About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Thanks Jeanine – who knew I had so much to say? My goal is 2,020 kilometers (1,255 miles) this year … 2,020 km. chosen for the year … a year, we might want to just pretend didn’t exist on so many levels.

        It’s all good until late October … then there are later sunrises, slick leaves and black ice on sidewalks or the Park perimeter path. I don’t mind walking in snow, but ice not so much. I always set a yearly goal and upped it more this year to get to “2020” kilometers. I have had years where we had so much snow in December, that to meet my goal I have walked laps in the snow at a park with no sidewalks/paths or at a salted and plowed church parking lot that is fairly close to my house. Last year we had our first minor snowfall the beginning of November – my neighbor still had his Halloween pumpkins out as the squirrels like eating them.       Thank you Ellie … when I saw this plane and its contrails, I knew what I’d use the picture for and I knew you’d like it as you like contrails. You could not have found a more perfect blue sky than this so the contrails were just perfect. I am blessed to have met you as well.

      Thanks Ally. With the exception of a few torrential rain weekend days (grrrr), we’ve had a hot but sunny Summer, so it helped me bulk up the miles. Good thing since two Michigan meteorologists announced today we will have a La Nina Winter (lots of moisture, maybe snow – that they can’t pinpoint now, but most logical type of precip) – ugh. Must. Walk. More. Now.

      Thank you Ruth – well I bought two new pair of shoes last week as they were on sale, even though I had another pair waiting in the wings. They were on sale 40% off and I worry they’ll discontinue the style, so I guess that was my indulgence/treat! I’ll have to think of something special for the 1,500th blog post though.

      Thank you Zambian Lady – it was kind of an inspiration the way the plane is shooting straight for the Heavens, isn’t it? That blue sky was flawless, so the contrails showed up even better than usual when they usually kind of fall apart once the plane speeds away. I’ve never seen contrails so clear.

    Very impressive, both the stats and the picture! Ah Linda, got a notice from WP that my blog has been switched to the dreaded block editor. I had three separate drafts saved….and now have to figure out how to convert them to classic. Wish they had waited until after Thurs when I do my weekly post….

      Thanks Joni – I saw this plane and contrails and decided to use it as I knew I was nearing 1,500 blog posts and it would fall on a Wednesday so could do “Wordless Wednesday” … Diane (In Diane’s Kitchen) got the same notice and yesterday she said she was not sure she could continue but lots of people offered suggestions … go and see if any of them help you. I’m surprised they didn’t wait at least til month-end. Here is Diane’s link and the link in Reader that I think we commented on a few weeks ago:

        It was another gorgeous day today wasn’t it Joni? I hate to see the heat and humidity creep in tomorrow – Sunday 90+ again. Sigh. Hopefully you will get it all sorted out and Hugh’s link will help out. I looked on YouTube to see if any videos would give some insight, but all the videos, save for a couple, are from a year ago. Today they changed Facebook’s interface. Don’t care for it, but I never post on my FB Wall, just follow some news and nature sites and am in groups for this City and area crime sites. I am on Twitter and they did that several months ago – we had the option of returning to the old format or staying on the new format. I did not like the new-and-improved version, so returned and they have not changed it anymore (thankfully).

        It was a beautiful day…..I went for a walk along one of the waterfront parks and there was such a lovely breeze…..got some seagull shots. I posted tonight after two chats with the HE’s. My drafts were automatically converted to classic, although how I would know that tags/categories can be accessed by clicking on the post title does not seem very intuitive to me. Very quiet on here tonight – everyone must be trying to figure things out. I won’t worry about it for now. We have two nice days I think, then back to humid and rainy off and on next week – not very nice for the last week of summer.

        It was crisp and cool, like a Fall day … as much as I don’t like Winter, I am ready to move on to long sleeves and long pants. I only wear long pants in the Summer when I’m at big parks going through a wooded area as we have lots of ticks and more ticks and mosquitoes this year due to a warm Winter. It turns hot and humid tomorrow for at least 5+ days – 90s. Ugh.

        I never did drafts before the last year as I started and finished the post at one time since I write it in Word, so when finished in Word, just went to WordPress. But this year, since I have not been doing posts the same day I walk/take the pictures, I may not do the post all at one time. The drafts in Block Editor show up on the right – if you pre-publish, it shows up on the left and shows when it will publish. You would not have known that at all, but just clicking the draft link puts it back on the screen and ready to edit/preview. I am sure I read that they were not making this change til 2021?

        Draft link?? What change Linda?? I’m confused…I think my draft was where it normally would be, but the up and down arrow was in a different place, but I didn’t really notice a lot of stuff yet as I just wanted to get it published.

        Your interface may look different than mine since I am on the Gutenberg Editor and you are on the Classic Editor. My drafts are on the right-hand side. I usually only leave it in draft if I am waiting to do something like add my steps.

        I write it in Word and get it in final then transfer it over. I’ve done that since the beginning, but since going on the Gutenberg Editor, (which I like as I can make a justified margin), the HE suggested that I cut-and-paste to notepad, then transfer over … it is an extra step. The reason for that was if I transferred from Word to WP like I always did, the justification doesn’t happen. No, I always use Word first and have all my photos in a folder for that day’s post and if there are lots of photos, I separate them down by topic within the actual post, i.e. birds, squirrels, flowers, miscellaneous. I have everything ready to go before transferring them over, then I just format the photos and I have to justify EACH paragraph with “justify” and then ready to tag and publish. It is a long and painstaking process on posts that are long and picture-laden.

        It sounds like a lot of word. I may start with a draft in word, and then copy and paste over, and then edit over the course of a week or a few days depending on how many I have ahead. I’m always re-wording stuff so it sounds better…..sometimes right up until just before I post on Thursdays.

        I was really organized and put all my photos and posts done in Word on flash drives. I have not done that for a year – well, that is just terrible that I’m that disorganized to be honest. I have added something when I give it a final read and not put that edit into my Word document. I was out for most of the weekend, despite the heat, as it was sunny and clear – who knows what it will be doing next weekend? And I have some other things to do so will stick closer to home at my regular park on weekends for a while. The traffic, due to construction, this entire weekend was mind-boggling. Today, I had to go through three extensive construction zones to get to the sunflower field. Do you remember I wanted to go last year and the sunflowers had all bloomed so they were raggedy? So I decided mid-August this year I could catch them at their peak. So I wanted to go last weekend and I had to get my car A/C charged – it ran out of juice and it was sickening hot last weekend, so didn’t go. The mechanic where I go was booked up until Monday. So, I went today to see the sunflowers. Wore long black pants in this heat and took a long-sleeved shirt to put over me in case there were bees or bugs. I got there and yes, there was a big field, but no – they had not bloomed. In fact they were only up to my hip in height and the leaves were still over the bud, not yet unfurled, or in a few cases, just starting to. The bud was green. What a disappointment. I got some other sunflower pics when I was in the country a couple of weeks ago … not returning to the sunflower field in a month’s time when they bloom! Took pictures of the duds!

        That’s so weird, that they would be so late. I’m sure the big field they have here, well an hour away, is blooming already as my friend took her son for pictures there. And Diane posted that she had been to one. What a disappointment, after driving all that way in the heat! I got out this week too – 3 waterfront parks, the beach and a country drive to pick up peaches. The weather has been nice, but not sure about this week.

        I know – last year I said to myself that I would ensure I was there early enough for peak blooming, then last week when my A/C needed to be charged and it was too hot to drive there with no A/C, I tabled it to this weekend. I went purposely on Sunday as it is always a very congested main street, let alone with this construction that has been going on since May. With a big produce market and lots of businesses on Michigan Avenue, it is bumper-to-bumper traffic Monday through Saturday with no construction. Then, on top of it, they have shut down the Southfield Expressway and service drives all Summer, forcing people onto Michigan Avenue, then had Michigan Avenue down to one lane – what were they thinking? That’s what I figured, just like you, hotter than blazes, but sunny and dry – this week will not be fun with 9F every day and the chance of rain or storms … frustrating year of weather, among other things.

        That was nice Joni – yes, take your time and you won’t get frustrated that way. I was very frustrated and only used one photo and a couple of paragraphs when I learned the Gutenberg Editor – as simple as possible.

        I have used Pinterest if I’m looking for a specific picture for a blog post, but otherwise, I find it so congested. You’ll have to tell me how you like the darker background. I just chose the light one – haven’t adjusted anything yet. It is too “busy” in my opinion.

        I was trying to read the news that comes in my feed, plus a few groups I belong to (neighborhood forums) and I finally gave up on it as it was just too cluttered in my opinion. I tried dark mode as you suggested and it seemed like things were missing on it, so switched it back to light mode. I would go back to what they call “classic FB” but they switch in September anyway, so I kept it. In my opinion, it’s a big fail.

        Exactly – “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” as that expression goes. I follow park and nature sites on FB (the metroparks and state parks’ posts and also Audubon and Birds and Blooms) so going on FB and seeing a cluttered mess means it will take twice as long to decipher things til I get used to it.

      Thanks JP – we have gorgeous weather here in Michigan this week – you may have the same hopefully? That is helping to push my miles sky high. Who knew I had so much say for 1,500 blog posts? That was a beautiful morning, a flawless blue sky and I don’t believe I have ever seen contrails so perfect and the plane not obliterated by those contrails. I knew it was a keeper and I knew where I would keep those pictures to use … this milestone.

      Thank you Laurie – as I grew nearer that 1,500th post milestone, I knew I had to post something equally as big for the walking aspect. A story in the local paper recently touted a councilman marking one million steps since the pandemic began. He goes around looking at neighborhoods where his constituents have issues … he does this on foot plus he walks as well. So, I decided that would be a fun thing to do. Every day I hear about how important it is to get 150 minutes of exercise per week … you and I do that (at least now before the snow flies and ice slickens our paths).

      Thanks Wayne – that was a perfect sky, just the prettiest blue color when I saw that plane start climbing. I’ve never seen such perfect contrails either – usually they fade out pretty quickly.

      Thank you Esther. I took that photo of the soaring plane and decided I was going to use it for my 1,500th post as I knew it was coming up in the next few weeks. I often see planes and contrails, but this was the clearest contrail against that blue sky I’ve ever seen – twin jets with contrails was impressive to me. I used to just set a goal of ONE mile until two years ago when someone challenged me to walk more – then last year someone suggested I walk 2,020 kilometers for the year “2020” and so I upped my miles to accommodate that. After 2020 is over, I’m returning to just one mile more that the year before. When retired, that’s fine to set higher goals as I can walk in the Winter in the afternoon when it warms up a little and ice melts, or if it rains in the morning, I can still walk later. Then, there are days like today … an all day rainy and stormy day. We had three inches of rain in about three hours and it is pouring again.

        Linda, I love it when you share these new words with on your blog. I had no idea the the plane trails were called constrails. Cool!!
        You deal with some wild alternating weather: storms to hot to humid. Once winter arrives, you’ll have other weather patterns. Gotta have an open mind to be flexible dealing with all those weather changes.

        Our weather has been very erratic for three or four years now – in 2017, we had weather in the 50s and 60s in December. That was certainly the oddest weather we had! Yes, as I get older, I seem to be inflexible. I am fascinated with contrails and these were the clearest I’ve ever seen (the bright blue sky helped too!)

        Lately, we’ve had cold Decembers. But when I was living in SoCal, we used to have sunny Christmas days. It was bizarre.

        It is definitely not for sissies! We had such a gorgeous day today Esther. I’d like to bottle it up and keep it to dole out in Winter. After all that hot and humid weather, it was just 57 when I went out this morning and only got to 70 – that’s below average. That’s this erratic weather for you – last week it was 73 when I went out in the morning.

        Linda, I love the expression you used…”not for sissies.” lol. Is this the effect of climate change? Such drastic fluctuations in temps…except for the sudden lightning strike, we get dry heat to chilly evenings. But last winter we got ice on windshields and lots of snow in Lake Tahoe. I heard from friends that traffic there was horrendous. We want to go but have decided against it because of the distance to a large hospital. You never know, and I’d go mad if Ellis got sick and heart care for kids was not easily accessible.
        We got some weird problems that is hard to explain. But I know you get the idea!

        That is so true – you have to be made of strong stuff these days unfortunately. They are saying our weather is the effect of climate change … the four seasons are no longer defined like they used to be. Now they overlap, not just a fluke, for a few days, but the seasons are erratic and we have had 60+ in December, even January or a hard freeze the third week in September. Not normal. Yesterday and today, you could have worn a coat in the morning. I understand – it is not easy and worry can make you heartsick. Tomorrow heat and humidity appear again. This was a great respite while it lasted though.

        With the heat in CA and my lack of care, my spring flowers and plants have gone kaput. When the kids lost interest, it was hard to keep up with them. Because wherever I go, they follow and watering the plants becomes more than watering. The whole drama of who gets to water which plant, let’s stay outside, it’s too hot, etc. I feel the weather will cool down after this weekend as the days are getting shorter. Now it’s dark by 8 p.m. when it was closer to 8:30 or 8:40 in the summer.
        Take care in the heat! I’ll have my ice water ready to damp think cloths for my neck. So old school, but it’s very refreshing. hahaha

        We are roasting like sweet potatoes out here. H.O.T. Because of heat-related illnesses, some community centers are open as cooling centers. Everyone is required to wear masks, which should help.
        We’re staying in. Kids have Zoom Tae Kwon Do lesson for 30 minutes this afternoon. They will be very grouchy, and somehow I’ll become the bad guy for their miserableness. lol

        I keep hearing about heat and wildfires and saw a picture on Twitter of Yosemite Park with all the orange-colored sky … just amazing and scary. I hope it is over soon for you and your family Esther. Our weatherman today said we had the 4th hottest Summer on record. It was coolish this weekend, but heat and storms ramping up for the entire week. We had storms at 3:00 a.m. today and two storms overnight this evening/early Tuesday. The weather has been so erratic here.
