About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       It is getting ridiculous – I’d rather see the signs than hear the ads on the radio, or whatever calls I get all day long. It has to be election related – I got 22 calls the other day. I have caller I.D. so I see them coming in, mostly from other states and it says what state the call comes from. I don’t answer any of them.

      You’ve got that right Cheryl! I included a smattering of all the signage, especially the disparaging remarks and kudos about Governor Whitmer. It made for an interesting walk while I was taking photos of them.

    I love to read the signs as I run. Your sign photo collection certainly runs the gamut. I think I like the smiley face “vote” sign on the rock the best! 🙂

      Yes, it was enlightening walking around the ‘hood, that’s for sure. I like the rock best too – it was on the path at the Park. This was part of the 800 photos I took in the last 3+ weeks. I went on foot one Saturday taking harvest decor, signage and Halloween decor for upcoming posts, plus a few trips to local parks, the River, etc. all on that photo card. I almost used these photos to make a regular post as I stopped at one house to take a photo of the sign that starts out “In this House We Believe ….” I spoke to the homeowners’ teenage son about the sign and its importance in 2020 and beyond and praised the beautiful landscaping. It is always picture perfect. So we were chatting, and a big dog opened up the screen door and came out on the porch. The boy did not speak to the dog, but began signing to it. The dog then left the porch and came over to him. I said “did you just give your dog a command in sign language?” He said “yes, our dog is deaf and won’t leave the porch until we give it a command it is okay to do so. We have trained her by using all sign language as she’s been deaf for years.” I should have taken a picture of the two of them then incorporate it into a post, but I was in awe and didn’t want to wreck the moment by taking a photo.

    Well Linda…..no one can accuse you of discrimination as you’ve shown “Both Sides Now”! Re the song title – I can’t remember what song that line is from, or who sang it?

      I could have used that Judy Collins song “Both Sides Now” too couldn’t I? Yes, I was going to give equal time since it was Wordless Wednesday and no commentary. People both like and hate our Governor – I got that in this collection of pictures too.         That’s funny Joni – well I didn’t want to write it out (no words), then, because I used the arrow which I downloaded from Pixabay, I attributed it to the artist, so ended up using words anyway. Interestingly, I heard that song a lot of times and thought it was plural “signs” not singular. I also did not know this band was Canadian.

        That was really interesting Joni – thank you for sending it to me. I left a message on Dave’s site. We do have flying squirrels here – in fact, you know how the Metroparks have various interpretive tours? I’ve taken a few since 2018 when I bought my first pass. Well, I’ve seen these “lantern treks” advertised as I follow the Metroparks on Facebook and get an e-mail newsletter too. I never go out after dark but it would be fun, although I’m not sure I’d want a bat or flying squirrel missing its perch and landing on me. This is how they have the interpretive trek:

        I knew you would know. I told Dave you were the squirrel whisperer! Have you ever seen a flying squirrel? They sound creepy, like bats. I peeked at the nocturnal tour – maybe a nice idea for Halloween but not otherwise!

        Even with their lanterns on the tour, I’d be reluctant Joni … all I’d need to do would be to run into a spider and feel it on my face, or a big web all sticky on my face or hair and I’d be a goner! I hate in August and September and it seems that there are big, almost-invisible spider webs strung across trees and shrubs. I would like to see an owl – never have seen one except a rehabbed owl. The Metroparks have an event called “Owl Prowl” too – also a lantern walk. We have coyotes here, so I’m thinking anything out in the woods in the dark is not a good thing.

        It’s funny you said about being the squirrel whisperer as I have a series of funny shots of two squirrels trying to reach peanuts from under a park bench, rather than climbing up on it. I often walk and get an idea to go with the picture(s) and come home and jot it down so I don’t forget. That day I jotted down “I am not a squirrel whisperer after all!” I have the post half written and there are about a dozen photos. I hope it is as funny in the post as it was to see. I will use it a week from Friday. I have done my Halloween week posts – have four, doing a special one for next Saturday. Today I came home and wrote down four headlines and a quick outline for a post … I had intended to just do two posts a week in November, but I got a lot of photos today, so will start that in December instead. I have to organize my computer – I used to archive my posts written in Word and all my photos that go with the posts every quarter – I’ve not done it since Summer of 2019 and I have pics in the old laptop and some in this one … good thing we are not on the Windows 10 laptop yet. I have to organize the house first – spent over four hours organizing groceries from “laying in provisions” for Winter. It is messy and cluttered but I have everything I need but they had no peanuts … not good. I have some here already, but need enough for all Winter.

        I’m surprised you haven’t used the squirrel whisperer theme before! I envy you being so far ahead. I worked on a book review today, but will only post a WW this week, as I need one for the week after and am too busy to do another. I like to at least get a draft done ahead but it’s been a busy month…..sigh….I need to hibernate again.

        I was doing pretty good keeping ahead with the blog posts so I could concentrate on the weekends in October on getting the bulk grocery shopping done for Winter. I did that three weekends and one weekend in September – last weekend, they said nice Sunday on one station – the other said rain, so I went Saturday and we had an all-day raining, so I worked on some posts to get ahead. Yes, I like it – have a draft for the posts the first week in November, but just the narrative, not the pics uploaded yet. You will be busy with the art gallery showing.

        I went to a new place this morning. It is a wildlife refuge on the Detroit River and just opened up on September 30th. I’ve been following them on Facebook for a couple of years as they were supposed to open last Fall, then a delay, then COVID. It is very nice and I walked a lot, both in the wooded area, along a long pier that juts out into the River. It is migration time for the hawks and eagles right now, so thought I might see one and there are deer in the woods, but only saw an egret and seagulls. It was cold and windy so I figured not many people would go – I was right, as I was the only one on the trails and fishermen on the fishing pier. Then went to the grocery store and got more peanuts – happy for that. Then walked a mile at Council Point Park – hope I can get thru Reader a little farther tonight – I conked out from all my fresh air yesterday.

        I took mom for a drive to one of our larger parks today, but the leaves were already peaked and it was kind of gray so didn’t get good photos. Was looking for ducks, but none out swimming, so was disappointed. Behind in Reader again…I think more people post Thurs/Friday as I always seem to be behind later in the week.

        Saturday I got some more colorful leaves but yesterday not so much. I’ve gone to Heritage Park sometimes and it’s been full of ducks -in the water, on the grass nearby and sometimes I have gone and not a single duck. Halloween day should be beautiful they say – I have yard work to do and my neighbor’s tree should drop all its leaves by the weekend – it is a huge maple. Don’t want to rake and bag them until Sunday though – they say rain Sunday now. The weather has been iffy these days. I am behind in Reader again and if I don’t catch up on the weekend, I stay behind all week. I’ve not been totally caught up since early September.

    We’re not allowed to have signs in our neighborhood. It’s a blessing in disguise really. No visual clutter, no neighbor seething at another neighbor’s political signage. What a collection you have here.

      That’s a rule that should be followed in all neighborhoods leading up to an election Ally to avoid disgruntled neighbors. When I was growing up, people did not discuss their political affiliation for the very reason you mention.

      Thank you Margy – and that group also includes our Governor Gretchen Whitmer. She has been diligent in keeping rules in place to keep COVID-19 at bay after we had many deaths early in the pandemic – well, people like or hate her. Her strict rules and regs were challenged in court and the appellate court ruled she overstepped her bounds. This Friday was going to be no more enforcement of mask rules and all the rules she put in place since mid-March. The biggest issue is mask-wearing. Luckily the Health Department has stepped in and made rules for people to follow.

      I know – it is amazing how many signs there are. Most of these signs were on Emmons Boulevard from Fort to Gohl. I am glad I have caller I.D. on my landline because I get at least 20 junk calls a day. One day I had 22!

      This was not my usual type of post Matti, but I collected these photos on a day that I took a few hours and strolled around the neighborhood looking for harvest and Halloween photos, then decided 2020 and this election are not like anything we’ve had before so I strayed a little … I am going to do a Halloween post next Wednesday that’s different too, then for the most part back to normal. I like scarecrows a lot and try to find them for my blog … I am finding many people keep them from year to year, so was looking for different ones this year. You have a good day too Matti.

    You need to make an election rule that the loser has to leave the US. Even If Biden wins the other half is going to be rowing in the other direction!

      There are signs everywhere, not just for the election! And, you say two types of signs regarding our Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer – people either love or hate her. Many do not like her because they feel her rules/regs were too strict. Some people filed a lawsuit, it went to the appellate court, so tomorrow her rules expire – luckily the Health Department made some rules of its own. People are maddest about wearing masks and it took so long for gyms to open. I think at one time, Trump said if he lost, he would go to Canada. No admittance to Canada from the U.S. until at least November 21st, and likely longer after that. It was the 7th extension.
