About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.     A lovely abundance of autumn mums! They always make me think of my great-grandmother, who died when I was 9. Everyone called her Mum.

      I couldn’t tell you which color I liked best Barbara – I guess the pinkish/purple that I used for the header image, but they were all so fresh and nice. I’ve never been able to grow mums – I don’t pinch them correctly as they seem to get leggy, so I’ll just enjoy someone else’s mums. In Canada, much like England, people call their mother Mum, rather than Mom.

        My neighbor usually buys a pot of rust-colored mums for their porch so I enjoy seeing those when I come and go. I just get a pumpkin and some gourds and leave it at that. (No watering needed!)

        I do like the look of the mums, pumpkins and gourds on the porch Barbara. My porch is too small to do that, so I’d have to put it in front of the garage. I do see the squirrels making mischief with whatever displays are put out, from climbing/breaking corn stalks, to biting the pumpkins and gourds before they are decorated. My neighbor used to leave the pumpkin there after Halloween and the squirrels enjoyed going inside and nibbling it.

    The flowers are gorgeous. I haven’t noticed many mum’s around here. Maybe we haven’t decorated for fall yet

      Yes they are so colorful. I usually get photos of mums around the neighborhood, but I was in Dearborn on September 11th on a walk which took me near this big produce market which I knew always had mums, so I stopped here. On my walk this morning, I was surprised how many harvest and Halloween decorations there were already.

    I like the sign that says “13” Michigan Mum’s with Grass! So they are giving out grass with Mum’s now………do they offer papers with that I wonder or a pipe?

    Stunning pictures Linda – my favorite is the first one of course! I’m generally not a big fan of mums because the season is so short if we get an early frost. I noticed big pots of them on sale for $3 outside the grocery store yesterday, so they were either done for or maybe had too much rain?

      Thanks Joni! I’ve never had much luck with mums. The first/only time I got them, probably 20 + years ago, my mom and I drove past a small farm market and they had compact cushion mums out front, maybe three for $10.00. They were beautiful and I went home, dropped off my mom, got some tarps to lay down in the car and returned. It was a Saturday and I pulled out all the annuals as it was late in the year. Planted the mums and later in the week we had a torrential rain storm that was so bad it drenched the roots as the dirt all washed away. They looked horrible and what mums survived were yellow and got leggy, despite pinching them. So, now I enjoy other people’s mum displays in their yard or this big produce market.

        I tried planting them one year too with poor results – but even the few times I’ve bought a pot it lasted like many a week….so big waste of money to me. I did take advantage of the nice weather today to take most of my pots down and wash them up and also pulled up all the tomato plants – I just left the dipladenia pots. Nice to get that done.

        Starting to put the yard “to bed” – a little bit helps rather than everything at once by the time you prune everything down as well. I just was frustrated with the weather, the yard, etc., I just did it on that nice day. We were having rain the next day and had it the Saturday, so I couldn’t paint. Looking ahead, it looks like next weekend, the entire weekend, will be nice. I hope so. It is raining here now and will rain/storm off and on all day tomorrow, maybe Monday and Tuesday too, but in the afternoon. What lackluster weather.

        Just the trim around the door but it has been either too humid or going to rain. I need to get two coats done and having two good weather days in a row is rare anymore!

        I didn’t get any of my outdoor (furniture) painting projects done this summer so I have just given up on it. Woke to rain again, humid all week again,…more of the same.

        Yes, I see myself not getting it done again this year and that is just ridiculous if that happens. But I can’t do it before or after work so that leaves the weekends or long holidays. I am frustrated with the weather to the nth degree.

        I think I will do that too….just a little bit at a time…next the three clematis – lots of greenery there, and then the three regular rose bushes. It’s too big a job all at once. Jays won again today, tomorrow is the last regular game of the season, with four teams all vying for the wild card position, all playing at 3pm. It will be interesting. I managed to get a blog up last week, mostly pictures, but even that is time consuming going through a summer’s worth of shots, and have half a blog done for next week hopefully. Once baseball is over, I’ll get down to blogging more again.

        I walked this morning and did some errands that I knew I couldn’t get done in the morning or I can’t get them all done on one day and I hate losing walking time if I can help it. I didn’t get back until late and didn’t get on here until late. I am going to try and catch up tomorrow. I didn’t come on here last night because I went to bed early. I have not gotten into the “Boston Legal” show, just one episode, nor my book, but I was nodding off typing an e-mail so I went to bed early. I hope we have good weather next weekend – I have one more virtual 5K walk and starts next Saturday.

        Forget Boston Legal – give Downtown Abbey a try – just the first episode some Friday night to see what you think? Some people don’t like period pieces, so it might not be your thing. I’m finding I can stay caught up on Reader most of the time now that I have internet at mom’s, except last week I was behind 6 days, (due to Blue Jays) but caught up quickly as not as many people seem to be posting. I did read your gmail this morning re furnace – sounds like a lemon from day one. Hope it’s sorted out soon. I had furnace checkup done in Sept, but the tech could not diagnose the reason for the howling sound when the blower kicks off – he googled it and said it was “harmonics” from the water flow. That’s the second tech that didn’t know, but as I haven’t had my furnace on at all, I’ll have to wait and see how it sounds. Its worse when it’s not on much, almost like something needs oiling. Now the exhaust fan in the bathroom has quit working, (intermittently) but my grasscutter blew the dust out of it and says he can replace it if need be. It’s always something isn’t it?

        I feel sometimes like “can anything go right?” It has been one thing after another the last few months. Yes, you have issues too and that’s too bad that he can’t figure out and has to Google it and the second one’s not sure – sigh. I will try “Downton Abbey” as I heard from you and others it is very good. I have to give “Boston Legal” another try before abandoning it. I like a drama rather than a comedy show – this was a little fast paced the first show and sorting out characters. L.A. Law it “ain’t” – I loved that show as well as “The Practice” and “Judging Amy” – the good ol’ days for TV.

    Oh the fall beauty you brought us Linda
    And I have not had mums in a while
    I did have some leftovers that still come up on the side – maybe three small ones and there used to be a row of about 15 –
    Anyhow – I think I like the pink/mauve nuns the most in this post

      Glad you liked these beautiful mums Yvette. I was partial to the pink/mauve mums too – they were the prettiest and all open. They must have had a hundred mums at this market. I had small mums and they got “leggy” and drooped, even though I pinched them back, but they did nothing for the yard, so I took them out.
