Nope, not just a fish tale.

My apologies to the folks who subscribe to this blog via e-mail or another means, as they will receive this post twice today. I am having problems once again with a post not showing up in Reader. The WordPress Happiness Engineers tried clearing the cache at their end, but this post which I published at 8:00 a.m. today is still not showing up in Reader.

WALKIN', WRITIN', WIT & WHIMSY

It is the Lenten season; it is Friday … and for sure we need a diversion, so I am offering up this catch-of-the-day fish tale for my post-of-the-day.

This trek actually happened last Friday, March 27th. I ventured out after it had rained from Thursday afternoon, throughout the night, stopping just short of dawn. It was dreary, drab, dull and damp- how’s that for a description? It looked as if it would pour raining any minute, as dark clouds were brooding overhead.

I got to Council Point Park, opened up my bag of peanuts and looked for my furry and feathered friends as no one came over to see me. Even the smell of fresh peanuts wafting out of the bag did not entice any peanut participants, so I ambled along the perimeter path, alone on the asphalt and alone in my thoughts.

The perimeter path is about ten feet…

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

I didn’t see it this morning but this one showed up in my WP reader. Dreary, drab, dull and damp described a lot of last spring if I remember correctly all the rest of the time I think it was raining.

Yes, it didn’t post this morning for some reason. I contacted WP but they don’t know what is wrong, but I thought I’d try again – it has happened four times since December. Yes, last Spring and the Spring before … lots of rain. I heard Lake Erie Metropark is already flooded on the trails, both dirt trails and cement trails.

It finally did appear but 10 hours after I published it, so for people scrolling through Reader, unless they are really behind like me (and you occasionally), they would miss it. I did a Wordless Wednesday – just published it to go off tomorrow morning at 5:00 – hopefully it goes off correctly.

Did they say why that has happened twice to you?

No, they thought maybe I needed to clean the browser cache – have you done that before? I thought I remember someone doing that and had problems? She suggested trying one more thing and that was to do a “forced refresh” – they do a refresh at their end to try to “populate the post into Reader” – I said I had done F5 to refresh at my end and she said to do Control F5 and it will do more good. She did not know, however, a woman blogger followed me the other day and saw my problem with the post not going to Reader and says the same thing happens to her sometimes. She asks what they told me – I guess I am not alone. But no one in the group of bloggers I follow has ever had the problem before.

Linda I don’t even know what a forced refresh is. I sometimes will clean my browser cache, it gets rid of all the tracked cookies etc, but then you have to reenter all your websites which come up automatically like facebook etc which gets annoying so I don’t empty it very often, but AOL would sometimes direct me to do it if I was having problems mostly with the speed of the computer.

See, I thought there were issues about that as well if you cleared your cache. I just did refresh, F5, then WordPress told me last week to do “Control F5” and it works better. So I’ll try that next time. I have the published post which did properly appear in Reader this morning. I am going out to see if there is any damage … hopefully not. We had a lot of rain and some hail, but not as big of hail as they showed in other areas – at least I don’t think so. Out I go to survey damage.

I have had trouble with scheduled posts showing up late and way way down in the reader. I read with interest your problem with the reader. Can I ask if you are on a paid wordpress plan? Do you schedule posts? Did they say what the problem was?

Hi Forestwood/Amanda – First, thank you for following my blog. 🙂

I am on a paid WordPress subscription plan – regular not business ($99.00/year).

I usually do schedule my posts, doing them the night before or on the weekend when I have more time … rarely do I do it on the spot. That last post I did do on the spot however. I was proofreading the nite before – fell asleep so wanted to proof it again.

Word Press says pre-scheduling has nothing to do with it. Also, I am on the block editor – they say that has nothing to do with it. Lastly, I work from home – we have not transitioned to Windows 10 yet, and I am using a Windows 7 laptop – WordPress says that has nothing to do with it.

When I contact them, they say they have to refresh my blog at their end – it has worked before, and the post does appear in Reader a short time later – last Friday, if it is because they are short staffed due to C-virus or not, I am not sure. I posted at 8:00 a.m., wrote them about 8:10 a.m. and it did not show up until 6:00 p.m. that day I finally ended up just re-blogging the post as I knew when it eventually posted, it would be at the bottom of Reader and likely not seen. I wanted it to publish on Friday as I referenced the Lenten season, Friday fish etc. This last time, the Happiness Engineer suggested that I do more than just try to refresh my site by doing F5 (I told them I kept doing that) – they suggested I do a “hard refresh” which is Control F5. They also suggested I clear my browser’s cache – that I have not done yet … I will do that next time. I will give you the link on how to do that they sent me.

I’d say 99% of the time they post fine and go to Reader – yes, when they don’t go to Reader, it is annoying – I follow myself so I know if they went to Reader or not. Several followers subscribe via e-mail or another means (one has Feedly – not sure what that is), so they get/got the posts. Here is what they sent to me – I decided to send the entire last message to me – I hope it helps you out. Let me know if you learn anything different please – life has enough annoyances and when our labor of love is stuck in cyberspace, it is annoying!
      ***********************************************
I’ve checked for you and can see that your post is definitely appearing in Reader now.

It’s possible that your browser is storing an older version of the web page locally on your computer instead of loading the latest version. The next time you make a post that doesn’t appear in Reader immediately, could you please try a force refresh? To do this hold down the CTRL key while pressing the F5 key.

A force refresh is different to a regular F5 refresh as it will cause the browser to re-check with the web server to make sure it has the latest copy of the web page you are viewing.

If you’re continuing to experience this problem, it would be worthwhile to take a look the article about troubleshooting browser issues here: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/

If you need any more assistance with this, please don’t hesitate to reply to this email, or reach us at https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

      Have a great day!

      Regards,

I shall try this tomorrow. Many thanks for taking the time to send that information to me.
I can say that schedulsescheduleometimes present problems. Sometimes they appear in the reader but way way down. Some bloggers refused to use them for that reason. Tis a shame because it’s quite a handy feature. I find my posts are sometimes way down in the reader. I shall clear my cache.

You are so welcome Amanda – I hope this does the trick for you. I just scheduled something for Wordless Wednesday. WordPress has tweaked the block editor in the last few weeks. Sometimes (well most of the time), my posts are picture laden and I was doing last Monday’s post with many shots of seagulls. I intended to put captions beneath each of the photos – the text was going vertically instead of horizontally,. Switched browsers – still happening. I figured they were short-staffed and did not contact them – a minor thing as I didn’t absolutely need to do captions, but a wee bit annoying. The posts that appear in the original order and people have missed them is annoying and I feel a little narcissistic if I say to some of the bloggers who always follow/comment: “hey, I did this – want to look at it – it wasn’t there earlier!” I guess it is one of life’s minor annoyances compared to the days we have now with this pandemic. If I hear any other tips, I’ll be sure to pass them along.

Yes, I saw they changed thr block editor. Did yo see your scheduled post okay in the reader? It just seems the date you write the post doesn’t always get overwritten with the the actual date you want it scheduled for, perhaps? And yes I tried your tip. I hope it works.
Thanks for paying along any more. It is great to share problem solving tips.

You’re welcome – we have a bad storm, and am about to shut down. Going to give you a link that was in Reader last week. I’ve looked at it but before I do another post (except I did tomorrow morning’s which is Wordless Wednesday), I need to review it more thoroughly. No, my post went to the bottom of the queue and in Reader reflected what time it was actually published. No problem – happy to pass along any tips. This was the link about the new features: https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/25823/posts/2639997805

Fantastic post! I enjoyed reading this and felt myself along on the walk. The pictures are wonderful and the shot of the fisherman standing on the rock is really expressive. Thanks for the trip away from the current crisis. Stay safe.

Thank you Ron. Glad to give you a peaceful moment from our current worries. You know it is funny, as I often walk along the Detroit Riverfront where the fisherman are lined up, elbow to elbow, while fishing. They generally make a day of it. But as happy as those other fisherman are when they land a big fish, I never felt the excitement like I did for this young guy. And the other walker, also a stranger, got caught up in his excitement. He looked a little wistful, didn’t he, as he watched his fish get out of Dodge?! You stay safe as well Ron.
