Just zipping off a note to say …

“It’s time to wish you Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah.”

This is a short and sweet post … even a bit bittersweet.

Everyone has their Christmas traditions and I’ve had a few through the years … just like you.

Christmas in July.

One such ritual was that my mom and I used to attend the annual Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Preview Party every July. A few weeks before the event, I’d stop at the card store and pick up that year’s “Dream Book” and we’d peruse it, dog-earing the pages where ornaments of interest would appear. Then, on a steamy hot mid-July day, we’d go to our favorite Hallmark store and mix and mingle with the crowd of Hallmark Keepsake Ornament collectors, while munching on Christmas cookies, sipping hot chocolate or punch, admiring the holiday décor and listening to Christmas music in the background. We’d buy an ornament or two in the air-conditioned store, then step back outside into the sweltering July temps. The ornament(s) would be tucked away until Thanksgiving weekend when I hauled out all the holiday treasures.

After we collected enough miniature ornaments to fill up our tree at home, as well as my tree at work, just to keep the tradition going, every year Mom bought me a collectible ornament to sit on a shelf or hang on a stand. I collected teddy bears for years, so some ornaments were bears, but I always loved Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, so one year Mom bought me the ornament called “Literary Ace” – the paper in Snoopy’s typewriter is devoid of words, except the year of the ornament’s debut: 2002.

Well I adored that little ornament and insisted on putting it front and center on the corner cabinet in the kitchen.

The years rolled by and Snoopy appeared in other collectible ornaments, but not as a writer … until 2009.

I stopped and picked up the “Dream Book” just like usual, but my mom was having a lot of issues with dizziness and very unsteady on her feet at that time, so she insisted I go to the Ornament Preview Party by myself, but, before I left, she pressed some money into my hand to buy the latest Snoopy “writer” ornament entitled “Once Upon a Holiday” and, as you see below, everyone’s favorite beagle is busy typing once again. So, is he typing a second draft of the Great American Novel?

The paper in the typewriter reads: “It was a bright and merry night.” Woodstock looks on, perhaps proofreading Snoopy’s work?

Did Mom have a premonition I’d be a blogger one day? Hmm – well, who knows about that musing, but it is the last ornament she ever bought for me, one decade ago, so it is a cherished possession.

The two Snoopy ornaments sit side by side on the bottom shelf of the corner cabinet every holiday season.

Always cherish the memories, objects and people that bring you joy – here’s hoping your holiday will be filled with much joy and love.

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. I enjoyed your memories of ornament-collecting. My mother loved Peanuts and would have liked your special Snoopy ones.

My mom knew I was a writer, but she was gone long before I began to blog. She used my letters from England for a program at her book club. I hadn’t thought of that in a long time. I’ll bet out mothers would be proud of us!

Thanks Anne – they are really cute and right in my line of vision as I sit at the kitchen table to use my computer. I have a Snoopy/Peanuts train that I used to set up at Christmas time on a wooden table. John would like that, though it is Peanuts-themed and not the locomotives that he is used to seeing … this is what it looks like:

I think it is nice your mom used your letters in that manner. I am sure they were long and newsy all those miles away. I think you are right – our moms would be pleased they created such prolific bloggers!

All the non-tree decorations are downstairs in red and green Rubbermaid tubs. I have to look for the pictures of those ornaments next year and use them in a post if I can find them – it’s a shame as I likely won’t take everything out again. Maybe I have to be like Mrs. Moss (the woman I wrote about last year who had the Christmas village) and leave it out year around.

  2. Our ritual was the absolute and correct way to put tinsel on a tree. One strand at a time. No throwing a bunch. My mother turned into something out of Gestapo when the tinsel came out. It was all in fun though. I haven’t seen real tinsel in decades. It’s probably bad for the environment. Most of the rest of our rituals revolved around food. I didn’t bake this year. I feel a little let down about it. I can’t get the stuff my mother baked at a bakery so we will go without this year. Maybe on a cold wintry January day, I’ll bake a batch. I did make strudel for the family though — cabbage, potato and cheese. It was appreciated.

I don’t remember much about the real tinsel or the real Christmas trees as we got a silver one around 1963. I remember my parents saved the tinsel though and it was kind of heavy and made your hands black tinged (like the silver tree if you touched it). Hey decorating was an art – we’d spend a couple of hours decorating a tabletop tree to get it just so.

You had a lot of appointments going on around Thanksgiving and they keep saying this is the shortest amount of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas (as it pertains to people behind in their Christmas shopping). The strudel sounds good – nice comfort food for the colder days. My mom used to make meat pies in individual ceramic dishes … she’d be making the pies in the morning when I left for work and would bake them later. I’d leave the house with my mouth watering from the ingredients she’d be browning etc. at 7:30 – 8:00 in the morning. That was a favorite of mine – I’d be thinking about dinner all day.

      • My mom made meat pies too. They were a mix of beef and pork and actual pie size so one pie was supper for all.

My mom’s meat pies were ground round and she simmered the meat in poultry seasoning – I can remember that savory smell. She had peas and onions inside and gravy on top – the only thing that spoiled that meal was she cooked turnip (your rutabagas here in the U.S.) and mashed it up – I’d wrinkle my nose at that and I did not fight her for it. Our friend and neighbor was Scottish and she said it was a tradition for Christmas or New Year’s (I don’t recall now) to take a friend a meat pie, so she showed up with a warm, full-sized pie every year!

      • My mom made it from roasts. She pulled the meat to make the pies. carrots, onions, peas and potatoes all diced (except for the peas!). Yum!

That was lovely Linda! And I loved the Snoopy ornaments. I have a number of writing angels with pen in hand on my fire mantelpiece, given to me by friends over the years for inspiration. The Hallmark store carries them too but I don’t know what they are called. The next time I’m there I’ll have to check out the ornaments. I always stop by in November to get their free purse-size calendar, which I use for appointments…..I know most people now use their cell phone calendars, but I prefer the paper ones. I see it took Snoopy 7 years to write that second draft!

Thanks Joni -I am glad you liked it. The writing angels sound nice too and how nice of your friends to give them to you for inspiration – to write? The Hallmark store closed last year after decades of being in that location. There were new owners and they raised their rent over double and so they closed up shop.
About twenty years ago, they took over a store next door and it became more than just a card store with lots of other non-Hallmark items. I always went in for the little pocket calendar and the wallet plastic year at a glance calendar too. I was sorry to see them go and I don’t get to the mall much so don’t know if that Hallmark is still at Southland Mall. A few years ago I was thinking about the ornament preview and wondered if it was online and looked and relived some memories. So they now have the book online – here is the 2019 version and I’ll bet a lot of those items have been sold out months ago – they put them out in mid-July.
      https://www.hallmark.com/digital-dream-book/

At the Ornament Preview Party, it was a Saturday and Sunday and we usually went the first day and were there when they opened for the best selection. They also had door prizes and we bought all our cards there and jigsaw puzzles (my mom loved doing them). If they sold out of the ornaments you liked over the preview weekend, they would special order them for you at no extra cost. We did that a few times for popular ornaments. I had a co-worker who had collected the regular-sized Hallmark ornaments for years and she lives alone but has two full-sized trees to display them all. (And I can’t even put up one miniature tree!)

Thanks Linda, I took a quick look online. I wonder though with so many people color-coordinating their trees with themes like designers, that the Hallmark tradition continues? I don’t bother with a tree either, as I don’t have the floor space for one, but have lots of other sparkly display things on tables and the fireplace. My mom used to do jigsaw puzzles too. I would buy her one every year for Christmas before she started painting. I never had the patience for those, although I’d sometimes sit down and put in a few pieces. We still have a Hallmark store at the mall, but how it survives I don’t know. I buy my few cards at the dollar store or the grocery store now. Hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunny weather! I may get in a walk or two myself.

About twenty years ago we had a Christmas tree store set up their shop a few blocks away. My neighbor went in and fell in love with a pink and ivory-colored Victorian tree on display. She bought the tree and all the pink glass ornaments and trimmings to duplicate that tree on display. She got the tree up and wanted me to go look at it. It was nearly to the ceiling, and all the decorations were light pink and a lot of frou frou … there were ribbons and bows and beads in pink or gold and silver – very sparkly looking. And there were feathers sticking out on branches and feather boas draped everywhere. She said “what do you think?” I said “well … it’s really something!” I’d never seen a tree quite like that before and it didn’t look like a Christmas tree no more than our aluminum tree did. The following year she lost her pet cat she had for years. She was lonely and got another cat. She put the tree up and went to work and when she came home, the cat had gotten up into the tree, knocked it down, got scared when it was trapped under the tree and clawed everything in sight. She came home to a real mess plus broken ornaments as well. I don’t think she ever put the tree up again and “Sassy” (her aptly named cat) was gone the next day.

I got cards for years from “Guiding Eyes for the Blind” and finally had more than I can ever use as I only send a few out (mostly my mom’s friends) and didn’t send in a donation when they send cards. The rest I got from Shutterfly where I store my photos. Shutterfly has “10-free cards” giveaways sometimes and you just pay shipping and handling.

We had a gray day and freezing fog again and more fog tonight and tomorrow morning – sigh. At least it is a holiday, so I have some wiggle room. Wear your new Winter coat and clothes and enjoy a walk before the snow flies!

I think those pink trees were in at one time, as my SIL gave my mom one of those table-top ones which she still has. They’re always coming up with something new. One year when we had a full house over Xmas, I had to sleep on the couch and stayed up late reading a book. One of my sisters cats (she brought them home in a cage over the holidays), climbed into the tree and it fell over during the middle of the night. I got up and tried to rescue it, but it was a mess best left til daylight! Foggy Christmas Eve – a night for Rudolph. I walked Christmas Day and will today, but can’t wear my new coat as it’s a down filled parka best left for frigid days and it’s like spring out there! Above 40 F for the next week too. It’s okay with me, I’d rather have mild weather, shortens the winter up, but am wondering if the coat will be a waste of money?

Those pink trees didn’t look like trees – it is like the trees with the flocking that are supposed to look like snow – they never looked too real either. You are right – that is a very warm parka … you’ll be too hot and I could have used a Spring coat on my walk this morning – 48 degrees when I returned home and we got to 58 degrees and broke a record today. I hope it lasts for another few weeks – anything is better than the thought of a snowy and cold Winter.

Glad you liked those memories and ornaments Laurie. I am surprised that Hallmark would issue another ornament that was so similar to the first one, but I’m happy to have both of them. I did take some writing classes in high school – my mom never knew about my blog and I don’t think I ever mentioned an interest in starting one. Actually, it was my neighbor who kept sending me other people’s blog posts and saying “you can do this – do it so I have more stuff to read!” So I did.

    Linda,
Love the Charlie Brown cartoons and your memories – I always think you remember a lot of things- I have forgotten a lot of things – sometimes wilfully as they were not happy memories but some memories linger long after the bitterness is gone.
Love the Snoppy ornaments and your memories. I know you miss your mon and remember her every day but especially during Christmas time- she made so many memories for you- even when she was ill- she was a great mother and is watching over you as you write and share and protect our environment and love the littlest of heaven’s creatures in your own special way- almost like being a Santa Linda for those creatures through the year.
Thinking of you on Christmas eve, Linda and hope you are planning to take a Christmas Break.

Hi Susie – I thought of you when I photographed and wrote about the two Snoopys as I know you like Peanuts cartoons. Are you still getting the daily Peanuts comic strip for a morning smile?

Unfortunately there will always be bad memories that try to crowd out the good memories and that is true for all of us. I try to be like Pollyanna and think only of the good stuff, though I did feel a little sad thinking it was a decade ago – ten years has slipped by pretty quickly Susie.

I do feel like Santa Linda sometimes with the Park critters. I took a lot of photos over the weekend of the squirrels, especially your pal Parker begging shamelessly – I have not looked at them, but will tomorrow or on Christmas. I am off for Christmas and will leave work early tomorrow. Enjoy your time back with your family Susie … as the saying goes “there is no place like home.” – Linda

Thanks Wayne – I made sure to dust off that bottom shelf before I took a picture. And to dust the two sets of duck feet on the second shelf as well. This house used to look better – I am not as neat as I once was (especially when my mom, who was a neat freak, was still here). The house/furniture is Early American and the kitchen has a country theme to it. You could see three ducks on the shelves; and me now just looking around I see six more ducks (4 decoys, a wreath and a trivet) and four roosters – it makes it homey looking. I should have thought to see if Hallmark has done any more Snoopy writer ornaments – I know they have a place you can buy old ornaments if you have one that gets broken, or lost or you want to complete a “series” of a special theme. Maybe I’ll look there and see if I can make three.

Those little ornaments hold such precious memories. I am glad you shared that tradition with us. I was not blogging before my mom passed either but I don’t think she would be surprised. She would probably be my biggest fan – except for my husband. I know that bittersweet feeling of celebrating the holidays without mom. So much about the way we celebrate has changed since she passed away. I know that I am blessed to still have lots of family to celebrate with but there will always be that sadness as well. Will you be alone for Christmas Linda? We have family coming around noon (and plan on eating around 1:00) I know it is quite a drive but you would be welcome to join us. The weather is supposed to be good so it would be a nice day for a drive.

I am glad you like the post Ruth. I really need to put out more Christmas decor next year … I feel like I’ve been behind with everything in my life the past six months. It started with all the house issues and my smashed finger in June, then, between being so busy at work and busier with blogging, I am very disorganized with the house. I have, for many years, bought as many pantry items in advance of Winter so I don’t have to worry about going out in the bad weather. I think I mentioned it to you or I have posted about this ritual. This is because I don’t like driving in snow/ice. I usually do this in late Summer/early Fall, but this year I got a late start “gathering groceries” and there is still clutter everywhere. I have never in my life, just marched out the door to walk or do my own thing and left behind a mess like I have this year. But this year, I have known many people who are suffering with life-threatening illnesses and three people who have lost their life due to chronic health problems. A close friend of mine, who first battled cancer and then had a brain bleed and was hospitalized for two months earlier this year, is trying to beat it into my head to go out and put blinders on and live for the moment … so I have done that this year with minimal regrets. My mother looking down is rolling her eyes no doubt. As much as I loved here, we never saw eye-to-eye with housework as she was a neat freak and I never was. So, I could not in good conscience decorate … next year I will decorate and share some more Christmas decor, especially the bears … I collected them for years, so there are many decorative items that are teddy bear related. This post was bittersweet to write … ten years and sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago and sometimes like it was yesterday. My mom passed away on January 31, 2010. Yes you are lucky to have a lot of family to surround you and celebrate this special day. Thank you for inviting me to your home – it is an honor and very much appreciated, but I do feel like it is a day to spend with family, but thank you so much for your invitation – that is kind of you. Merry Christmas to you and yours Ruth.

I have been dealing with the fact that I am not able to do everything that I used to this year after getting a shocking diagnosis around this time last year. I haven’t yet blogged about it but will be soon.
You are welcome for the invitation just as you would be welcome to attend. There have been many people adopted into our family over the years because they accepted an invitation to one of our family events.

I thank you again Ruth, and have to tell you that my next door neighbor invited me to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner after my mom passed away and I did not take her up on her offer – she said “you know everyone in my family” and that was true … it just felt a little funny doing it, so I did not. I think you will have better weather for tomorrow’s gathering than the tail end of your Halloween gathering. I think you just got the outside trail walk to the candy “stations” done and got back and it started to rain if memory serves me right. We have a lot of fog tomorrow they say – the price we pay for the warmer weather I guess. Merry Christmas to you Ruth.

I did not even set the alarm last night as I knew it was going to be freezing fog this morning, so that kind of killed my trip to Elizabeth Park, and even to Council Point Park. I got up late for me and hate that the day will slip by quickly. The sidewalks had a light glaze when I looked outside when I got up – not sure of what is going on now as we’re still just a few degrees above freezing and the fog is there but lifting. It is hard to tell but it will be 54-56 this afternoon – unheard of for Christmas Day. I’d have been happier had it stayed cold and clear and not added freezing fog to the mix.

But, we had freezing fog in the morning – it was thick as pea soup and slippery so I waited until 1:30 to go out and just stayed local. It was a kind of disjointed day. So yesterday I went back to Elizabeth Park and though it was gray and dismal looking, the weather was clear and dry so I took a lot of bird shots while there. There were not too many people. We have rain right now – just pouring and will do so all day, then transition to the white stuff sometime tomorrow – ugh. Are you giving yourself a little rest after all the holiday cooking?

I am glad to leave the holiday season behind for that very reason, plus this has been a difficult decade, fraught with loss and sadness – I am ready for a new year and decade and hopefully better days. I wish you the same for you and yours Pam.

Aww…such a beautiful post. The ornaments are adorable! I’m smiling, thank you for sharing your tradition with us. I think your mom did know you’d be a blogger someday! I’m glad you are one, that’s for sure!

Glad you liked it Shelley – I thought this post was begging to be written/shared … the 10th anniversary and surely it tied in with blogging. I actually had a few more nostalgic posts I intended to write and ran out of time, then I didn’t want to go past 1,400 posts either – they can be for next year.

  18. Oh, how sweet. I love the thought of the Snoopy ornament with the typewriter as it just seems like it was made especially for you ❤❤
