About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Yes! I saw myself in that goose! My mom would see me nodding off on a commercial while watching TV and she would say “what are you doing Linda – counting the cracks in your eyelids?”

        Mom had a lot of expressions. I did it a lot – especially before VCRs were around and all our TV shows were on at 10:00 p.m. By the time Thursday rolled around, it was difficult not to fall asleep on the commercial break. 🙂

        I watched English sitcoms on Friday night, and I nearly always fell asleep. I don’t have time to watch TV any more.

        I’ve not seen TV since 2010. I have some TV movies that I taped downstairs but I don’t even have the TV or VCR plugged in. I had to get a new VCR and the salesman said “get one that also plays a DVD” … so we did, but I don’t even know if I remember how to use it, so everything stays unplugged for now.

        I called AT&T tonight because my landline bill was raised $6.00 and I wanted to know why. I thought there was an error – I was shocked at any rate that it was an increase. So I was chatting with the AT&T guy who wanted me to switch my internet to AT&T to get a deal for phone/internet – it was a great deal! He said what about cable? I said I’ve not seen TV since 2010 – he was incredulous. I told him my TV was a 19-inch model with a bulbous back on it. He asked about my phone – I said it’s with AT&T but a flip phone. I am sure he thinks I am a dinosaur. 🙂

    Miss Linda……………………..I’ve never seen any duck nor goose sleep like the last one by the grave marker do…………………………maybe at night when I’m sleeping they do that……………………………….it is clever how you got him by a grave marker!

      Maybe he was tired of me taking photos of him, so he shut me out by sleeping? Usually birds just tuck their head under their wing, as you know from your birds Ann Marie, but this goose wanted to tune out the rest of the world for its nap!! I see the geese, especially with their goslings, often sleep near the grave markers – I’m thinking the warmth of the sun on the marker warms them up if they sit on top. This was at Heritage Park.

    they all seem to turn their heads 180 degrees and tuck their head into their feathers. I would of guessed a sleeping animal would of been better to sleep with it’s head out so It can quickly hear and see any ground predator?

      Yes, and it never looked like a comfortable angle to sleep. It would not seem very safe unless you were a caged bird, but with the ducks I have noticed when I get to Parks where lots of ducks roost, there is always a lookout duck who lets the others sleep and he is the sentry. It is kind of cool to see.

        Yes, they always have sentries and sometimes, like the Pekin ducks (the beautiful white ducks) I’ve seen them supposedly standing guard with one eye open and snoozing. This is in Summer if I go early in the morning. I have a photo of one sneaking a nap and looked up and saw me and freaked out. I was not that close but he realized he shirked his duties bigtime. 🙂

        Yes, they are amazing when they do that … seagulls fly out away from shore and group together on the water. Again the sentry … I used to see them if I was at the River early enough.

        many birds fly out to the Lighthouse. They like islands where they know there aren’t any ground predators lurking about!

        I don’t blame those birds nor any unfortunate “prey” on the ground either. While I was working outside today, I saw a huge hawk flying overhead. Made me feel a little sick – it would have had no problem snatching one of my furry friends. Renewed sadness for the loss of Grady and his mate/pal, Pitch, Tar and Willard … the Fox squirrel did not have a name. Sigh.

      Your state is still in the news. Michigan is out of the limelight (for now anyway). Better plan on staying up every night through the weekend Laurie. 🙂 P.S. I have nodded off in the middle of proofreading my own stuff – sad!
