About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Don’t blame you Cathy. I took this morning off from walking … so oppressive out there and so dark it looked like still another storm was imminent. They said we’d likely have thunderstorms. That storm at 3:00 p.m. yesterday – wow! The lights flickered and I thought DTE was decreasing the power … then the weather radio came on for a severe storm warning. I lost my internet … all within a minute’s time. Hope you’ve been fine at your house both flooding and power-wise. Stay cool.

        We are fine here. One street over from the Ecorse Creek too. The creek rose and then just flowed on down big time.

        I heard the Ecorse Creek mentioned the other day on the news and the overflow. At Council Point Park, I cannot understand why the water level at the Creek didn’t rise with all the rain we’ve had. I took pictures last year, or the year before, of the water over top of that cement drain area and that’s not happening this year. Thankfully the Creek does not rise enough to flood the perimeter path. The last few weeks before all this rain, I was going out to bigger parks in the mornings before work. I knew it was just a matter of time before the water would sog up the trails and grounds, causing more mosquitoes and although I have rubber boots, I can’t get in my miles wearing them. I’m so ready for Fall.

      That’s makes sense Ally, as the weather is so oppressive lately that walking has lost a lot of its appeal. In the past, I’ve just walked the perimeter of the grocery store several times to get my miles in and also stay cool. Our city participates in a classic cruise through all the Downriver communities. There are lots of vehicles, even vintage Model Ts and Model As in the parade of cars. This particular old car, converted to a hot rod, can be found at this donut shop seven mornings a week, so a good photo op.

      I think I’ll hit my goal too Laurie, unless Mother Nature has other plans for me. I had a personal goal of 700 miles by halfway through 2021 and I fell short of that goal, but have six months to get it done and hope to make it up mostly in the Fall months. I heard France opened up today – good news for your pre-race trip. The bright-yellow vintage ‘rod is parked at a donut shop seven days a week, so I thought it’s be fun to include it in my miles tally.

      The heat might force me into that action Ann Marie. That bright yellow very OLD car is a staple at Yum Yum Donut Shop every morning in the 9:00 o’clock hour. Sometimes a guy who walks at the Park joins him – he has a ’56 Chevy. It’s fun to see them.

        Thank you for saying that Yvette. Last week I sorted through a ton of photos, so there will be enough photos for Wordless Wednesday for a couple of months. I really am enjoying doing this feature. I have a fun set of photos to use on 4th of July … too bad it was not on a Wednesday.

        And I think it is so fun how bloggers find their groove with certain themes and then get a signature kind of style –
        Part of the beauty to be found in blog world that I think is so different from other social
        Media –
        The art and creative energy bloggers bring is so varied – and of course the other major sites (like FB – IG – TT – etc) can have art and creativity – but just not the same to me –

        I agree with you Yvette. A blog is so much more personal because you are sharing a piece of yourself and there is a bravado when your blog makes its debut (in my opinion anyway). When I began my blog in 2011, with the exception of my neighbor who encouraged me to start the blog, I did not tell any of my friends about it for a long time and I don’t post my blog on Facebook – I don’t have a lot of friends on Facebook but two of them follow my blog by e-mail and I never told them about the blog for a few years as I recall. I now hope that some events fall on a Wednesday to use that theme … I am having a lot of fun with it. I am glad I’ve reduced my posts to one long and one Wordless Wednesday. I’ve not been keeping up here on WP again … it’s so easy to fall behind. I hope you enjoy the holiday Yvette.

        well do keep in mind that (in my opinion) falling behind on following blogs is okay when you have a seasoned blog – I think it is like having older children or being at a job for a while – you can change your MO and be fine – you know what I mean?
        I guess I mean that I think we can get behind often and still stay connected because the rapport is already developed.

        and your one long and one short post seems like a great schedule. I was trying to do “thrice a week” and it worked for June – but now I might (big might) do every day for July to join with the tree squares monthly theme – I prepped the photos already but not sure how I want it to unfold.

        Right now I am struggling to stay awake Yvette. They are shooting fireworks in the neighborhood and it sounds like a battlefield. I went to bed last night only to hear firecrackers and loud booms until after midnight. In an effort to bulk up my miles, I did 5 1/2 miles, worked in the garden a couple of hours and did some housework. I know you are correct about behind behind and I still feel a little guilty. I go here late tonight and did my post for tomorrow – it is short and sweet and took me 10 minutes tops to do it. I am also going to cut down my posts as I know they are way too long and picture laden. I was going to two or three parks on a Saturday so that will be multiple posts rather than one incorporating two parks. Every day is difficult – I know they have the blogging challenges and you and Shelley did the month-long challenges – I admire that as it’s a lot of work.

        And even though I am doing the tree squares monthly challenge – I plan on combining some posts – if I do “every day” for a month (or a few months) it is way too much and backfires – so I plan on combining days rather than do 31 posts

        My post today is a different kind of post Yvette. That will make it a little easier on you than having to do 31 individual posts. I hope it works out better that way. As for the fireworks, it has been going on since way before Memorial Day. I never understand as to Memorial Day as it’s supposed to be a solemn event. About six or seven years ago, the current Governor decided that Michigan should have the revenue that people spend in Ohio crossing the state border to buy large fireworks, so he allowed Michigan to sell huge fireworks here. You can go into a grocery store and buy combo packages of huge fireworks. No need to go to fireplace pop-up tents and the like. So last night it went to around midnight, same the night before and tonight likely as well. It is the big booms that worry me as I’ve had some spent firecrackers in the front and back yard, plus one melted on a shingle. I rest easier after Fourth of July holiday.

      Thanks Diane – now my head is swelled! This Summer has not been my cup of tea Diane – I’ll tell you that. I usually try to be closer to 700 miles by the end of the second quarter, but the heat and the torrential rain have made things bad for walking. We had a classic car cruise last weekend – they have cars mostly from the 50s and 60s, but some were Model T and Model A vintage models. I did not go and watch, but this very cool old car is at a donut shot every morning. A guy with a 56 Chevy Bellaire joins him sometimes.

    I haven’t walked in a week – it’s just too hot and humid, and too much rain – torrential downpours almost every day. Another blogger I follow posted today about flooding on the Detroit freeways?

      I just read her account of what happened. There were many pumps that failed and just shut down and that was the major cause of the flooding. Plus we had high winds and downed wires and a lineman was killed when he fell from a ladder onto a live wire.

        Oh that’s tragic. We were very lucky here compared to other areas – a few tree branches down and torrential downpours, but no really bad winds.

        You were lucky Joni. I was not only worried about the winds and big trees, but also the soggy ground and the big trees being uprooted. We have an unsettled week coming up after Tuesday and it will be 90 again on Sunday after a two-day reprieve. Hate to hear that. What a Summer … I’m ready for Fall.

        I hate when that happens too Joni, especially this Summer which has been horrible in my opinion. Yesterday was great, this morning almost as nice – I walked at the Park and in the neighborhood and did 5 1/2 miles. Came home to do yard work, five minutes into that, it started to rain. I dashed into the garage, almost put everything away, but decided to wait it out and it stopped but the sun never came out again. It’s the strangest weather and my ornamental miniature Japanese Maple already has bright-red leaves.

    🙂 This made me think of something my husband always says. When the car needs new tires he tells me it’s time to get new sneakers for the car. I hope you get a chance to catch up on your miles soon. That yellow is so bright!!!

      That is clever Barbara. I’m still on my original tires on my car … just 8,600 miles on it and it will be 11 years old next month. The first few years of my walking regimen, my goal was not only racking up miles for me, but ensuring I walked more miles than I drove. That wasn’t really difficult since I only did errands or grocery shopping around town. I am really going to walk my socks off the next two days when we have a brief reprieve from this heat and humidity. It is really bright and he parks it in the same place every day at a donut shop. You can’t miss it!

        Walking more miles than you drive is an amazing mindset! I know you will make the most of your heat/humidity break. We’re supposed to have a soggy and cold holiday weekend. Possibly a nor’easter in July! Incredible…

        I actually used to write more about my walking more than driving and a friend who follows me by e-mail wrote me an e-mail and said “Linda, you sound like a little old lady who is a Sunday driver and people are going to think something is wrong with you.” I generally would take that comment with a grain of salt and found it a little snarky to be honest, but I have not mentioned it as much. I also started to going to bigger parks after I got interested in photography again. I really took very little photos until I got the digital compact with more zoom in April 2015, then I went farther than Council Point Park, thus more miles … but my 2009 car with just 8,600 miles on it speaks volumes about the walking versus driving, doesn’t it? Our cool weather is short-lived unfortunately. We had a gorgeous day today and tomorrow will be nice, but 81 and Sunday it’s back in the 90s and a week of unsettled weather. (Say it isn’t so!) I hope you don’t get the promised nor’easter … our weatherman said “the forecast has something for everyone!”

After record-breaking high temperatures this week, today we are due for a record-breaking lowest high temperature. Incredible! It’s so tough figuring out what to wear each day when we head out the door!

        Well, that is nice of you to think that they were secretly envious Barbara … I thought it was snarky too, but I thought (and still think) it’s fun to walk more than I drive. I just may have that going this year because I still do jot my car mileage down the beginning of the year. This year, since I tried not to go anywhere due to COVID, I didn’t buy gasoline from November 23rd until late March this year. I did not drive much at all. Your weather is as crazy as ours. We are breaking records all over the place. Like you, we had very cold lowest temps and this morning it was 72 in the house when I got up. It warmed up a lot today, but 90 tomorrow. It is tough to know what to wear – long-sleeved sweater for me this morning.

      It was absolutely gorgeous out this morning Sabine – cool and crisp even. We have one more day of cooler weather, then back to 90 degrees Sunday and unsettled weather all week. We had Downriver Cruisin’ last weekend. It’s an event where vintage cars are driven through four cities in my area. They drive all day long in a big loop. I have gone and watched in the past, but this owner of this car parks it at that donut shop at that same parking spot every morning (in good weather) while he is inside having coffee and donuts. I took a picture on day when I was walking, knowing I could put it to good use one day. Hope your heat continues to fizzle away and you return to normal temps again soon.

        Thanks Sabine. The weather was nice and cool; tomorrow 90 again. Worked outside for a few hours. Got everything out and it started to rain. It stopped 10 minutes later, but everything was wet. I walked at the Park and in the neighborhood. Went to look for the two trumpet vines to see if they are in bloom – the one was gone and the one at Memorial Park was in full bloom. I think this one is a dud – no buds at all, so I cut it back – it was growing out of control and up my neighbor’s wall (it has little suckers to grip the brick). I even brought a sample of leaves from the Park to ensure it is indeed the same plant, though the woody, twisted steam kind of confirmed it.

        You might consider calling or visiting a nearby nursery to ask about the trumpet vine, Linda! They might need to be pruned at a certain time in the season. Yard work has been on the calendar here too. And lots of watering. Stay safe and have a great rest of the weekend!

        That is an idea Sabine. I thought I’d check out those other two that have been around and blooming for years since according to my research they bloom beginning in July. I did not move the feeders since I moved them two or three weeks ago and didn’t want to confuse the hummingbirds (even though I’ve not seen Hope since Memorial Day). You enjoy your weekend too … I’m sorry to see the heat/humidity return; hopefully your temps have moderated some.

    Linda, that’s a lot of walking!! Yay!
    A good walk is refreshing for the soul. While living in New York I discovered the beauty of walking and thinking. When I had a writing assignment deadline, I’d walk for miles just thinking, mumbling while I brainstormed, and giving myself pep talks. I miss those days and the seeing the interesting things and people on those walks. I wish San Jose is more walker friendly but it’s mainly cars.
    The yellow car is fancy and cool! It’s so shiny.

      Thanks Esther. I am quite behind here and went from the top of Comments first – maybe not a good idea. Seriously behind in Reader again too. It was gorgeous here today, coolish before our 90 degrees again tomorrow. I walked 5 1/2 miles and worked in the yard and house and got here way too late. I do the same thing when I’m walking – I like being by myself because I sometimes let my mind be a blank and other times I’m thinking of future posts or just taking in the scenery along the way. They’re shooting off firecrackers all around me and did so until almost midnight last night; my eyelids are at half mast right now from lack of sleep.
