About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       We have them in some Parks and some cities – this one happens to be in the historical village at Heritage Park. It is a fun idea and people just go and take what they want to read or leave books for others.

      I miss your frequent posts Mia, especially salivating over your Tuesday posts. 🙂 Whenever Anne Mehrling does a post about waterfalls, I think of your post that we discussed with you hiking there. I am well, trying to stay safe in these crazy times and worrying about the news about the spike in cases, not only here in Michigan but everywhere – sigh. At least you can consider yourselves blessed if that illness that ran through your family around the holidays was indeed the Coronavirus as you mentioned it might be. I hate the upside-down nature of our lives these days. Take care!

        Yes, I need to get back to posting much more regularly. Since, the shutdowns, it seems our lives sped up quite a bit rather than slowed down with everyone else’s. 😂 I am starting to get back in the swing of writing more. You are inspiring me to do so! 😊💕 I have thought of you often and kept you in my prayers. I pray you face it all with courage and not fear. I have found so many news sources seem to just broadcast what brings the most anxiety and crisis; so, I hardly watch anymore. Glean from several sources just to get the truth that I can and let all the rest fall off by the wayside. I’ve found much more peace that way. 😉 Praying you stay safe and strong. Blessings! 💗

        You always make me feel better with your kind words Mia. I try not to be fearful and I admit to listening to the news too much and reading social media to get all my info. In part, that is because I don’t have TV, having cancelled my cable many years ago. I was feeling a little more confident about venturing out and things were rosier here in Michigan, then across the U.S. and in Michigan, cases are starting to spike again. Well that is a shame and a little scary as well. There will be much happiness when a vaccine is out of the trial phase and ready to go. We’ll all breathe a collective sigh of relief. I’m glad you’ll be writing more as your posts are always inspirational and I miss the food posts as well. Take care. Mia.

        Yeah, the numbers are spiking mainly because there are more tests available and more accurate. 😉 I have concluded this virus is just another virus we will add to the “flu season repertoire,” and we just have to be resilient and aware, just as we are when flu numbers rise. The media has learned where their “bread is buttered”, whatever they can do to create a crisis, they will “illustrate it.” But I have decided, as a Christian, I will not live as the world lives. I will hold securely to 2 Tim 1:7 and trust my God will protect me. (Not naively saying I’ll never be sick or see hardship, but rather even if hardships, He is my source, my comfort and my refuge.) Hope you find yourself encouraged today. Praying for you. Thanks for all your encouragement to me and inspiration to start writing again. 💗 Blessings!

        Your belief is strong Mia and it will carry you through this COVID-19 crisis and beyond. It is true there are more tests going on now and people are weary of staying home, so becoming a little reckless too. This too shall pass and we’ve had our quiet time to reflect more on our lives.         Thanks Mia – I have tried to post consistently, and there for that month I didn’t go to the Park while it was on lockdown, I made an effort to make sure I was out and about so I would not be at a loss what to write about, although, believe it or not, I still have photos from walks taken last year to use up. Other things came up on walks and in the news, so I put them on the back burner. 💕 back at you!

        Thank you Mia – I have written a lot lately, more than usual, but it has been occasions, like Father’s Day and I started doing Wordless Wednesday and wrote about COVID-19 … more posts than usual. I even had some pictures from before the shutdown of the Park, and we had a fairly mild Winter so I got out more. I had a long trek I took to Henry and Clara Ford’s estate last year – acres and acres of flowers and roses that have been there for decades. So many pictures that I’ve looked at them, but not sorted them out to make a post – maybe two posts. It is hard to keep up with all the posts – in fact, a few months ago, I decided I was not going to do posts on the weekend as I was getting nothing done in the house anymore. I appreciate each time you visit and comment. Thank you for your kind words.

    Our Little Free Libraries are all shut down. I live equidistance to three of them and enjoy leaving books in them, but no more can do that. Another new normal, I guess.

      Oh that’s a real shame Ally. I don’t have any close by me – this one is located in the historical village at Heritage Park. At least people can go and get or take books here. I believe our libraries are still on a curbside pickup right now. There are too many new normals these days. We were to move to a new phase by the end of June, but the Governor said that likely won’t happen due to the sudden spike of cases/deaths not only in Michigan but nationwide.

    we have one of those here.Because of all the rain we get they put a light bulb in there so as to keep the moisture out. Like a fridge but the light stays on.

      That’s interesting how they combat all the dampness to salvage the books. Yes, I guess the moisture would build up inside and cause the books to smell musty. This “Little Free Library” is located in the historical area at Heritage Park.

        That’s really clever – did that free library look like this one Wayne? I was Googling around last night and learned they are all over the world and it showed some pictures. You can have any design and some people made theirs to look just like their home – very creative. I learned there is a free library 1/2 mile from me and I went and looked for it on the way to the Park this morning. Going to take a few books over there.

        I found out by looking on that site I sent you that there was one just about 8-10 blocks from my house, so I went to see it today. I think it is a great idea and this one was jam-packed with books, probably due to people having more downtime during the COVID-19 lockdown.

        Thanks Ellie … you know, you can get the Free Little Library somewhere else beside your house – this Little Library is at Heritage Park and they just got permission to put it there. It had a little story of the location, owner for each library. Maybe you could find an organization that would even sponsor it to be built/certified and you could fill it with your books. I think it would be fun. I’ll have more books once I retire and get more time to read. I was an avid reader as I took the bus for years. Now that I’ve been working from home since 2011, so no bus ride, plus walking and blogging has kept me from reading like I once did. I just learned from that link I sent you, that there is a Little Free Library about 1/2 mile from me. The parents put it there in memory of their daughter Madalyn whom they lost to brain cancer in 2010 at 8 1/2 years old.

        Yes, this way you don’t have to put it on your parents’home/lawn and an organization might be grateful to have it there – encouraging anyone to read is a good thing.

      It is a nice thing as people drop off books and take books to read and no fee, just go over and grab a book.

      I wonder too Diane. I just learned from Googling around after writing the post, that we have one just 1/2 mile from me. I never knew it was there – I had no idea there are free libraries like this all around the world. It’s a great idea and I’d wonder the same thing Diane since it is on the honor system.

    That’s one smart bird. I love those little free libraries. I donate all my extra books to them after I am done with them. Such a nice thing for people to do to maintain them!

      Yes, but that robin scoffed at “The Thorn Birds” as it was a love story; silly bird was looking for the “Audubon Field Guide”. 🙂 I loved “The Thorn Birds” book and movie.

      That Little Free Library was at Heritage Park. I never noticed it before, so don’t know if it was new or I never saw it. But last night I Googled around to find if there are any other free libraries and discovered one about 1/2 mile from my house. The family dedicated it to their daughter who had pediatric brain cancer and died in 2010, but loved books – so sad. I bought books for over the Winter 2019-2020 though I have a big tub of paperbacks downstairs (for retirement). I read three of those books, so I’m going to take them there. I used to donate my books to the Lincoln Park Library,; they sold duplicates at a used book sale. I’d rather donate to this cause. I think it is good now as our libraries were closed a long time and I think they are letting you borrow by calling ahead and driving up to retrieve your book. This is much nicer.

      Pam – I thought it was the cutest thing and because a follower from the UK said she was going to reblog that post, I looked around for some info for her on the free libraries. I discovered they are worldwide and didn’t know that fact. I also didn’t know there was a map of all the certified free libraries and discovered one just about 5-6 blocks from me so I took a few books to her.
