It was a cold and snowy day when my fingers flew over the keyboard to create and launch that initial labor of love. I just went back and did a word count and that first post was 2,195 words. Well, brevity has never been my strongpoint as my regular followers will attest to.
In many ways this blog has been a present I have given myself. It is a gift that keeps on giving because it is a daily affirmation that yes, other people out there in the world share the same little joys as me, and furthermore that they enjoy reading about them.
Six years – where did the time go?
I like things easy and uncomplicated these days.
As I have grown older, I’ve come to realize that it is the small delights in my life that give me the most pleasure. My world suddenly became much smaller when I got laid off, then eventually hired back, but working from home. While I enjoy my at-home gig, I was eager to get out into the world and leave the confines of the kitchen where I work at the table. But query … how does one get out and explore and still adhere to a business work schedule?
So, I began a walking regimen in 2011 to get some exercise, after I realized, except for gardening, I wasn’t walking many steps a day and my job was too sedentary.
My friend Marge encouraged me to start a blog to write about what I saw in my daily treks around the ‘hood, but the earliest posts were devoid of pictures and there was only so much you could write about pounding the concrete sidewalks and streets.
Luckily, I discovered Council Point Park in 2013, a few months after beginning my blog. I would go on to discover other parks along the way, but, I keep returning here because it always feels like home.
Small delights.
Very few people know that it was my dream to become a veterinarian because of my love for animals. But my grades weren’t good enough in math and science, so I abandoned that dream the first year of college. I liked working on the college newspaper, as well as the camaraderie of the news staff. So I switched gears and writing became my focus instead.
For me, getting out and walking in a natural environment sets the tone for the day. There is a spring in my step, a lightness in my heart … it is very real. A foray into nature for me is like stepping back in time … I was seven or eight years old, running through the meadow with my friends, dipping our jam jars into a creek to get pollywogs. These were the simple delights of childhood. So enjoying the goodness of nature brings out the kid in me. That’s a good thing because the harshness of day-to-day living is a real kick in the pants sometimes, isn’t it?
I am happy to read your comments when I write about the antics of Parker or Grady, the “aws” over pictures of baby robins taking their first flight, or a sly cardinal that swooped down and grabbed a peanut from the trail, a duck trying to wrangle a wiggling fish … and there are your oohs and aahs over beautiful sights like crashing waves at Lake Erie Metropark or icy boulders along the boardwalk at the Detroit River. I’m so happy to share these treks with you.
Small indulgences.
Everyone needs to have a few indulgences. Like Dave’s Killer Bread toasted, with a pat of real butter and slathered with chunky peanut butter is one for me. Or those instant cappuccinos – a little bit of heaven in a big mug. And my latest find, is Pepperidge Farm’s new “Farmhouse Thin & Crispy Toffee Milk Chocolate Cookies” … it is not so good I discovered these when I’m not walking every day.
But, indulgences aren’t just about food and drinks … after years of snapping off the radio when there was too much gabbing, loud and obnoxious commercials and songs I didn’t know anymore, I have discovered a new radio station. It’s a delight to be able to sing the songs I know by heart for decades, even if I can’t a carry a tune. These songs transport me to my 20s and me walking around with my headphones clapped tightly over my ears. I’d be working in the yard, or doing chores in the house, singing away at the top of my lungs – I couldn’t carry a tune then either. Finally, I can turn off the all-news station more often because the state of the world gives me no great joy … too often it’s a world full of pettiness, hate and divisiveness.
Good things come in small packages.
And then there are small treasures like Parker and Grady and their assorted pals.
This morning I walked outside, grumbling about the snow as I opened the screen door, knowing tonight’s freezing rain and wintry precip event will certainly gum up the roads and the pathway for the short-term. I turned the corner and there was Grady, up on the ledge munching away, while a male and female cardinal were noshing a peanut apiece on the porch. I kicked myself for not having the camera with me.
Yesterday at the Park, two squirrels, running from opposite sides of the trail, collided into each other, sending the smaller one bouncing against my shin. It was like a cartoon scene as if his eyes should be Xs and stars would appear around his head. My sweatpants were heavy so he had a soft cushion, but since he looked a little dazed and confused, I bent down and asked “are you alright?” Five minutes later he was bopping around and eating peanuts.
This past year has been the most fun since I began the blog. I’ve enjoyed sharing my tales from the trail – the critter encounters, especially. I’ve enjoyed interacting with each of you as we’ve laughed at the squirrels’ antics, or oohed and aahed over photos of baby robins when they took their first flight. We’ve smiled at goose drama while hissing and honking at their mate, as well as their fierce love for their young ones. Truthfully, these geese, for all their histrionics, are faithful to their mates for life, and, though their goslings may be bigger than they are, the geese parents protect their offspring against us mere mortals with a fierce love that will stop you in your tracks.
Walking and blogging are the best things I’ve ever done for myself, and, as fellow bloggers, I know you understand that passion … thank you for sharing your passion with me as well.

Wow Linda….so well written! I just loved – blogging is a present you gave yourself – and it is also a present you give to all of us readers who enjoy your daily escapades and feel like we are right there with you! Thanks for sharing your little corner of the world and all it’s creatures and nature with us. I have learned now that I am older, to delight in all the small things too. I find blogging forces you to stop and appreciate them, whereas for years the world just flew by unnoticed. Here’s to many more years of blogging……and maybe someday a children’s book!? Joan PS. Hi Joan – Thank you for all the nice comments – we have so many similarities that we have discussed in the past and now a few more. Yes, sipping the nice hot chocolate for you, the Hills Brothers cappucino for me – both little indulgences to be savored and enjoyed.
Those cookies were pretty special too, I have to tell you, especially after going back to eating sweets again. My mom used to make Health brickle bit cookies – they were awesome and they reminded me of them a little. I had several posts on robins – they were in different stages … the first ones fledged and the others were still very tiny. Here are several posts for you to see Joan:
The robins nest was on the way to the Park. I never noticed it until the robins were almost ready to leave the nest. Here they are the day before they fledged looking out of the nest, in fact standing on the nest:

These are a later group of robins, born after the other ones fledged. A Red-Winged Blackbird kept trying to steal the eggs, and I thwarted it one time, then it tried after the babies were born. I really liked this post as I had the pictures of the babies and the mom feeding them:
This was a little robin I found sitting on the sidewalk – I looked for where he might have fallen out of nest. He was the sweetest baby robin and so scared:

Thanks for the links Linda…..I enjoyed them all and the photos were all so lovely. For years morning doves would build a nest over my front porch light, but I haven’t seen them for several years……I think they mate for life…..so last summer I finally got new porch lights…..but I miss seeing the feeding and flight attempts. Although I never had as good an angle for viewing as yours as it was too high up. It seems like a long long way until spring and such lovely sights.

Hi Joan – I have some posts from back in 2017 or 2016 about some mourning doves that buiIt a nest in a planter on my neighbor’s back deck. She discovered the nest and was able to take pictures and watch them ;through her doorwall without disturbing them. She was sad when they left for good … she watched the baby getting flying lessons and knew the departure was imminent. I will look for those posts if you’d like. I don’t want to inundate you with posts, even if you are housebound due to it being Winter. 🙂

I just went to the front door and it is sealed shut due to the ice … my furry and feathered pals will likely stay put this morning anyway. I didn’t see any snow out there, just ice everywhere and while beautiful on the trees, I know how treacherous it is for driving after listening to the traffic reports – dozens of slip and falls arriving in the local E.R.s. Stay safe in your neck of the woods Ruth.

We had maybe an inch of snow before it turned to sleet. My husband had to open the window in the screen door to break ice away so he could get out and take the dogs to do their business. Seems like this kind of stuff is all too common this winter.

Well that was one way to go about it. I never thought about dropping the glass into the door, but I’d have to take the screen out. You had a valid reason to need to get outside. It is happening too much Ruth and we have more bad weather overnight.

Thank you Kate – I sometimes think I can’t sustain a regular posting schedule when we have bad Winter weather, but those spurts of nice weather and holidays help to make up for sparse times during the Winter months. Life is good, especially when I look outside on a day like today. I just went to the front door to see if I could reach out to deposit some peanuts on the porch – the door is sealed shut from the freezing rain – the trees are waving about in the wind (not good) and laden with a coating of ice. The driveway looks treacherous. The news is reporting many slip-and-falls and the E.R.s are jammed with them… I am grateful I am only going to walk to the kitchen table to my job after years of commuting by bus.

I hope it does pass you by Kate – it was bad here and we’re getting another round of the same wintry mix tonight. There were many accidents and lots of E.R. visits for slip and falls. Power lines down, and outages. I never was able to get out of my front door all day long as it was iced shut.

Happy blogbirthday, Linda. I didn’t know you were so long in blogosphere. I came here from Anne’s blog too. Anne Mehrling is a beacon which directs readers to good blogs- you are one of my most precious discoveries- I am as thrilled as probably Christopher Columbus was when he saw ” America” that I was “led” to your blog and your friendship. Which has been at least a year now, I think.
I will read the robins posts- haven’t spent much time reading those. Laughing to think of the two colliding squirrels. Surprised though not really to know you wanted to be a veterinarian but I think God knew best, for you would have cried and broken your heart with every broken wing or torn muscle or bleeding wound or animal that was too far gone to be allowed to live. You do much more of good this way, Linda believe me. The ones’ who do voluntary work without the care of money are the most blessed of all. And you are one of them.

Thank you so much for your kind words Susie … I found Anne by accident, the one and only time I was searching in WordPress in the search area using the key word “walking” and she and John had been walking near the Creek and it was snowing a little and she had posted a picture. I started following Anne, then you, Kate, Faye, Ruth, Laurie and AJ, all from Anne. I don’t believe I would have made a good vet either, not even a “vet tech” … I have too soft a heart. I was already worried that the squirrel hurt himself when he crashed into my shin. I don’t know who was more surprised, him or me. I know we both kind of looked at each other … him more dazed than me. But he bounced back thankfully. No peanuts for my “porch pals” today … all day long the ice from the freezing rain froze my screen door shut and I couldn’t open it up. A little scary to have that happen. I will enjoy one of those cookies – my mom always made thinner, crispy cookies. Some people like chewy and soft cookies, but she always made them crispier and these did taste home made. I only made cookies once and I burnt them … badly. Thank you again Susie – your words mean a lot to me.

Well Count, we’ve had two snow events that were measurable and the rest has been this ugly ice … we’ve had about six freezing rain/ice storms this season and we had such bad ice yesterday that ice had sealed the front door shut – I didn’t try the back door as I was not going out, the sidewalks were treacherous. I need to win the lottery and go somewhere where I never see Winter weather again, but sadly, even the southern states are seeing more and more wintry weather – yikes!

Thanks Diane – six years already! I do love animals, but might have been too much of a bleeding heart when I saw animals in pain. I have been at the vet with my canaries for a routine visit or nail clipping, and someone would come out of an exam room crying about bad news for their pet and I’d soon have tears in my eyes too – empathy is good, but you’d have to have a stiff upper lip if you were a vet or even a vet tech.

Thank you Shelley – it is the little things in life that count and give us joy sometimes. I’m glad for your comments about my treks and I am happy we discovered each other here in the blogosphere as well. This last year has been quite different from years past in that I’ve interacted with bloggers much more – I think I told you that the first 4 and a 1/2 years I only had a handful of e-mail subscribers, then suddenly things took off about 15 months ago.

Thank you Heather, a fellow animal lover. You’re right … fainting at the sight or mention of blood would have been a deterrent. I’d probably burst into tears … not too great either when there was business at hand. I once worked for an attorney who wanted to be a doctor. He went to undergraduate school, then began med school, and in his lifetime, he had never seen blood – never cut himself, never had blood drawn and that seems unbelievable, but true. So, he was in a room observing blood being drawn from a ‘patient” on a gurney and he fainted dead away. He was not ill that he might have caused him to faint, but was embarrassed and apologized to the professor once he was revived. They proceeded with the class – it happened again. So, no more med school, but he became an attorney who specialized in medical malpractice, so it kind of worked out for him in the long run. {{{ }}}

Thank you Sabine – I have enjoyed blogging through the years, but not as much as this last year when I have discovered other nature lovers and enjoyed reading their posts and comments … it is more fun to share my experiences that way … the first 4 1/2 years was just a handful of e-mail subscribers, and, with the exception of two friends, there were no comments. So, it is such a fun experience for me now interacting with everyone. I hope to have many more blogging anniversaries, celebrating with all my fellow nature lovers.

Thanks for saying that Sabine. I was actually surprised when fellow WordPress bloggers followed me after years of only getting 2 comments for each blog post. The other e-mail subscribers rarely, if ever, commented. I never tagged my posts either, just wrote them and published them. And to astound you even further, my blog is carried in the local newspaper on their blog roll and has been since August 2013 – I got one comment from those readers in all these years.

Good for you for persisting and making the blog roll of your local paper! Just like you, I also blog for my own enjoyment. I promised myself that I would not make the blog “work” and that it’s okay to take little breaks now and then. Life is stressful enough and my blog has to be stress free! 😉

Yes, I submitted my blog and they accepted it. I have to contact them though as I have a widget that has the current headlines on my blog landing page and they have to send a new code, as it has not worked for awhile. That used to be a criteria for appearing on Heritage Newspapers blog roll – you need to carry the current headlines. I was happy because the Heritage Newspapers have me on their blogroll for outstate and in the northern burbs. I don’t usually check clicks or stats, but one time I was on the administrator page and noticed it. I have a difficult time keeping up in Reader sometimes – it is a real problem if I do long posts on the weekend as I get too far behind. I don’t have set posting days though so I have a little wiggle room.

It’s nice of your local paper to do this! My favorite stats are the ones where you see in which countries your readers are. My favorite subject in school besides English was geography. Wiggle room is good. I have specific days for certain topics, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen or I’m a little late. We all have lives to live too, and I think most bloggers know that.

Yes, they have quite a few bloggers on their community blog roll. When I first started, I was near the bottom, but a lot of people have stopped blogging evidently as I am now fifth one on the right hand side (you have to scroll down past all the cats … the local shelter’s blog takes precedence). http://www.thenewsherald.com/blogs/#community_blogs
I think most bloggers understand it as well – when Tom Peace comes back, he can’t attempt to get caught up – it would be impossible.

Thanks Sabine – I hope they are okay too. Shoulder replacement surgery was tough, then the infection and he said the surgery would have to be redone after the infection clears up. He is dedicated to her – that is a wonderful thing to see.

Thanks for your kind comments Laurie. I think we discovered one another through Anne Mehrling? I’ve met many nice folks through Anne’s blog. I am so happy to have met you and discovered the many things we have in common by virtue of our age, and our love for nature walks, birds and a budding interest in photography. I’ve told others that the biggest joy in blogging is the same as you stated – the interaction with other bloggers because that did not happen until almost five years into this blog and has really been rewarding this past year. I had to acknowledge it in this post because blogging has become a bigger part of my life than ever before. I am glad you feel like you are alongside me. I began writing more and more detail in my walks, and supplementing them with pictures, for my neighbor who convinced me to begin this blog. She and I used to go on little outings with our cameras and as her COPD restricted her to being home 100% of the time, she would say rather wistfully to me “how I wish I could tag along with you, just once to see what you see” and so I began to try to recreate those treks as best I could for her. I am glad I went that walking route, as well as that writing route. And now I am off to make a slow trudge, walking like a penguin because that is what is recommended for treading on slick ice, to the garage to run the car. Yesterday the front door was iced up and I couldn’t even open it. Thank you again for your words Laurie – they mean a lot to me.

I would not have made it grade-wise as I did not do well in math and while I liked biology, I was no whiz in chemistry or some other science classes. I also might have been been too emotional seeing animals when they were hurt as well. I used to like the James Herriott series of books when I was younger, the nice English country vet – they inspired me as well.

Thank you Mackenzie – I really do know that both walking and writing have become such a big part of my life. When I was younger, I traveled a lot and saw the world and having not done that for a while, it was time to get in touch with myself and enjoy what is going on around me – the nature experience has made me so much more aware of life on a smaller scale. The nature experience is a good way to start the day – I cannot wait for good weather as walking is sadly missing from my life with this fractious weather … there is some hope for this weekend if it is not too slick for walking on the trails.

I love that perspective! I think I will follow in your footsteps. We are in that travel season, and then I’m sure when life settles down, we will spend more time just enjoying what is right outside our door! Praying this weekend is good for ya.

I know what you mean about radio stations. I stream a “Golden Oldies” station.Every song is a gem!
I remember WordPress sending out year end reviews on how your blog did.I didn’t get one this year.Did you?

Btw,a true way of telling when Spring is happening is when the Trumpeters leave. Keep a eye on them and they will let you know when Spring is around the corner.

Yes I found those stations to be too loud, too much talking – even the commercials annoyed me! I could last 20 minutes at the most and that was it. I was streaming some music on YouTube as it tracks your favorites, but mostly I shut the music stations off and just listened to the news. My former “Oldies” station started including more 90s stuff – songs and artists I never heard of, though I was sure listening to music in the 90s. I love this station and they have long blocks of uninterrupted music. Thank you for the kudos on my blog Wayne … when I look back at six years, it has really morphed into more appreciation of nature once I started walking at more parks and less in the neighborhoods. And lots of photos too. But even in the neighborhoods, I have loved watching the birds and their young … from hatchlings to fledgings as I walked past them daily. And interacting with them, like whistling back at the songbirds. It is all about taking the time to immerse yourself in the experience … you know all about that feeling as well. I saw Trumpeters last week at the River and hoped they would head for the water so I could see them up close, but they zoomed on by. So as I head to my favorite haunt this morning, what will pique my interest today? I’d better enjoy this weekend … still another icy and wintry mix is in store mid-week.

On I-Tunes I go to the internet radio category “Golden Oldies” and stream channel 181. A excellent channel!
Our local radio is having problems.

I don’t have I-Tunes – is this just for Macs? When I got a new table radio, I wish I would have gotten one of the internet radios. I use a laptop, so I don’t stream music all the time because I think it drains the battery – I don’t know if that is an issue if you don’t untether it … I always have it plugged in. My new radio station just flipped from another type of music. They will begin a morning show on Monday, but I only listen to news in the early morning, then I’m gone walking (hopefully) so that won’t affect me. It is nice listening and knowing 90% or more of the songs once again.

Congrats on the six years! Your prolificacy has always been an inspiration, which I could use a lot more of these days. Sorry, I’m a little late getting to the party and commenting on this. I don’t comment a lot, anywhere, anymore. Truth is your blog is only one of two that I actually still subscribe. I’m glad we were able to connect back in the old Patch days. I related to your writing, right away because it seemed we were on similar paths, both on line and the actual beaten path. I’m happy so many folks have now discovered your work. Keep on keepin on…and packin plenty of snacks along the way….

I know you used to mention the prolificacy and I always said it was easier than your blog because I just write when I walk and not all walks are blog-worthy. Your blog is about humor, and not to be a Debbie Downer, but … it is hard to find humor in the world these days, unless you are writing satire like Johnny Robish. I’ll bet the other person you follow is Terry Marotta or Lori Duff – I follow both of them too. I have followed Terry since you recommended her in a blog post back in the day – she follows me as well here on WordPress. I’m happy to see Terry writing more after last year’s shoulder surgery. I enjoyed those Patch days before everything changed post-AOL. I always felt you took me under your wing when I joined the group. Thanks for that. 🙂 I got that walk in this morning – too bad we had a snow squall and I looked like “The Abominable” by the time I got home!
