium and I ordered a medium and large. So, I’m keeping the larger vest for over heavy sweaters for Winter, but it is even large for that, but we have “porch pirates” here who will grab stuff off the porch as they follow UPS, Fed Ex or post office delivery vans, so I could have left a note since I work from home, but I was like you and didn’t want to bother and just dealt with it. Glad you liked that Christmas post Joan – I had a lot of fun creating it and I do think I’ll recycle it too.

Glad you liked it – squirrels can be gluttons too it seems! Here in the U.S., Thanksgiving is not just gathering with family, but it is all about the meal and stuffing yourself! Then people go shopping right after they finish their Thanksgiving Day dinner – maybe next year’s post will focus on the mad dash to the malls on Thanksgiving Day afternoon!

We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving at all in Norway.
But we have some other holidays at other times during the year, so I don’t mind.

In Canada where I grew up, it was more about celebrating the harvest time as it was in mid-October. Here it must mingle with shopping and football which is too bad really … it takes away from the family aspect when people who work in retail jobs must eat and run so they can be at the stores when they open at 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and stay open most of the night. Some people camp out overnight for bargains – especially electronics … laptop and big screen TV deals lure them in.
