About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Ann Marie – I’ve often passed this house over the past three years because there has been extensive construction on the long street which is my normal route to/from Council Point Park. So, I’ve had to take a detour every time they tear up portions of the street. This is not the first chalk art in the driveway and sidewalk out front by the kids.

    Disturbing images, to say the least. Any idea who the “artists” are (and how old?) I’d think their parents would want to know about this…

      Hi Dave – I did not perceive them as dark images at all. I have had to detour from my regular route to/from Council Point Park over the last few years due to extensive construction on that street, so this is my “go-to” street. I’ve posted kids’ chalk art from this house before. This chalk art and former chalk art is always on the driveway and on the City sidewalk in front of the house. There is a car in the driveway.

      Anne – I knew you’d get a kick out of it as you appreciate chalk art. I’ve not seen as much chalk art this Summer and I figure that’s because we have had so much rain. Kids don’t want to waste their time (and chalk) only for it to wash away.

    I love when I see chalk art on the sidewalk or bike path. Gives me something to think about during a run! 🙂

      Same here Laurie – we didn’t have chalk art growing up, so these kids are pretty lucky they can express themselves in a colorful and sometimes outlandish way. 🙂

    Looks like sword play scene or someone ready to grill holding a long fork and blow torch! Kids have wild imaginations. Gotta ask the artists themselves for the inspiration behind their art.

      I think was innocent too Esther and I thought more like it was dinner on the grill with the dad using a big fork to turn chicken pieces and a flame starter. That’s what I got out of it, but I’ve never had kids either. 🙂 We had a stormy beginning to the week. Parts of the county I live in had flooding (up to seven inches). We got new sewers in 1990 so I was okay, but the mess and thousands of vehicles were stranded and floating on the expressway. Amazing weather we’re having … was reading about your wildfires starting up already with your extreme heat wave. Glad things are mellow … keep it that way. 🙂

      Thanks Esther! Wow, it was 899 the other day and I was amazed at that. When did that happen? The follower count jumped pretty quickly all of a sudden. There are lots of squirrel lovers out there. 🙂 Yes, that is the origin of my blog and I wish Marge was here so she could see how it has grown. For the longest time, it was short, one-paragraph posts with one-name titles and no pictures.

      I believe it was kids as I’ve seen kids’ chalkwork there before and there were a couple of pieces of chalk left there and that’s happened before. I think Dad was making dinner on the grill and that’s what they drew. Thank you Shelley. I was surprised to see that total despite the fact that I’ve gotten quite a new followers lately.

      We didn’t have chalk art when we were growing up and any chalk might have been used for hopscotch. TV and/or social media … I think this was about dinner to be honest.

        We had someone use chalk at the school playground on the asphalt/cement for the girls to play hopscotch, otherwise our neighborhood had a gravel road as it was a new subdivision. Probably the teach used her chalk for the hopscotch squares.

        we entertained ourselves with what we had! On a hot day we emptied the garbage cans out and filled them up with water! We each had out own cooling pools!

        I had this little yellow blow-up pool that I shared with my best friend Linda Crosby. I looked for the blog post to send you of us in the little wading pool, but you already saw it.

        We were inseparable back then. She had a little sister Beth and a little brother Steven. She was a bit of an attention seeker and though we were pals, she tended to cause arguments and take my toys, especially my tricycle. We couldn’t ride on the streets as the streets and driveways were gravel, so we had to ride on the grass. My parents saw Linda taking my things and told me they’d give me a dime every time I told her off. So I was game and she took something and I beat her up and went skipping into the house yelling “I beat up Linda Crosby, can I have my dime?” Her mother heard that and didn’t approve and I got a lickin’ for breaching the “what is said in the house, stays in the house rule” … bet you had that too. Lind moved away a year before we moved here. Her father was a salesman and he asked for a transfer to another territory because her little sister Beth died of a heart condition and they wanted to get away and start anew. Beth had been sick and in/out of hospitals her entire short life.

        That story about asking for my dime was told many times. I was NEVER that bold and brazen back then, believe me. I never let her pick on me again after that time. Yes, it was sad as Beth was quite young when she died. The first person I knew who died.

    They are well made so whoever made these sidewalk drawings get a good star –
    I recently took a photo of a dragonfly chalk art on the street and not sure if my photo came out tho

      Glad to give you a smile Yvette. I thought they were well made too and I’ve walked past this house before and there have been kids’ chalk art there before. I always look for chalk art – a person on the next street used to use chalk spray and it lasted throughout a few rain storms and never marred it. That young lady used to do some powerful artwork.

        Had no idea they even had spray chalk art at could last like that – but it makes sense
        And I think the dragon fly chalk art I saw has been made with updated tech stuff because it was there after a couple rains – hmmm

        I had no idea either, but I did a post with pictures of the chalk art and the next morning a guy was out moving the sprinkler in the front yard. I remarked “the water didn’t ruin the chalk art” and he told me it was spray chalk and it lasts a long time, but not permanent. I was fascinated with that.

    Well, someone has quite the imagination. Some of the images might look a little creepy but I remember my brothers drawing things that could be taken as violent (guns, etc.) and they both turned out OK.

      I thought it was imaginative too Janis and as I took pictures of the driveway and City sidewalk images, I thought the topic was more BBQ related, but having not had kids or ever been around them, I could be way off base. I had to smile when you told about your brothers’ drawings and turning out okay. 🙂
