About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.     Seeing turtles sunning themselves on logs or stones makes me happy, too! Lovely pictures, Linda. Especially that baby turtle in the last one. 🙂 It’s learning the ropes…

      They line up so perfectly Barbara and if I’m lucky I can sneak in a photo between the trees, but if they catch sight of me, then one by one they will slide into the water. Yes, he was a cutie wasn’t he? Reminded me of my turtle Myrtle that I had when I was young.

    Love the turtles, esp. the cute little baby one. We never ever see turtles here…..well once I saw one crossing the road but I believe it had escaped from someone’s house.

      Yes, that little one was cute. I had a turtle named Myrtle when I was a kid. I got it shortly after we moved here. Last Saturday when I was at the two parks, I saw turtles sunning twice. The last time a couple of bikers rode past and the guy said “hey, did you see that Snapping Turtle on the big rock?” I got there just in time – it saw me and then slid into the water.

        I love the name Myrtle the Turtle! I don’t know anything about turtles – is a snapping turtle the kind you took pics of or is it different?

        See, I was into creative names even at 10 years old. Wait until I get more pictures of my black and blonde squirrel and then Two-Tone will make his debut here. I think these are painted turtles as they have the stripes on their head and their shell is flatter and kind of shiny. The snapping turtles have higher shells and are more brown. We have both kind at the Park and I was about 20 feet away from them. It’s difficult to photograph them on this long log because there are no openings in the bushes so you have to push through and position yourself between the bushes and trees and ensure you don’t fall into the Creek.

        I have a few pictures of him, but through the front door, so there’s a bit of a reflection. I need to get some more pics for his debut. You’re welcome. The snapping turtles seem to be much bigger than the painted turtles.

      Me too and whenever you see them out of the water, they all line up perfectly on the log and the minute they get spooked by a human trying to get a closer look at them, they all slide off and plop into the water simultaneously.

      Ann Marie – you make my head swell. 🙂 I am glad you liked it. I was pretty lucky to get that many turtles at one location. Usually I get three or four max on one log. I always liked that song and figured I’d include it with the post in case people weren’t familiar with the reference.

      Thanks Esther – glad you liked them and as for the title, I try to think of a fun title for Wordless Wednesday. I always liked that song so it seemed a good fit. On warm, sunny days, the turtles sunbathe on this big fallen tree, that has been in the water so long, the sun and elements has bleached it. They like to line up and if a human gets too close, they slide into the water. Last Saturday I got more turtle shots at the two other parks (at least I hope I did – I’ve not looked at the photos yet).

    Wonderful turtles photos, Linda. I don’t think many people thing to photograph the reptiles among us. We have some painted turtles in a pond a couple miles away. Once, I found one on our dirt road and made sure it got safely to the side (hopefully the side he wanted) so as not to get run over. Overall a rare sight. I am also a John Denver fan.

      Thanks Eilene. You are kind to help them cross the road. I’ve only seen a turtle out of the water one time when it was a snapping turtle laying eggs. I was really hoping to see the baby turtles stream out of the nest and was sorry I missed it. You often see pictures of turtles on the beach heading to the water en masse.

    Oh, those sliders are so cool! Love seeing the baby slider in the last photo. I need to go over to one of our local ponds and gaze at the turtles.

      I like them too Laurie – on the very hot days, they are sunning themselves daily, even early in the morning. Yes, the grandsons would love seeing them – they’re peaceful seeing them lined up like that, especially the baby. 🙂

      Thanks Sabine – on the really hot days, even in the morning they are out sunning themselves in neat little lines along the log. You have to smile when you see them. I saw some turtles on last Saturday’s excursion as well. I’ve not looked at those pictures, nor the Saturday before, so I hope they all came out.

      You should see how it looks now – it is a shame as the weeds are growing everywhere and I can’t get near it. I should have taken a photo for this post. It could be follow the leader … I had just put out sunflower seeds which were a bigger draw than the peanuts.

    I don’t know how you snuck up on these guys! Every time I saw any turtles they would scurry in the water from the log so fast I barely saw them! Amazing shot!!!

      Thanks Diane – I was hiding between some bushes because they would have done the same thing for me … they will slide off the log, one by one and plop into the water. I saw a snapping turtle last week at another park. He/she was sunning itself and all of a sudden saw me or my shadow and freaked out!

        I wondered about that because, of course, I had one or two of those pet turtles growing up. How large are the adult turtles in your pictures?

        I had one too Janis – I called it Myrtle. The biggest turtles on this log were about a foot big, but there was a snapping turtle at this park a few years ago and some of us walkers watched it digging a hole about 20 feet from the Creek and laying eggs in it. She was huge – maybe three feet and those feet were flipping the earth around to dig that hole with quite a force.
