About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Thanks Anne – every Spring I stop at Calvary Lutheran Church which is about a 1/2 mile from my house. A woman parishioner volunteers her time for the garden – it is a nice perennial garden and there are gorgeous tulips which I always go back to see these bright yellow beauties and take pics of them. She and I have chatted many times as I stop to tell her how nice it looks, and the statues amidst the flowers – wow. I saw the statue listing in mid-air … it’s not propped up against the boulder … I knew a blog post was bubbling up in my brain. Lots of patience for that video – just watch it and breathe in deeply.

    You’re seeing more colors where you are than we are here. It’s still more wintry-looking than I’d like to see, but there you go. When spring springs here I’ll be more than ready for it.

      Ally – I agree with you. I go past that church on the way to the Park all the time and had been watching for sprouts as I usually feature portions of the garden every Spring in blog posts. It seems I walked by one day and there was nothing, then the crocuses, snowdrops and daffodils were out and in bloom. Other than that, everything is still dull and gray and blah here too. The woman who volunteers her time at the church does a beautiful job tending to the garden and grounds – she is a parishioner there. I’ll return when the tulips come out – there are a lot of yellow tulips and I take pictures of them every year.

    Thank you Laurie for your kind words … indeed right now we need to keep the faith – sometimes it is all we have. I knew you’d appreciate this, especially after the beautiful purple crocus you featured in your post. Now to see if it is light outside and time to go commune with nature a little more.

    Our trees have started to bloom. We are at least 2 weeks early. Hopefully there won’t be a late snow squall although the 10 day forecast is not showing any truly cold weather. Spring is healing. I have never been happier to see it.

      I’ve noticed some trees too and we had a couple of inches of snow Monday morning, but the rain whisked it away. I hope this is it and we can concentrate on warm weather – yes, Spring is healing Kate and very welcome right now.

        We had a frost overnight. We haven’t had frost in in weeks. I don’t think we had frost in all of February.

        The weather is just wacky – we had a lot of rain and freezing rain this weekend. Right now it is pouring out and we’re slated for a rainy weekend and lots of rain next week. People here may be mowing lawns sooner than they thought.

    These are my first view of spring flowers, I have not see any around here yet. I loved the videos. I was going to try that this summer. Lots of rain coming up so maybe that will give the flowers a little boost. Beautiful photos Linda,

      Glad you liked the flowers Sandra. Not yet open, but the sunny and warmer day we had today and it’s going to rain most of the weekend coming up, so that will help them out. The videos were really amazing – a lot of work. I’ll look forward to seeing your video(s) once your seeds take and thrive.

        I am excited to try a video like that, it will take a lot of photos. I think the video said he took 50, 000 shots. I know I take like 6000 photos to do a short time lapse of a sunrise. It will be fun to try.

        I saw that in the story and was in awe of what work went into making that video … I am amazed that you have to take 6,000 shots to make a short time lapse of a sunrise – wow. You have your work cut out for you Sandra.

        Yes, and 6000 shots equals about a 2 min video. I just set my camera up on a tripod and let it do the work. The first time I tried it, I only set it up for 1000 shots, thinking that is a lot of photos. It turned out to be a 2 second video. 🙂

        That is amazing – I would have had no idea about needing that many shots to make a video – he had the patience of a saint it seems.

        Yes, and it is about setting the camera up on a tripod and changing the battery or hooking the camera to a battery pack. I have done that a few times when I know it isn’t going to rain. I just haven’t learned the right settings to use yet. I keep trying. I am going to work on that again this summer, night lapse photos. I set the camera up to run all night to watch the stars.

        Oh that is exciting – I never thought about the camera battery, yes, that would be a drain on the battery to be sure, no wonder you would need a battery pack.

        I’m looking forward to retirement so I can learn more about the camera. I decided to use the seagull pics with the fish in the mouth – they were not so clear, but my post are mostly funny pictures. But I was looking at the sun, so it did not lend itself for a good picture as I shooting blindly.

        I have done that many times, looking into the sun, I like to try and get sun rays in some photos, but it doesn’t always work. And I sometimes I just point and shoot and look at the photo later. A nice surprise now and then. 🙂

        The fishing seagulls were not that clear as I looked in the sun but I’m lucky with some pictures like the funny seagulls … it was sunny each of the days on the water so I do have lots to learn about camera adjustments; in the meantime I just point and shoot too and wait to be surprised later. You have a good day Sandra. I hope to get a walk in but we are going to have some sporadic rain (again) … it is still windy, but not as bad as yesterday when we had gusts all day at 35-45 mph – some have lost power, not as many as expected and I thankfully have power. Yesterday it was 62 degrees at this time and this morning it is about 20 degrees colder.

        What a difference in temps for sure. Here it is the same weather, so cold yesterday with that wind. I am glad no tree branches fell down. We have so many big old trees around the neighborhood. Have a good day also.

        Yes, that wind was scary – we got to 62 mph at Metro Airport yesterday. Thankfully no incidents, nor power lost.

      Yes, those first beautiful, warmish and sunny days of Spring are the best. I see lots of buds out already – it was a treat seeing these Springy flowers at this church. I hope that is it for snow until the end of the year!

    Great pictures! I’m seeing bird’s nests everywhere too. But once the leaves come in, it’ll be harder to see them.

      I’m glad you liked them and that video is really a work of art isn’t it? The bird and squirrels’ nests are all exposed during the Winter and I marvel at their construction. We will not have any trees leafing out for a while here, but there are buds, so there is hope. We have magnolias in the neighborhood – always beautiful until a big rain or a windy day sends those pretty petals onto the ground. I’m sorry I don’t know your name and I could not find it on your site. You enjoy the explosion of color as well.

        I’ve always marveled at the time-lapse videos. If only our eyes could see it happening in real time. That would be an amazing experience.
        I quickly glanced at a new’s article that said birds are the best engineers! It’s instinctual for them.

        I really liked that video too – I know a lot of work went into it. A fellow blogger, who is a photographer, birds mostly, also liked the video and told me that it takes 6,000 still shots to make a two-minute video … I had no idea.

        Birds are pretty amazing Esther. Our family had pet birds for years and I do not understand where the expression “bird brain” originated. It is simply not true. I walked past that church where I took the flower and angel pictures and saw a small nest on an eaves trough – looking forward to documenting what bird and babies I see there. I’ve done that in recent years in the Spring and posted pics in my blog.

        Thank you for telling me your name – I looked all over your blog site and could not find it. Perhaps I need stronger glasses?

      I am too Diane – I don’t have any flowers in the yard but my neighbor does so I should look and see if there are any crocuses in her yard. I can remember seeing them covered with snow in the past. That time lapse of the flowers is amazing isn’t it? Think Spring and stay safe.

      You are way ahead of us Ari. A fellow blogger from the UK blogger kept mentioning the green grass and ours is like the rest of the landscape: dull and blah looking. Yes, those are the first Spring flowers at a church I pass on my walks. They have a beautiful magnolia tree and tulips so I’ll be stopping by to get pictures of them in April. The magnolia bushes and trees are beautiful, but if a big wind blows, you could lose all the petals in one fell swoop.

        oh I do miss my tulips, I used to have red riding hood tulips and queen of the night black tulips but when we relocated I gave the bulbs to my parents as I didn’t have a garden when I moved temporarily into my mother in laws house.

        Whenever I see photos of flowers it makes me get all excited about doing more in my garden.

        We just managed to get out in the garden more this weekend, I found loads of wildflowers throughout the lawn and my partner was sweet enough to mow around much of them so the bees still had lots of flowers to enjoy.

        Ah, that is the reward for no more tulips. I want to get a book about wildflowers as I often try to find the names online and it is near impossible to discern one from the other – maybe that will be a 2021 project when things are normal again. I wonder if you’ll be lucky enough to find a bunny’s nest in the grass too. A friend just discovered one in her yard the other day – they make it anywhere, even out in the open.

        I was surprised this morning when I went out and it was dreary and gray like it would pour raining any minute. An all-weekend rain and high winds too. I guess it is still “March winds, but early for April showers.” Don’t put your new Winter coats away yet Joni. Well maybe the puffy one.

        I was not on as much today either – yay me (for once). I have to do my post tomorrow for Monday as I got here later as it was thundering for a while. I’ve not taken out my lighter clothes yet … I never wore my storm coat this Winter. I didn’t wear it last Winter as it was too heavy on my shoulder, so it is still in the bag. I might get a walk in tomorrow morning before the next bout of rain arrives, but it is supposed to be real windy – we have a wind advisory for tonight and thorugh 8:00 p.m. Sunday, so maybe not. Those ol’ March winds.

    Miss Linda………………………………yes there are many signs of spring…………..especially hearing the birds singing…………………………….and seeing all of the fresh greenery coming up…………………….it gives us some hope……………………………amid all of the people being laid off and stores that are closed and restaurants closed

      Yes Ann Marie – Spring never fails us, returning each year, sometimes later than usual – this year earlier. There are buds all over and I’ve seen those crocuses had popped their heads out of the earth and then be covered in snow last Monday and still they survive. The birds singing give us hope too. There is so much going on around us that I have to stop and take a deep breath to carry on.

    Very nice images. We’ve had sort of a second spring around here. I noticed buds on many of the trees several weeks ago but now they are gone. The good news is that other trees and plants are starting to bloom. We’ve had some nice rain so the plants are very happy.

      Thanks Janis – glad you liked this Spring spurt. We had three days of rain and all of a sudden our grass has greened up. I really like when the flowering trees all bloom, especially the magnolias – to me, that is Spring’s official arrival!

      I don’t know Pam – it is a little eerie to me. I stop at this church several times each Spring when all the perennials start coming up – they have some beautiful tulips and a gorgeous magnolia tree and I also take their pictures. So I was there for Spring-y pics. As soon as I saw the angel listing when I went over to see the flowers, I knew it was going to be a blog post. As you see from the angle of the angel, she is not leaning on the bricks that are nearby, nor against the wall of the church either. I got up close to it, but didn’t touch the statue but I am wondering if maybe there is a sturdy sake of some sort underneath it and it is bent or damaged, so it keeps it from falling to the ground? I sent the blog post in a message to the church Facebook site and said I often chat with the woman who tends the church garden and grounds. She is a volunteer and member of the parish. I was hoping they would respond, but have not seen the message yet but last time I walked by it was still like that.
