I like them too Sandra and do you remember a few years ago, Governor Snyder said “the word Michiganders sounds like we are geese – let’s call us Michiganians!” I really never heard people say “Michiganians” – since we live so close to Canada, let’s use “Michiganders” is what I say. It’s like calling Upper Peninsula residents “Yoopers” and Lower Peninsula folks “trolls” – who makes these names up? I had never thought about the word to describe Iowa residents … that word does not roll off the tongue easily. I had this one picture of a Canada Goose and decided it would be fun to do this for Wordless Wednesday.

Thanks Esther – I love reflections on the water, whether landscape or waterfowl. At least this goose was well behaved; no honking or hissing as they are prone to do sometimes. 🙂

Geese by the park near our house do a lot of honking and they get s little too close when you walk by them. The goose in that picture must be of a mellower kind. And see, being mellow means you get your picture taken and talked about by the humans!

Yes, they sure do get wound up, especially when they have their goslings with them – that is going to be happening soon. I just saw a photo tonight on Twitter at a park in Michigan of goslings making their debut. Very cute. Yes, that goose was photogenic – didn’t move a muscle – did he?

Yes, and I did see goslings yesterday morning at the Park. They were very tiny and were swimming behind their parents – so cute. After I just said I’d not seen any.

BTW, your gosling sighting sounds so cute! Little fuzzballs on the water. My dad borrowed tiny chicks and ducks for my kids to play with when they visited their farm last year.

I did not finish in Reader unfortunately and I think that is since more people are working from home or laid off, so writing more – it is impossible to keep up. I am hoping to get a walk in this morning. It is gray and overcast and I think has finally stopped raining. I bought rubber boots last year and wore them a few times to the bigger parks, as they are good for walking on squishy glass, but not too good for walking in general, but better if you try to get some steps in … I walked 1,300 miles last year, and since you just followed me recently I may not have mentioned or you may not have seen a post where I post my miles to date. I try to beat that goal every year … I hope the weather and/or the pandemic does not wreak havoc with this goal.

1,300 miles?! That is fabulous. Yes, I did not know you posted miles. That is a very cool goal to achieve and you get health benefits at the same time! I will check that out. I’m wondering if I should invest in a fitbit to count my steps. My kids both got one for their birthdays, and it might motivate me too.
My neighbor runs and she has ran serious miles.
There is so much time spent at home that it may be people are spending more time on WordPress. It is impossible to keep up with everyone although you want to. I’m a good speed reader…so much practice from years of graduate school. That helps a bit.
I was thinking about getting rubber boots, but our rain is so random and little in CA. I just couldn’t justify the purchase, but there are some really cute ones out there.

I have read posts by bloggers who walk and they love their FitBits – one blogger said her husband’s would register a different total of steps than hers though they walked together. It would be a nice purchase to keep track of steps and aim for that 10,000 steps that Michelle Obama tried to encourage people to do – five miles per day, then you could see how much you walk around the house too. I do not have a FitBit, just a pedometer and I have a small house, so nowhere to bulk up steps. Some phones will keep track of your steps – maybe there is an app on yours for that. Speed reading is good – it would be difficult to get through grad school reading everything that you had to.

Learning something new…it was Michelle Obama who initiated the 10,000 step challenge! People keep mentioning that amount of steps and I just never questioned who started it or how many miles it was.
I used to use my phone as a pedometer but it’s hard because I have to hold it as I walk or put in my back pocket. My hands are busy with kids, holding their things, my coffee, keys, what not. etc. True, wearing one would help me see how much I do walk around. hmmmm, shopping!! lol. If I get one, I’ll let you know.
Grad school reading was so much that all I did was read and read. That stress was overwhelming. Use to have vomiting fits during paper writing stretches. I survived it and remembering them has helped me endure hardships as a mom and person.

I think it was put in place in conjunction with the “Let’s Move” campaign which was started for kids to be healthier. I believe that there were pedometers handed out to kids to help them walk more steps, and that was in conjunction with the food being healthier for kids at school cafeterias too. She was promoting 10,000 steps a day or 5 miles for everyone. I can rack up a lot of miles going to the grocery store and when I go to the Park, if I walk to/from the Park it is two miles roundtrip and each loop is a mile so I can keep track of my mileage easily as I go the same way everyday. If I drive there, it is two less miles, but I make it up at the Park. Unfortunately the Park was closed today as too many groups were gathering there – it is closed indefinitely and I am not happy about it to be honest. I did take some pictures there and enjoyed the ambiance – first time I’ve taken pictures in a month at the Park or neighborhood. That’s a great campaign! Exercise and better school food. I wonder if it’s still ongoing. A lot of schools, I’ve heard, grow their own vegetables and kids cook with it.
Your walks sound lovely! It’s more motivating to walk if you have a destination like going to the market or park. Where I live it’s not very pedestrian friendly. You have to compete with cars.

When I was in grad school, I lived in a weird world of just my books. After graduation it was hard to adjust and to outside the comfort zone of school. You get used to something and then it’s so hard to readjust. So is life!

You’re welcome for the link Esther. I know, being in school is kind of like being in a bubble, then all of a sudden it is done … you have a lot of spare time on your hands. I had to read so many books during my college years and it seemed I had to write book reports on the same books all the time and it took me a long time to be able to sit down and just enjoy a book without wondering why the characters did this or that and why? I thought I’d read over the Winter and got some books, but we had a mild Winter so I was able to walk a lot more than anticipated and it seems if I am not walking, I am working on the blog in some form or another. Today we had 75 degrees – it was above normal temps and tomorrow we will have below normal temps!

Yes, I agree. School life is kind of like a bubble existence that you get used to. I couldn’t wait to be done, but once I did, I felt aimless. It was definitely a learning process!
I have stacks of books I want to read too. The one I’m reading now is Praise of Idleness by Bertrand Russell. Short essay but a good forward and afterwords by the comedic writer…can’t remember his name now. Anything that you want to read soon?

I have to go through my stack I bought Esther as I’ve not read now since New Year’s Day or maybe finished up the book on the first weekend thereafter. I bought a small book called “Catching Murphy” and had to order it online from Amazon as it was published by the Associated Press and not available in bookstores. It is a story of a golden retriever named Murphy who goes missing and a town that unites to find him.

Interestingly, I do like dogs and they are not similar, but I think I’d read them next – I also bought a few murder mysteries. A fellow blogger writes a feature in her blog called “the Literary Salon” and spotlights a different book monthly. I bought a few based on her recommendation. I don’t know why I can’t just sit down and read like I used to – I used to love to read – the blogging seems to take up all my time on the weekend with walks, sorting pictures and writing posts.

You should read when you feel like it! It’s supposed to be a pleasurable thing to take your mind off things. I went through a period like and it seems the love of reading comes in waves. I am total OCD when it comes to reading, so if I get into it, I can’t stop. I read “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck and was enamored by the characters and the psychological analysis. Wow! What a book. My kids, on the other hand, felt otherwise. lol.

I really enjoyed reading when I was younger and took the bus so I had plenty of time to read. Now it seems the weekends jump by so fast. I only read those books on the long holidays but really enjoyed them. I tried Nicholas Sparks’ new book “Every Breath”, as I’d never read a book by him and I always heard good things about his books, mostly like you said – you can’t put the book down. I enjoyed it though I went on Good Reads afterward to see what others said and they said it was not his usual type of book and they were disappointed. Here is Joni’s site and she has a special section devoted to her “literary salon” and it goes in reverse chronological order. I did buy one book based on her review of a “beach read” last Summer.

The weekends go fast but so does the week. I am always amazed when Thursday night rolls around.
I enjoy reading too and had more fun with it when I had less responsibilities. lol. Reading is a luxury now. I read Sparks’ book “The Notebook” and saw the movie; cried like crazy. Huh, interesting about the reviews. I don’t know what “Every Breath” is about.

My new book right now…shoot, can’t remember the title…but it’s about glorifying God through the mundane tasks of a stay-at-home mom. It is very mundane and repetitive but I struggle with it too.

Yes, I wish I could factor more reading into my day and especially the weekend. I even wanted to get into sketching after I took a “walk and sketch” interpretive tour last Summer. The weatherman said we’d have a snowy Winter so I figured I’d have plenty of time to read, get into sketching again (I did it many decades ago) and sort thru all my pictures from last year – some are almost a year old … we had a nice Winter so I went out walking more. I heard “The Notebook” movie and book was good. You will like Joni’s site – she writes on many topics, but has that literary salon as a recurring theme.

Do you happen to be on Twitter Esther? I am only on there to follow the weather or trending news stories and some bird photographers. There is a woman bird photographer who takes pictures of birds feeding out of her hand and she posts the videos on Twitter daily – they are enjoyable. She also posts some pictures of them on YouTube – this one was from today on YouTube, but her Twitter feed includes many videos and still shots at a park about 20 miles from where I live.

I have not been back to my Instagram account in ages. I just logged on to find my name – it is “Walkin- Woman @walk_on_1956” and my Twitter handle is “Walkin’ Woman @oldshoeleather”. As to Instagram, I don’t have a smartphone, so I never post photos from it and I only was following the two places. For Twitter, I follow news, weather, some nature sites and a handful of photographers so I am on Twitter more often. She says that the birds are mostly in one area and people have been feeding them for years, so they are very comfortable in perching on an outstretched palm and taking treats. I always look forward to seeing them Diane and usually I am able to find the first fuzzy goslings just in time to make a post during Mother’s Day week. Mother’s Day is May 10th this year and I will likely be looking at old pictures. I have a lot of pictures that I have held back from prior posts the last few years as they looked like duplicates or there were just too many pictures in an already-long post. I may be digging those out.
Maybe the moms are still sitting on the eggs, trying to incubate them with this downright cold weather we’ve been having. We are going to have cold weather til the end of the month and into next weekend.

I looked all over today for geese sitting on nests and didn’t see a single one. I follow a photographer on Twitter and she posted her first goslings at Kensington Metropark … it is about 20 miles from me. I have never seen the eaglets but I have followed Bella the Hummingbird and her babies on explore.org many times. I was watching one night and she was sitting on eggs and had flown away – a little while later, I looked at the camera and three chicks were there, and had just broken out of the shell. 🙂

I love hummingbirds and we get any every year but I have yet to find a nest. We have a lot of large evergreen trees on our property and I am guessing they hide in there. All the other birds disappear in them as well. I will check out explore.com!

My neighbor had lots of hummingbird feeders around her house and watched them all day long, but if I went out in the morning on my walk, they were never out. I found this site and the hummingbirds for my neighbor – she watched them all Winter – there are three hummers there. They have other web cams – go to their home page – they were advertising a baby condor when I got you this hummer site:

I saw that eagle cam of the Decorah eagles, but spent more time watching the eagle and her eaglets in California yesterday. I saw the mom perched on a rock sleeping and very close to the edge. I wanted to tell her to scoot over a little. I like that site – there is much to see and now especially with all the “youngsters”. 🙂

They are Diane. A couple of months ago seeing the new hummingbirds, freshly hatched was a real treat. Their eggs are the size of Tic Tacs – just imagine that!

Maybe this weekend as it is so warm, they will arrive, and then they’ll go South again because next week will be very cold. For us anyway, but you are so similar to us – we may have frost next week after getting to 72 tomorrow!.

I didn’t want to say that it was getting cold, as I thought it was just here in Michigan, but our states are so close and today was above normal; tomorrow 20 days lower and below normal. Crazy!

The weather was really warm and in northern Michigan they say it might snow at the end of the week! In Ohio, do they say “in Ohio, if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes” like we say here? The grandkids are having a ball living with their grandmother.

Things here have been pretty quiet. My daughter and I have decided the kids will go home from Monday until Thursday night. Then we will have them from Thursday night through Monday. They have a new house they have only slept at twice and are missing their mom and pets. My daughter said the hospital isn’t even enforcing they wear masks, it’s up to them. However, the moment things get worse she will bring them back. Fingers crossed we aren’t making a mistake!

That’s good that things are quiet there now – we are the next state over – how can things be so bad here? I am happy for you as your family is immersed in the healthcare industry. That is great they can go home – you had not mentioned pets before – yes, good and amazing they are not enforcing the use of masks. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that everything goes well.
