About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       You are welcome Susie – sorry I didn’t send the link to you. I do the posts in advance to publish at 5:00 a.m. – you beat me this morning (again). I set my alarm for later as we were supposed to have severe weather overnight and this morning. I am glad to hear that you will be released from quarantine tomorrow Susie … things will now be a “new normal” for you and your husband … your birthday in 17 days will be the best in several years.

      Yes they sure are Sandra. There were several sidewalk portions with another message, but the shade from the trees made the message too difficult to read so I could use that message. As it was, this message was kind of dark too from the shade. A timely message for sure so I put it up top. The severe weather did not occur here but it is already in the 70s and very humid. I set my alarm later as I assumed I was not going out but hunkering down given the weather predictions. Going to see if I can still walk, maybe just in the neighborhood, depending if thunder/lightning is expected shortly or not. Did you get any severe weather up there?

      Timely for sure Ruth. How did you fare with the severe weather last night? We were not slammed here but I heard there are some power outages and downed trees but not in Wayne County … hope you were okay. It is already in the 70s – just like an August day.

    You are welcome Laurie – since you and I grew up in an era of the peace symbol and the two-finger peace sign, I was surprised to see this young girl had incorporated them into her chalk drawing. She had another message which stretched over several cement sidewalk portions, but it was under a tree and the dappled shade made the picture too dark to use. Thank you again for your concern over what happened to me while I was absent from WordPress for three days … I have never been gone that long before and I appreciate it.

    Good signs. I often say “bloom where you’re planted.” I especially like that sign! Stay safe, huh?

      Thanks Ally. I collected photos over the last month. That “bloom where you’re planted” was at my neighbor’s house. They are two wooden planters for flowers and she has not filled them yet. They had a wire on top with a gingham ribbon. Thanks – I’ll stay safe, but coincidentally we are having a protest in my City tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. They are marching from the police department up a busy street to the next city’s police department. The police were tipped off and will work with the protesters … this is a little over a mile away from me.

    Does that mean everything is now open again Linda? or just some things? I think they just extended ours til the end of June, but that is because Toronto has so many cases and climbing. Our local parks were never closed.

      Hi Joni – no, the hairdressers/barber shops, exercise places and tattoo parlors are not open yet. Governor said maybe next week for them.

        Our lockdown is not exteneded til the end of June and no other announcements in sight, as cases in Toronto are still high, around 400/day, it’s plateaued but not coming down the way they want it, although deaths are less. Ford is talking about maybe letting the rural areas or less impacted areas open first, so I hope that’s us. Hard to tell how much it’s around when they do so little testing, and now with all the protesters in the streets, (here too), they are expecting it to increase in a week or two.

        They are watching closely here for a spike, not only for relaxing the rules, but with the protesting as they were close together and unmasked. It would not surprise me either to see the stats rise.

      Ann Marie – I thought of you when I prepared this post as you had told me about all the white ribbons on the trees all along Biddle Avenue. I went to see them after you told me. I was going to return to the hospital area to take a photo of the big ribbon on the front of the building for this post, but decided to just use these pics since we are now out of lockdown (for the most part anyway). The day I went to BASF Park, I saw it, but there were lots of cars, so I could not stop for a picture. Yes, I think they were/are still essential. I believe we would not have gotten through this pandemic without them. I know how you feel as you thanked them with a sign that you sent me the picture of.

      Thanks Diane – I figured you’d like seeing the support for our healthcare workers since your family is so involved in this occupation. The ribbons along the street for Beaumont Hospital in Wyandotte are spectacular to see … at least a mile, if not longer and it is a street that is lined with trees on both sides. Ribbons, all white, same height from the ground leading up to this hospital. My friend Ann Marie’s husband was in this hospital a total of six weeks this year, the last time with COVID-19, which was discovered by a home health aid while checking him at home after fluid was removed from his heart – he also has advanced COPD. So during the last stay for COVID-19, Ann Marie left a big sign for the workers … she could not see her husband for two weeks and was quarantined herself (she was okay) … on the last day, she left the sign. She texted me the photo, but I did not use it here. I hope things are improving for your daughter – I hope that the cases don’t shoot up from the gatherings.
