About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       They are all about nuts – tomorrow I may get attacked since I didn’t walk this morning. They didn’t predict the severe weather until late afternoon, but there was a chance of a stray shower. It was oppressive (80F/26 C) at 7:00 a.m. and really humid. I wanted to do the slideshow and do a few things outside so took today off.

      Yes we are Sandra – it was the first time for just squirrels in a long time. I will check your post out. I never got to Reader last night. I think the storms have now passed … so thankful for that.

      Hello BE KITSCHIG – I just fished your comment out of SPAM (hmm). These are Fox squirrels. They are large compared to the photos of red squirrels with the furry ears that I see. We also have black squirrels and gray squirrels and they are much smaller than the Fox squirrels. They’ve lost some of their Winter fat layer and heavier fur (and likewise our Park was closed for a month and no one feeding them peanuts so they have lost a few ounces). 🙂

        Good morning BE KITSCHIG … I have had a ton of SPAM as well the last month or so and it mostly the same and some seems like it is a couple of pages long. And when it is a legitimate comment like yours, I never understand how it lands there? You enjoy your day and stay safe too.

      Thanks Joni – on May 1st when the Park closed, it was a sea of dandelions. They had time to flourish, turn to seed and die off. Now it is the clover – it’s everywhere and the bunnies love it! I think the squirrels were happy too. Life suddenly became easier for them and you have to wonder what their mindset was as to where everyone was for that month?

      Yes, they’d be even skinnier than they are now Laurie! I think they lost some of their fat layer and heavier fur that made them so chubby looking all Winter, so now it’s time to treat them like little princes again. Good thing I resurfaced, as well as the other walkers who hand out peanuts, because if they ate all the clover, there would be none left for the bunnies – now the bunnies come out to eat all the clover – the grass cutters have not been there in about ten days so there is clover all over. When you were a kid, did you pick clover and chew on the inside part which tasted like honey? We did – lived to tell about it too. Wouldn’t do that now with all the pesticides!

      They are happy and I am happy Ann Marie … I am still looking for the Cardinals to return though … the jays and Red-Winged Blackbirds are back to scamming peanuts. The bunnies are fond of munching on clover this time of year too. Thank goodness the cool weather is back – that heat wave was not enjoyable, nor were the storms!

    I grow and eat Crimson Clover sprouts, among other types — and i’ve been sprouting for decades — and, wow, are they nutritious and delicious! I use an “Easy Sprouter”… they are wonderful patented sprouters that use the natural heat convection from sprouts to naturally circulate the container air and humidity. Super easy to use!!!! 🙂

      Those Crimson Clover sprouts were a bright green and very lush looking. The clover, both white and pink, was gone today. The grass cutters mowed yesterday and it’s gone, as are the bunnies, for now.

      Yes Diane, they’ve been little angels in the 10 days since I’ve been back. One time Parker jumped on my foot while I was trying to take a picture – going to write about that next week. Today I was talking to Carol, (who’ve I mentioned before walking with her husband Arnie). We were stopped and talking and she feeds the squirrels too. A squirrel kept begging, first to her, then to me. We kept talking, and each of us would toss out a peanut every few minutes. We watched him out of the corner of our eye and noticed he ate each one – he must have gone through a dozen peanuts in 15 minutes’ time. No running off with them, just eating them on the spot. I think they went so long without peanuts in their diet that they can’t get enough now.

        It is Diane – things are about back to normal, though the Cardinals have still not shown up and they were regular peanut eaters on the pathway.
        I’m getting a few birds, (mostly Jays and Red-Winged Blackbirds), but not like before … I don’t know if they forgot or maybe there is more to forage these days. The squirrels did not forget. 🙂

      It is fun to interact with the squirrels too Esther. Those are not the best photos that I’ve taken of squirrels … sometimes they sit high in a tree and will pose, or pose with a cookie, which I give them occasionally. That is fun. I do think they appreciate their treats and now that the Park is open again, they look for their treats and benefactors. Also, in the last post, I forgot to thank you for your comment on the duck photos. It was fun watching them in the water … it made me smile.

        Those squirrels must’ve missed their treats and benefactors! They probably were feeling the effects of COVID_19. A picture of a squirrel holding a cookie should be very funny. Does Parker know he’s famous on your blog?

        I was keeping up pretty well Esther and then the two weekends after Memorial Day I worked outside a lot, so started getting behind. I will try my best, but maybe behind, especially Mondays. I was gone most of this last weekend walking, taking photos – I decided it would be a “me weekend” after all that hard work outside.
        My favorite picture of Parker was last Valentine’s Day. I have featured him so many times, he must know and a couple of times I had him “guest-write” a blog post.         Omg, wouldn’t it be a great post if Parker guest blogged?! Maybe you could pretend to write it from his perspective. Funny, funny!
        We all need a “me” weekend and time to unwind and disconnect from media. Hope that time was rejuvenating!
