About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.     Such fun photos Linda, the first one looks like the squirrel has extreme shaggy pants on and the Cardinal, the peanut looks almost to big for him to carry. I love seeing the red winged looking at it. I did not know they would come in for food like that. I only see them out in the country or down by the river. Great way to start the day.

      Thanks Sandra – I knew you’d get a kick out of this and that is one of my favorite pictures of Parker – he does look like he has shaggy pants. I’m not sure if it was the way he was sitting on the park bench or his tail. 🙂 The cardinals, jays and red-winged blackbirds all come down to the pathway to grab peanuts when the squirrels aren’t looking and I often toss them out if I see them lurking in the trees. I was looking for a prior shot of the blackbird eating a peanut and could not find one. I have tons of stuff in my media library so I went with this one and him studying the peanuts in anticipation of a “grab” … I am going to head out shortly and we have snow three days this week! We had a little this morning in the northern burbs … just grassy surfaces, but still … there was some earlier that caused some accidents. Given what snow is in the UP and the C-virus stats … stay away from Michigan for a little while longer Sandra!

        I loved the photos, we got about 4 inches of snow here last night, it will melt fast though. Have a good day today.

        Glad you did Sandra. The birds grabbing a peanut from the ground are not what you would expect. When I got home from walking there was a male cardinal on the porch … no more peanuts left. He waited til I opened the bag and put it on the porch for him, then took off with it. It started snowing just then and surprisingly we got about about an inch of snow this afternoon – most of it has melted. I think it will snow again Thursday into Friday morning.

        Since we were gone most of the winter and I wasn’t feeding the birds here. It seems they have moved to a new spot. I have not seen many in my backyard. But, they say it takes awhile for birds to get used to feeders and once they do they keep coming back. Because last year I had so many birds. New birds even that I have never heard of. So it is a slow process to start all over. But I have been feeding birds for as long as I can remember. It is such a joy to do.

        I think they probably have one “lookout bird” that looks for food and may just remember you doing that. I fed the birds for years too, but had to stop after we got rats when someone left their dog out 24/7/365 and did not clean up after it … we had rats and the pest control service said I needed to stop feeding and watering them. I always enjoyed it as well.

        I think I have mentioned this before, that is why I only put a little bit out at a time. I will attrack other critters we don’t want to have. Their is a house down the road that has dozens of feeders in her front yard. And they are ful most of the time. The problem is all the ducks waddle up to her yard to eat the seed spilling on the ground. I get nervous for the ducks being the cars sometimes go by to fast on that road.

        Oh that’s too bad with the ducks – they wouldn’t be watching for the cars at all as they’re not usually out in traffic. I would hate to see one of them killed too. There was a woman on a street I sometimes walk down – same thing and the pigeons all gravitate to the bottom under the feeders. I’ll walk by and there is a huge whoosh of wings as they head to the roof.

    That was hilarious! I remember you saying once Linda that you spent so much money on peanuts that you should be able to use your critters as tax dependents!

      Thanks Joni – yes, I should claim them for all the packages of peanuts I buy over the course of the year. I had several 7-pound bags of peanuts delivered to the house a few weeks ago. I was not out of the ones from the grocery store, but I follow the owner on Facebook, and he advertised hand delivering them or putting them in your car trunk … the owner was my former HVAC guy who bought a Wild Birds Unlimited store – they specialize in bird feeding accessories and food and they carry peanuts. He is delivering items from his store to customers since the store is closed, so I ordered the peanuts. I tried making a miniature 1040 Form to put them as Dependents on it, but it didn’t look right, so I did this instead. 🙂

      Glad that cardinal gave you a giggle Kim. Seeing him holding onto what looked like a triple peanut reminds me of the expression “go big or go home!” I think I can claim them pretty soon too.

      Yes, it would be funny to do so, wouldn’t it Laurie. I originally tried to make a miniature 1040 form. Took it from the IRS website and put “squirrels and birds and peanuts – oh my!” on one line, but there was no place for a dollar figure for which I was going to put “ouch!” But I couldn’t make a fake 1040 and it was not going to work, so did this idea instead. I did not hear one thing today about the usual/former tax date – I was a little surprised by that, but the news is 99% COVID-19 these days.

      Hi Esther – Grady is the gray squirrel in the 5th picture down. He is one of the “house squirrels” … the squirrel in the header image is Parker, who is at the Park. I may have mentioned him to you – he has a mind of his own and is very funny and if he wants to get my attention, he will jump on my shoe or try to climb up my sweatpants. That’s if he’s hungry and I’m not moving fast enough with the peanuts for him. 🙂

        Oh dear, I forgot about Parker! The name Grady stuck with me. Your squirrel friends are really comfortable with you and you are not afraid of them getting too close.
        We are not animal whisperers…admire them from afar. One time Fretz almost rain into me and all 3 of us were outside freaking out.

        They are cute Esther and they have their antics and their moments and they do get impatient when it comes to their peanuts and treats, like Parker who not only jumps on my shoes, but has climbed up my sweatpants scaling up my leg as he tries to get to the mesh bag where the peanuts are.

        I am so far behind here – it’s already near the end of Monday. We did have a good Sunday, although originally rain was forecast. I am glad I did not put away my heavyweight clothes are we have another few cold/rainy/snow showery days coming up. May should be fine to think more “Spring-y” thoughts. I will tell them hi – both Parker and Grady are very animated and know how to glean more treats – not unlike a dog. 🙂

        I am so far far behind. It’s already Wednesday night. This week has been a handful with my body running on fumes. I had some chicken soup tonight and am taking it easy. Hopefully, I’ll be back to my regular self soon.
        We’ve had inconsistent weather here too: one cold and the next day warm. I’m ready for warm weather although I say that with hesitation: CA heat is super hot and dry! Hope your weather improves and you’ll enjoy spring soon.
