About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Glad you liked them Ellie. I was going to use the “Never Dull Your Sparkle” rock up top, but the pink in “Sparkle” kind of faded into the background, so used a heart instead – a heart always works for “sharing the love” … these are kids painting the rocks and you can just take one if you want and that was what I learned from the mailman who was delivering the mail at this house when I was standing there taking pictures. It is the homeowners’ grandchildren who are so creative.

      Do you have the painted rock craze there where you live Bindya? It has been going strong for three years here. The artwork for the rocks is by the homeowners’ grandchildren who paint the rocks and leave them for passersby to take with them.

        No Linda but I remember I used to paint empty eggshells and cap them on to plant stalks,when I was a child 🙂.Those kids hv done good work by painting rocks well wishes.they are beautiful!

        Oh, that would be very delicate work … you would worry that animals in the garden, even birds, would break those delicate shells. I thought those rocks were done well too Bindya – a few years ago when the rock painting was at its height, there was a local woman who painted images of an entire person on a small rock, like a bride looking at herself in a hand mirror for example, or a profile of a beautiful woman. She did gorgeous work.

        They sure are – I would like to be that creative! That takes lots of patience to paint on that small of a “canvas”.

      I thought so too Sandra – it is the homeowners grandkids painting the rocks and putting them out for people to take. I was chatting with the mailman who filled me in on that story.

    Never dull your sparkle. Now those are words to live by. These rocks are exceptionally well done. I walk by some under a neighbor’s mailbox that are cute, but not as perfect as these.

      Yes, that was a new expression for me. I thought these were well done too Ally. Back at the height of the painted rock craze, there were some beauties and one woman did miniature landscape scenes as well as pictures of people in profile.

      Yes, out by the pond Diane. to showcase them and see them from your window.
      Are the grandkids still with you or home with Mom now at night and days off? There are recommendations for the best paints and finishes to use for them. I remember from before that you can usually go to the landscape supply store to river rock and Michael’s carries the paints that adhere better and Mod Podge for finishing them off with a little luster. This site will tell you some basics and if you’re on Pinterest, they have lots of ideas. I just took a quick look.

        Thank you for the link Linda! The kids went home about a week ago. Our new schedule is they come here Thursday night and leave Monday morning. This is providing we don’t get an increase in covid patients. My daughter was tested and is negative so she is doing a great job protecting herself. Our veterans home was hit with the virus so the beds are filling up again. Enjoying the few days of quiet for now…lol

        You’re welcome Diane – once school is out for good, it might be a fun option to do with the grandkids and could be a post like you did with your wisteria and your pond/birds at the birdfeeders. You are getting a well-deserved break Diane. That was two months you took care of them seven days a week. Glad to hear that your daughter has tested negative – hope the rest of your family all working in the medical field are also faring well.

      Yes once things get a little warmer, I am sure there will be more rock painting and hiding. It’s a good activity to paint in all this rainy weather and you’re forced to be indoors.

      I hope you can do more of those flags with the white stones and red, white and blue flags for the 4th of July. This is on Emmons Boulevard just before the footbridge.

      I agree Margy. These were young kids did these rocks – very impressive as I’ve seen adults paint rocks that aren’t half that good (that would likely include me too). Our Governor here in Michigan has loosened the restrictions a little today – we are now allowed to have ten people in a group effective tomorrow – I am sure that was since it is our long holiday weekend. PM Trudeau asked that the border closure be extended to June 21st except essential workers and truckers transporting freight.

      No, I have not done that to date. I actually started my blog in February 2013 and had a few friends following by e-mail until November 2017 when someone “discovered” my blog here on WP. He followed me and commented and I was amazed … someone from within! Things have taken off and I have really enjoyed the journey since then!

    These rocks are so colourful and cheerful. Since the lockdown began in the UK, children have been making colourful rainbow pictures as a thank you to health and other key workers.☺️

      That’s a nice idea for the kids to do Clare. I think it takes the kids’ minds off of the worries they see these days with their parents fretting over lost jobs and/or working from home and maybe lost income. Kids are likely having some angst even if they are young. Like the rocks, it sure helps to lighten the mood. 🙂
