“When the Frost is on the Punkin” * …

… it’s usually just frost and not snow! Well, they warned us the snow was coming overnight, or in the early morning, and this time the weather folks got it right! Yesterday’s snow event lasted about 15 minutes, with flakes flyin’ furiously, just enough to whiten the grass and leaves.

That pesky snow sugar-coated my Burning Bushes which haven’t even turned completely red yet – that’s real nervy Mother Nature!

Although I must admit the snowy Dwarf Spruce and Eunonymous both looked a little festive …

This wintry precip put down a snowy layer of “hair” on all the pumpkins which grace this porch and garden, much to my delight since I aimed to use this famous poem title for a post.

These pumpkins have also been delighting the neighborhood squirrels. I’ve come home from walking several times since Halloween to see a squirrel’s tail swishing back and forth behind one pumpkin, or paws inside another pumpkin, eating its way through the face. I’ve not been quick enough, or lucky enough, to get a shot of that though, but I’m hoping to have the camera ready the day I see a squirrel poking its head out of a pumpkin’s face and looking me right in the eye.

The weather here has been beyond crisp; it’s been downright cold, at the freezing mark and then a “real-feel” in the teens. Mother Nature teed up this blast of pre-Winter conditions, with a Canadian air mass headed our way the beginning of next week. They’re already calling it a mini Polar Vortex – well thanks Canada!

Last Sunday I was meandering along the perimeter path at my favorite nature nook, doling out peanuts and apples to any takers (there were very few) and I began dwelling on our impending Winter, that calendar date still many weeks away. I walked with my head down as the wind was gusting and it was cold as a pale sun was tucked behind the clouds. Ugh – the weather was nothing special. Winter USED TO BE when the wind howled outside, snowflakes were twinkling to the ground and you hunkered down and stayed indoors wearing fuzzy slippers, and a bulky cardigan – that scenario didn’t usually happen until December or January – not in early November! As I meandered, my mind wandered and I found myself wishing I was sipping a big mug of hot cocoa laden with fat puffy marshmallows, or eating comfort foods like shepherd’s pie, baked mac-n-cheese, or one of the hearty soups that my mom would have simmering on the stove in the heart of Winter. Heck, even a simple dish of Campbell’s Tomato Soup and a grilled cheese sandwich would have been wonderful to come home to after my walk on this blustery day. No, I was going home to put the yard to bed, do outside chores and rake leaves.

The whole time I was raking, I was thinking about that creamy tomato soup, which my mom made with Carnation milk to make it thick and creamy, and an ooey-gooey grilled cheese sandwich, cheese oozing out past the crust and in the corners of my mouth too. I decided I should buy the fixin’s to make this treat for myself the very next day.

So I popped into the grocery store, but being the untalented cook that I am, I decided to cut corners:

Yes, it tasted like the “real deal” if you stop to savor each chip slowly …

… otherwise it was a tasty, milder version of BBQ chips.

I gave it a fair taste test, polishing off half the bag at one sitting. I didn’t want to make a hasty judgment of course. 🙂

No worries, I also got the proper fixin’s to indulge properly – after all, how old am I and how difficult can this be anyway? It’s an easy enough assignment, right? So, next week, when the weather dips way way down, and the two to four inches of snow arrives, I’ll be in a nostalgic nirvana state of mind, burning my tongue on my Campbell’s Tomato Soup and dabbing melty cheese from the corners of my mouth.

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. 1. I never saw that flavor! I made grilled cheese often, especially in the summer with a fat tomato slice in it. Yum! This morning I went to the gym using my hoodie as a jacket like I’ve been doing since the temps dropped. Yikes! I have to dig out a coat. It’s not hoodie weather anymore. At least not outside!

I like grilled cheese … not fancy cheese, just the Kraft Singles. I usually don’t take the time to make it though, just toasting instead. My mom used to do tomatoes on hers too – she loved those beefsteak tomatoes from the farm stands. She also would do a thin slice of Vidalia onion during the “off season”. It got way too cold too fast and everything I wore just a few days ago was not warm enough this morning – it was 23 with a “real feel” of 18 and blustery. It was sunny so I could leave earlier to get more steps in, but it took me forever to warm up when I got home. Tomorrow morning I’ll need to get warmer clothes out for sure. Not looking forward to the snow and/or cold next week.

I had no idea chips came in that flavor. Great post Linda and great pictures! The snow on the evergreen does look rather festive – I’ve started listening to the Detroit radio station that plays Christmas music already. Grilled cheese and tomato soup is still one of my favorite cold winter day foods, but I always use Kraft cheese slices (I know they’re probably made of plastic but they melt great), and 2% milk for the soup. My mom made it once with 5% Half and Half Cream and it was way too rich for me. As you can see, I am starting to read again, although I despair of ever getting caught up…..maybe if we have a snowstorm or too. I think we are in for an early winter. My friend did my yardclean up for me yesterday and I don’t know how he could stand working outside for 4 hours!

Thanks Joni – glad you liked it and good to see you back here. You’ll have a difficult time catching up for sure, but you’ll be housebound if the Winter as it is projected right now, happens. The day I was reading “People” magazine at the hair salon and saw that story on Audrey Hepburn, I was looking at a feature on new products and saw them there. They are a limited run though. I have not had potato chips in awhile, except for Pringles – I kind of missed the regular potato chips or even potato sticks. Lighter and a little greasy on the fingers – “real” potato chips. Well, I forgot about them but I went down the bread aisle which is also the cracker and snack aisle and a vendor was just loading them onto the shelf. It was meant to be! So I got them and the other stuff then too. I just make toasted cheese sandwiches rather than make a mess, but I’m going to do it next week, maybe Tuesday, the day it only gets to 28. My mom always put Carnation milk in the pot and the soup looked orangey-looking. You’re right about Kraft Singles – I hear they aren’t real cheese but if they do the trick and melt nicely – go for it.

They have two stations that flipped to all-Christmas music as of November 1st – “The Breeze” 98.7 FM and also “WNIC” 100.3. So, if one fades away in your car while you’re driving, try the other one and they are both online streaming as well. They used to start at Thanksgiving time but they are competitors so they tried to beat each other.

I think we’re having an early Winter too – last year we had snow November 14th and I thought that was bad. We’re getting 2-4 inches of snow from Sunday night into Monday and during the day. So not something to look forward to and you’ll likely get the same. Are you home for good now and won’t be traveling back and forth to your mom’s house? Good thing you got the lawn done before the snow – did you end up doing the yard furniture etc.? I’d rather be outside in cold than in rain and it was quite cold and blustery this morning but no snow or ice, so off I went. The clock is ticking down for getting miles walked and then I can rest on my laurels, then begin again in 2020!

I’m home for good now – it was so nice to sleep in my sleigh bed again – I hadn’t slept there since mid-Sept due to the wasp problem – all the smell is gone now, but it had been almost four weeks since I last slept in my house – I woke up during the night and almost didn’t know where I was! There’s nothing like your own bed. We had sleet last Wed, and a skiff of snow on Thursday morning but nothing since. Yesterday I did an hours of yard work, pruning the older rose bushes, not the Knockouts as I don’t do them until spring, as I forgot to ask my lawn cutter to include them in the cleanup. It was nice being outside, sunny and cold but not freezing, although I wore my winter coat and hat. My cold seems better too, it should after five weeks! You’re right, I will never get caught up on Reader, so will just pick up new, and if I’m stuck inside this winter I will go back and read past posts. Am going to try to work on a short Remembrance Day post later today. I hope you make your walking goal, how many miles do you have left to do?

I wondered if you were home for good – it must feel great to be back home again and that means mom is 100% … what a tumultuous few months it has been for you Joni. The wasps, then that bad cold/cough and your mom’s health as well.

Our snow did not last long either and as cold as it was, I was surprised that the sun melted whatever had fallen within an hour or so . Not the case for Monday – I am hearing various accounts (you know the different models story they give us for not pinpointing the weather better) … we are getting three inches of snow Sunday and thru the day Monday. Not happy about that in the least – it is just too early for all that snow. We had snow flurries today when I was driving home- didn’t settle, just in the air, but still. It was bitter cold at the Park this morning. I intended to go to a bigger park, then took a look at the sky and it was a snow sky, very dark out and 14 mph wind, just 18 “real feel” – ugh. The weatherman said a chance of flurries in the 10:00 o’clock hour and I figured there is nothing to see color-wise as the leaves are down now, so stuck close to home, but the car needs a run. I’m glad to be done outside in this bitter cold, but have to rake again tomorrow – neighbor’s leaves on my property. My ornamental tree has not even turned red yet, let alone dropped its leaves.

I just looked at my total and as of today I am at 1,120 of 1,242 miles (122 miles left) … if this snow is here to stay, it will make it rougher to do as this Polar Vortex air we are getting this coming week, will cause ice issues I think, in the neighborhood and at the Park, so I will have to walk a block over at that Park in the parking lot or on the grass – no walking path there – that’s to get my steps done. Not enthused about the weather at all.

I wanted you to see a post I did for Halloween … do you remember me telling you how my friends and I dressed for the Millionaire’s Party in high school and I sewed my flapper outfit? I was going to save the pics for next year, since the year year is 2020 and make a reference to the “roaring 20s and the flapper era” but we were going to have such a crummy Halloween night with rain, I did a post about going as Little Red Riding Hood in the rain and the costume stained my new wool coat. I mentioned the red satin flapper dress (same material) and used the pic of me as well as our group of six who hung out through high school. Too bad my head, as well as that of my friend, also named Linda, were cut off at the top. The pictures are fairly close to the top of this post. https://lindaschaubblog.net/2019/10/31/a-fangtastic-halloween/

Thanks Linda – I will check it out. Saw the long range forecast on the news tonight and it is cold all next week, with flurries off and on. It is way too early, earlier than last year even. 122 miles is a lot to get in……unless you take some really long hikes!

I’m not liking the forecast Joni. So, is this the new norm, earlier Winters and Winter lasting way into April? Now one of the weather folks said we will have a mild week in December … it will get in the 40s. “The Old Farmers Almanac” said we’d have snow before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving. I’ve been able to get more steps since last week’s time change. On the weekends I aim for longer walks too. But 122 is daunting when I think of what lies ahead.

Thanks Fred – I was glad those pumpkins were still out and I could photograph them, just as soon as the flurries stopped. It was just the right amount of snow to get that “frost on the pumpkin” look. Interesting about that poem. I’ve heard it before, maybe as a child, but never knew it was “punkin” not “pumpkin” and I have used the expression many times in the past in my blog – now I know I used it incorrectly. So, last night I learned I was wrong all along, though I think everyone says “pumpkin” and I loved that video too. The old pictures, especially in the opening part and the way of pronouncing the words – great video. Yes, I thought I would leave those chips out to whet everyone’s appetite for them. I’ve not had “real” potato chips in ages, just Pringles from time to time, so this was a treat. I made sure they did not get stale! 🙂

Glad you liked the snow on the “punkins” Ally. As soon as it started snowing fast and furiously, I made sure to get outside to get pictures of them. I knew it was a quick whitening on the grass – none stuck to the cement and the snow vanished without a trace once the sun came out. Those pumpkins looked great with the snow plopped on top! I was at the hair salon a few weeks ago and was reading “People” magazine while there and that magazine has a page of new products and I saw them there – the article said they are a limited flavor. When I was at the store, the Frito Lay vendor was just stacking the shelves with them. Serendipity!

I liked this kind of snow Laurie – once it stopped I took photos then I could still have a quick walk. I stayed in the neighborhood and nothing was slick (if you didn’t wipe out on the wet leaves). At the grocery store, there was an entire aisle devoted to pumpkin treats; there was even two kinds of pumpkin-flavored cold cereal. Your grandsons would like that taste treat, but why eat cold cereal when your grandma makes you waffles? Yes, give them a try, but hurry as they are a limited flavor.

Now I’m longing for tomato soup, but I have to be really in the mood because no one will share it with me. Tomato soup was comfort food when I was growing up. Our temperatures are heading downward. I think we may get out our winter coats in a few days. It was 31 degrees when we walked this morning. i was comfortable with a sweatshirt, windbreaker, and knitted hat.

Anne – Glad you liked this post. You know I thought of you when taking pictures of all the wet and snowy red leaves – they were really vibrant from the snow. I ran outside the minute the snow stopped to get the pumpkin shots – I knew that snow would not last long, despite the cold. I have to get more warmer clothes out before walking tomorrow. I thought I had on enough clothes this morning, but it was a “real feel” of 18 and very blustery. I had fleece pants on, but need heavier pants and a polar fleece vest tomorrow. My hands were freezing as I thought I could get away with light gloves to use for taking pictures and that was a big mistake. We’ve got a cloudy weekend and I wanted some shots of the trees before all the leaves were gone while it was sunny. The Arctic Blast is coming and 2-4 inches of snow Sunday into Monday, so shoveling, not walking for me. Ugh!

      • Shoveling will be good exercise! I miss moving snow off the driveway. John and I used to do it together, and we’d almost get overheated. We have a flat driveway now, and snow rarely gets deep enough to call for a shovel.

I don’t mind shoveling snow except when the snow plow pushes it to the end of the driveway and it freezes or is not movable the next day without nearly breaking your back. Other than that, if you’re dressed for, I don’t mind.

I know they are only available for a short time – so don’t go down the snack aisle at Meijer and you won’t be tempted! I almost put in the post “watch me try this Diane and burn the grilled cheese or something!” A few years ago I did a post about making tapioca – my mom made “fish eyes and glue” with the big pearls. I saw them in a store and decided to make it. OMG – you could have used it for wallpaper paste. I loved being a cheater, at least they came out with no muss-no fuss and best of all, no dishes! If you try them, hurry up as they are a limited time item. 🙂

That’s funny Diane and my mom always referred to it as “fish eyes and glue” … icky thought though. I started to send you the link I posted about making tapioca pudding one time around the holidays (a BIG fail for me) and realized I already sent it to you and you commented that you can buy it in the little containers … that is what I do now and for the rice pudding too, instead of eating yogurt all the time. My mom was in the hospital for four years, from age 11 to 15, and she said they always had the same foods in the kids ward – she said “creamed peas on toast” and “fish eyes and glue” were things she said she’d never eat again. She probably just made the pudding for my father and me. My father said he ate a lot of rutabagas (we call them turnips in Canada – they are the rutabagas here, not the tiny turnips) … he said he’d never eat another one and I didn’t like them either, so when she made turnip, she’d load it with butter and eat most of it herself, though she made me eat a small portion “as it’s good for you.” (That and chicken livers – hated both things.)

Thanks Rebecca and when the sun came out, the snow was gone – it sure wasn’t because it was warm and I was surprised how powerful the sun’s rays were on such a cold day. Our Fall was not stellar this year and we have 2-4 inches of snow and an Arctic Blast coming up – this is not the norm for SE Michigan and I’m assuming it is all part of global warming. I thought the chips were an interesting flavor too. They (Lay’s/Frito Lay) are being creative like Pringles who offers up a “turkey dinner” in the form of their potato chips.

Sabine – we never get snow this early and we all thought last year was a fluke on November 14th when it snowed. It was about the same amount as the other day. However, we are getting 1-3 inches of snow Sunday into Monday – they are leaning toward the 3-inch mark according to all my weather stations I follow. Today I was driving home from the Park and it was flurrying. It didn’t stick but it sure was cold – we had 28 degrees with a real feel of 18 and the wind was about 14 mph. It was not a pleasant day for walking at all, but no snow/ice, so I just went out. Now that I tasted “real potato chips” again, not sure I’ll go back to Pringles … I buy them occasionally, but just the smaller sized can. These were tasty – I used to love BBQ chips but gave up all that stuff as I watch my sodium. Everything has sodium in it – bread especially, but I won’t give up bread, especially since Dave’s is back on the shelf.

Pringles potato chips has a Thanksgiving dinner (on Amazon’s site, not in stores) – you eat various combinations of chips that taste like turkey, duck, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie. Yes really. And they said the other day it was already sold out … check out the price for it. Amazing!

Thimble sized mugs of cream of tomato soup would warm my furry friends up … I have to look into it. I’ll bring a Thermos bottle and I’ll pour. Ha ha about the hot tub. Today I just went to Council Point Park as they were calling for snow flurries and decided to feed my guys instead – they ate everything again, didn’t bury any of it, same as my porch pals. They are smart – they know there is no use burying it in this cold weather and after the recent snow (even though it melted a few hours later) – despite their efforts, they’ll never dig through the frozen earth, nor the snow. They have to get their nourishment now. Can you imagine them, one leg/paw hanging off the side of a hot tub, lounging away, a drink with an umbrella in it and wanting peanuts delivered to them?

      • I’m not sure Linda but I think they keep eating until they instinctively know they have enough fat reserves built up…..than they begin to bury.

Now I know for sure I have to stop there this morning before I head out anywhere else Wayne. I found it odd that both sets of squirrels (Park and home) haveresorted to eating peanuts at the same time … just in the last week. I’m wondering if it had something to do with the time change? I’m going to have to Google around when I get a chance and see if that has some correlation? Just like that, the only ones carrying away peanuts are the jays … they never eat them on the path or on my porch. The squirrels are eating their peanuts as the shells are left and I saw them while doing my walk yesterday – returned home to the same scenario on the porch. I think this premature Winter-like weather is messing with their instincts and their heads! I know it is messing with my head!

Thanks Pam- that snow was just enough to give some nice colorful shots … like you I liked the juxtaposition of the brilliant red and bright orange versus stark white. That snow was gone in a few hours, but it was a trial run for yesterday – we’ve received almost 7 inches of snow in 24 hours’ time. Likely the pumpkins are almost covered. We have a real feel of 6 degrees this morning – not looking forward to shoveling snow at 6 degrees – yikes! It was the heavy snow on top of it … I shoveled 2 inches of it yesterday morning and pushed it as it was heavy. My neighbor did my driveway and sidewalks – I’ll tackle the backyard patio and sidewalk this morning … well maybe. Another inch of snow fell after he shoveled. Like you, our weather was very moderate – I worked outside raking leaves and walked six miles Sunday and it was 45 degrees – the snow began in earnest a mere 12 hours later.

I have never seen that flavor either. Amazing what they make. 🙂

I know! It was a limited flavor unfortunately but it did taste like grilled cheese and tomato soup, the perfect comfort food.

I know – they keep tweaking and tweaking the traditional flavors. Then, people like the new flavors and they make them with a limited run. That was a treat for me as I gave up salty foods for Lent several years ago … occasionally I will have a salty snack, but I try not to. I used to give up something for Lent every year and just stop eating it permanently, then I left myself with no treats at all. I never had any sweets or treats for years, then my friend (a woman I met while walking at the Park, but has since moved to another city) started bringing me over sweet treats at Christmas, Easter and for my birthday, so I decided maybe I could have a few treats every so often.

Same here, they always seem to stop making the things I like. Must be no one else really likes them. 🙂

And if they don’t stop making it outright, they often tweak the taste or otherwise mess up how it used to taste which is also annoying sometimes.

You know, I’m not great with long comments but I always love it when you point me to the older posts! I’m worried for all sorts of reasons this fall … Let’s go out heaps right now, while we can! All the best. Stay safe

Glad you enjoyed this post Jeanine … after I mentioned the early snow, I had to send it to you. I was torn – I have a post where freezing rain drizzled on my rose bushes … I called it “Jack Frost Nipping At Your Nose” … we had a rainy Fall and I never got the roses cut down. Today our weather folks (on two stations) said we are having a La Nina Winter – lots of snow. They said that last year … I figure we have enough to worry about right now, so no angst over Winter … yet. You stay safe too.
