#Wordless Wednesday – allow your photo(s) to tell the story.
About Linda Schaub
This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub
That green head is so shiny. Great photos as usual. Happy Wednesday

Yes, it almost glows in the dark! They are beautiful ducks … soon they will lose their feathers and look a little mottled looking. Glad you liked the photos. Back at you!

Miss Linda……………………………..you are so creative in story telling even with just your photos…………..and thank you for taking the time to wait for Mr. Mallard to take his bath!

Thank you Ann Marie … Mr. Mallard looked so happy after he had his morning bath and seemed to sparkle in the sun.

Looks like a pretty day for Mr. Duck to preen. Nice photos, Linda!

Thanks Rebecca. It was a pretty and sunshiny day Rebecca … chilly too, but he didn’t seem to care as he plunged, then preened.

Thank you Joni – yes I did have the big camera with the long lens and this was at Heritage Park about a month ago. I watched the bath routine and the follow-up preen. I thought this Mallard looked pleased with its appearance, even gazing at its reflection in the water.

Ha! Actually I was going to add that exactly – he did looked quite pleased with himself! Preening about his greening head dress!

Yes, the “smile” and I swear it was/is a smile in that picture. In the next month, they’ll start moulting and have bare spots all over and look very mottled looking. I saw some large goose feathers at the Park this morning so soon the geese will be moving to another venue as they can’t fly, so they go by the Creek down to the Detroit River until their flight feathers grow back.

I think that Mallard thought he looked good and did that pose. I thought he looked like he was grinning in that header photo (I know it was not just my imagination.) 🙂

“Ablution”… I learned a new word today – thanks!

You’re welcome Dave. My boss used to say that word when he came into work in the morning: “I’ve had my morning ablution and am ready to take on the day.” I think I mentioned he’s a wordsmith and loves to use sometimes odd or archaic words. [I am very behind in Reader and I know I am two behind with your Thursday posts – we had a computer malfunction with our e-mail at work and lost data and our ability to use e-mail for over a week and are still recovering. It necessitated some weekend time and evening time for me, so I’m eight days behind, but will catch up eventually.]

He was getting all spiffed up for Saturday night date night. He reminded me of cowboys, like in the mini-series “Lonesome Dove” (and I also read and enjoyed the book immensely). On Saturday night the cowboys had a bath in one of those tubs with the claw feet and then went to town to look for ladies. My grandmother had one of those bathtubs. I’m going to write about it one time – her one indulgence while she was working, was lavender bath salts when she got home from work. I liked that tub though it took up 3/4s of the bathroom.

Thank you Wayne! This Mallard was getting all spiffed up and he was preening and would open and shut his eyes and looked once at his reflection in the water and I laughed when it appeared he was grinning. “Pickin’ and grinnin'” was a line used on a TV show called “Hee Haw” when the main characters played their guitars and cracked jokes.

that was Roy Clark! I use to watch that show! It seems so corny now!

I watched it too – my dad’s favorite show. I was going to mention Roy Clark and Buck Owens but figured you might not be familiar with the show or country music. They had a segment called “Pickin’ and Grinnin'” … roy Clark would say “I’m pickin” and Buck Owens would say “I’m grinnin’.”

Of course I watched it! You forget back than there wasn’t much to watch!

Yes, it was on a Saturday night as I recall. I just thought of that show a few weeks ago – there are lots of crows in the neighborhood flying overhead and they always had crow sounds in the background.

I didn’t realize this but it kept going until Dec 27,1997!

Wow – neither did I! I’d have thought late 80s if I would have taken a guess. It was the country version of Laugh-In.

Rowan and Martin did “Laugh In” first and then “Hee Haw” for the rural people!

I have to admit I liked “Hee Haw” better than “Laugh In”. I liked the Gladys and the old man on the park bench the best on “Laugh In”.

Just like I MUST moo when I see cows, I am equally compelled to quack when I see ducks. This handsome fella had me quacking 🙂

Well Janis – you quacked me up with that comment. He was getting spiffed up and kept checking out his reflection in the water. 🙂
