‘Twas the day before Christmas …

It’s Christmas Eve … tonight, while Santa circles the globe, visions of sugar-plums, (and peanuts for some of us), will be dancing in our heads. I will try and get another post in later today, but wanted to share this poem from last year since most of you were not following me then. Hope it gives you a smile.

WALKIN', WRITIN', WIT & WHIMSY

Christmas scene featuring red robins, santa and his reindeer.

‘Twas the day before Christmas and out in the street

Not a neighbor was stirring, they must all be beat.

The goody bags were packed with the utmost of care

In the hope the Park critters soon would be there.

The squirrels were nestled all snug in their nests

With visions of peanuts that soon they’d  be blessed.

And I, in my many layers and a warm woolen cap

Had just arrived at the Park for a long Winter lap.

As I set out on the path, I heard some songbird chatter

Then in an instant, all the Park critters around me did gather.

Because what to my wondering eyes should appear …

But a Park filled with critters dressed in holiday cheer.

I dragged out my camera and all their goodies in a flash

Because it appeared they were having a Christmastime bash.

As my Park pals joined me…

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Back at you Sarah – I had a lot of fun on Fotor.com last year … they had stickers and all kinds of things you could do – this year, they made all stickers and doodads paid items … no more freebies – oh well. I had a lot of fun making the poem and adorning my favorite Park critters.

Glad you liked it Anne. I had a lot of fun writing it and doing the photos last year and really only had a handful of WordPress followers last Christmas, mostly subscription folks at that time. I figured I could repurpose it just this once.

Thanks – I did put a lot of work into it and there were not many who read it – I passed it along during the year to a few people … I was shameless with it. 🙂

Yes for sure – Santa needed something to wash down all those cookies! I remember as a kid watching my mom making eggnog, whipping it with the manual beaters til it got frothy … I don’t think you could buy eggnog in a carton back then or maybe we just made our own?

      • I remember the very first sip I had of store eggnog. I was about 10 years old, and my brother and I were playing with the boy down the street whose family owned a grocery store. I was sure I had just tasted heaven. My parents never bought eggnog. We had the old Southern drink, boiled custard. I should make that now and see if it tastes any better than it did 50 years ago.

Gee, I thought the store-bought eggnog was more recent as I never had it until about 20 years ago because my mom always made it. Hers was good but not thick and creamy, just thin and frothy as I recall. I told AJ to use runny custard in her oatmeal – about two weeks ago I told her I use eggnog in my oatmeal just during the holidays and she tried it and loved it … she said they don’t have the non-dairy/GF eggnog at her store except at the holidays, so I told her to make custard and not let it set … mix it with milk/milk alternative and voila … eggnog. I like custard … haven’t had it in years though. I am too lazy to make it and I tried a pudding mix and it didn’t taste like custard to me. If I made it, it would likely burn. I buy the rice pudding and tapioca as I grew up eating that a lot … we had all the fun comfort foods back in the day.

My mom grew up knowing tapioca pudding as fish eyes and glue as they had the big “beads” back then … I don’t see the big beads now, just the small ones. My mom used to make rice pudding with the raisins and cinnamon and it was good – I just buy Kozy Shack.

      • After Christmas cookies are gone, I should make tapioca and rice pudding for John. He loves them. Thanks for the reminder.

You’re welcome Anne – I always loved them and butterscotch pudding … the real kind that you make with milk. The instant doesn’t taste as good as the real pudding in my opinion. Sounds like John is in for a treat.

I’m glad you liked it Zena – the year before I only had a handful of people following me and I had put a lot of effort into the poem and pictures, so decided to re-post it. It does kind of give you a giggle imagining that happen.
