About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.     I just love these birds, I like it when they stretch their longs legs out when standing on a branch for so long.

      He liked stretching and besides preening, he shot me a mad look too. I decided he looked a little like he was doing yoga as he was a contortionist and the last photo, was picking up his foot and sticking it out. 🙂

      Thanks Ally – he was just about 10 feet away. Yes, I think of “Humbugs” and I think of hard candy. Laura Secord in Canada was a chocolatier but they made brown-striped hard candies which they called “Humbugs” and since I was not allowed hard candy, my grandmother always had a little tin of them in her apron pocket and would sneak them to me when we visited.

    Lovely photos! I used to see herons on Long Island, but I never got close enough for a good picture. My zoom isn’t very good, either.

      Thanks Anne – glad you liked them. I was walking past this little cove and heard a big splash and there he was, by himself and I was just 10 feet away from him, so I really lucked out. He didn’t squawk or leave first. He was busy fishing.

        I wish birds were careless around me. Speaking of birds, I just went outside before 10 pm to check the bird bath. It was frozen over. I broke the ice and poured the water over the deck railing. It will be filled with warm water when I get up tomorrow.

        Anne – I felt really luck y to come upon this heron. He seemed almost oblivious to me. It was funny as I just missed the Egret shot and turned around and saw this guy. The birds appreciated the warm water I am sure. We had some ugly weather yesterday. When I left the house, the sky was blue and puffy clouds. Suddenly a dark cloud passed overhead and the northern suburbs had had some snow in the early a.m. so I figured we were next. In just a few minutes, the wind picked up and I could hardly stand, snow swirling around my feet and down the street and ice pellets, then snow, then ice pellets. The cloud passed and it brightened up again, but didn’t melt as it was a wind chill in the teens. We have a nice weekend – 70 on Easter. The weather is wacky.

        We went out to walk this morning when it was 23 degrees. It will be about that cold tomorrow morning. I think Easter will be rather cold.

        It was cold here both days – I kept on the boots yesterday as along the Creek, there is often ice on the path, but there was none. Like yours, our Easter will be chilly. Not a day for how we used to dress back in the day with the little anklets and frilly dresses and no coat.

        We had a blizzard one Easter on Long Island. Another time the temperature was near 90. It’s more pleasant in between.

        Wow – what a disparity in temps. Yes, in between is much nicer. We have had a large range of temps this past week. Today was very pleasant, especially after Wednesday being 70 for a high and Thursday having snow and only a high of 32.

      This was a big heron so I think there were plenty of fish in this little cove where I saw him. Sometimes you see those herons and they’re skinny, but not this one. I hope your heron goes to the Metropark where you used to walk with your clients.

      Thanks Rebecca! They are beautiful birds and I was lucky enough to be standing just ten feet from him while he fished and preened and like you said he was not bothered by my presence at all – so unlike the heron at Council Point Park which bolts and squawks as soon as he sees me.

      He was doing some contortions to preen, then give me a look in that one shot. He did well with the fishing. He caught a couple of fish while I was there Laurie, but his back was turned at the time. I heard the splash and saw his beak plunge into the water and something wriggling around in it afterward.

    I think it’s a great blue heron. His poses do look rather yoga-like. Nice pictures! 🙂

      Yes, I didn’t want to use the whole name as it took up too much space. My friend always calls them “GBH” when she is telling me a story about one. Her and her husband live in an apartment building with a pond in the middle and they get lots of waterfowl visiting their pond daily.

        I was very excited to be just 10 feet from him Barbara and he didn’t move, wasn’t spooked by me in the least, so it was great. We do have lots of GBHs at the large and small parks around here. I saw a Black-crowned Night Heron at my little park and have seen one Green heron … the latter two are much smaller and they are just passing through I believe.

      Thanks Joni – glad you liked the title and the shots. The last shot, he picked up his foot like he was kicking. 🙂 I was just about ten feet from him and he didn’t care in the least, so I lucked out.
