About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.     Brrr…such wintry photos! The ice in the first photo almost looks like a big turtle!

      It was amazing to see Laurie – you are right, I hadn’t noticed that the way it is balanced on the rocks like that does look like a turtle. It was cold and not sunny enough to be melting anytime soon. The slabs of ice formed, broke apart and the freighters made waves and the ice glided over to the shoreline.

      I like that idea too Ann Marie – I think those hunks of ice slammed up against those boulders at Elizabeth Park and broke apart. It was amazing to see them just teetering on those big boulders.

    I’m not ready for the ice, snow and cold! I’m so glad I retired..lol I still can’t believe you walk in the cold!

      We have ugly weather now – freezing rain since noon and turning into snow overnight and more snow Sunday. Each time we had snow it has disappeared in a few days (my kind of Winter) … don’t know about this though. I don’t mind the cold – it was only 20 this morning, but clear with no ice and snow. Yes, retirement is great … less time on the roads in ice and snow.

      Thank you Christy – it was right after the thick ice broke up and the waves from freighters (which were still running) sent the ice slamming up onto the boulders. It was amazing. The first three photos in this post are how the Detroit River looks when it freezes over – it’s very cool as the waves just freeze in place.

      Yes – aren’t they amazing Esther? They are ice sheets from the Detroit River and the freighters come thru and break them up and they scatter and slam onto the boulders along the seawall. Thanks Esther. We had beautiful weather this weekend. The sun came out for the first time this year! It was only 23 F when I was out this morning though. Brrrr! I wore boots for warmth and also in case of any ice patches around.

        Now I know what ice sheets looks like. That must be an interesting sight to see, especially for kids. I can see why the ice is forming with 23 F…that is very cold!! Stay warm and don’t catch cold. It’s not easy to go see the doctor for anything these days. Best to stay healthy.

        I bundled up so well – I don’t mind the cold, but when ice and snow creep into the forecast, then I am reluctant to walk. I know – it is best to stay away from everything these days. I have to cancel my dentist appointment for cleanings – when I went last Summer, they asked if I would be going back to April and October and I said “yes” – not going now in April now, that’s for sure.

        If it doesn’t hurt, reschedule. It’s a risk.
        My dentist called me too to schedule my cleaning, but I had to cancel as well. Don’t know when it’ll be safe to go back. I’m glad my other dental work was done early last year…it was a crown for my front tooth. Whew…that would’ve been bad.
        I’m sure dentists take all safety precautions, but it’s still close contact. My dentist is very talkative and I can’t tell her to not talk. So I’ll just wait till this COVID thing is behind us. Let’s keep our teeth healthy in the meantime! Gargling with salt water is helpful too, so I’m told endlessly by my mom and MIL.

        Wow on your front tooth – was that painful Esther? My boss lost the crown on his front tooth last year, just before he was going out of town on business. He had to reschedule the flight and get an emergency appointment. No, I’m not willing to go yet – maybe in the Fall, but I’ll see. A lot of people will not take the vaccine and that impacts the rest of us and life as we knew it. I think my dentist had an N-95 mask on but the hygienist (who was with me more – he just takes a peek afterward) had a face shield and a mask. The eye doctor was fine – that was a Plexiglass shield between him/me and we were both masked. They held the door to let you in/out of the building and brought your glasses to the car afterward. What a world we live in now – scary isn’t it. Gargling with salt water is good for plaque or to avoid gum problems?

        Gargling with salt water is good for the reasons you mentioned, as well as tooth pain, throat pain, and just for that clean feeling. Both my mom and MIL swear by it and that’s the first thing they suggest. Have it handy for a time when you get a sore throat (hopefully not) or tooth ache (again hopefully not).
        It’s understandable that your boss would cancel his business trip. Having a little stub as a front tooth is not the best look and impression you want to make on a client.
        My front tooth didn’t hurt, but the root was dying from a head injury I had as a kid. It kept discoloring and I had no idea why this was happening. I was told that it would eventually fall out if it didn’t get replaced: root canal and crown. I was really happy with the results for a few years but then the top of the tooth turned a darker color, which was the metal showing. This required a new crown. Next time, it’ll have to be replaced with an implant. Fortunately, I got few more years before that procedure.
        Salt water has lots of oral hygiene benefits for killing bacteria in the mouth and throat, as well as gum benefits…while you wait to see the dentist, try it out at intervals. Do I sound like a dental salt salesperson?!

        I knew it was good if you have mouth abrasions. Ever brush your teeth and you’re in a hurry and the toothbrush goes off your teeth and hits your gums and causes an abrasion? I do that a lot … slow down Linda! Anyway, I always have salt to swish around but didn’t realize that it was good for toothaches. I wear a bite splint and have for years because I grind my teeth. I have read in the past that mouthwash is not of much benefit, though it is touted for many medicinal purposes for good mouth hygiene.
