About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       I almost mentioned that I had a Cheshire cat picture when you had the photo of the mask with the Cheshire cat grin. I took the photo in the neighborhood a while ago and kept it to mark my miles as I trudge on.

        I just may Joni – I really feel I should quit while I am ahead and use up everything I have. I have sorted out and made a grid how I wanted to use those shots through Fall, but I have to go through as I started going out of order. It was nice this morning – hated to come home. I heard we may have our first snowflakes mixed with rain on Tuesday. Noooo!

        Well at least you have a stash to use over the winter. I find I take very few photos once the weather turns colder, as I don’t go anywhere! It was a nice day, but I had errands to run as usually happens when the weather is nice.

        Yesterday was nice – today not so much. And I decided the car needed a run before the snow flies but it is going to rain some tomorrow and late afternoon on Halloween. I despair with this weather. I wanted to get some pictures of the trees but I don’t know if I should bother because the park will be soggy. I likely will walk at my park and just go next week.

        Today was horrible – rained all day, so I decided to walk at the grocery store(s) – got us stocked up again, esp. the freezer. After Sunday it’s supposed to be nicer, but a bit cooler. I don’t do Halloween anymore, so it will be lights out for me Sunday night and probably something on Netflix. Did I tell you I signed up a few weeks ago? I took mom to the foot doctor yesterday and there was the odd tree that had changed along the way and was very pretty, but sometime next week I hope to go to a larger park and get some pictures.

        No, I didn’t know you signed up for Netflix. I know you can sign up to watch/stream on your computer as well. I’ve been jotting down some movies and TV shows I’d like to see later on Amazon Prime. I WAS watching Boston Legal and saw three episodes, then went to watch it two weeks ago and they said Season One was not available, but the other seasons were available. I’m not buying Season One and I wonder if that is because it was the week that William Shatner went into space and there were various interviews about his long acting career and I read his two most-famous roles were on Star Trek (which I’ve never seen) and as Denny Crane, the senior partner on Boston Legal. I’ll try again – going to watch a few movies, then try again. ACG&S will be on again on Sundays in January. I wanted to catch up on Reader tonight as I was three days behind. If it rains tomorrow morning, alot of sogginess and supposed to be quite windy – there go the leaves … sigh.

        Yes I signed up a few weeks ago, and have already watched 3 British movies – the best was The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society – which was based on a book I read several years ago, but the movie was much better than the book as it had quite a few actors from Downtown Abbey in it. The other was The Dig and Sommerland which were just okay. I can also watch Netflix on my computer, but if you get Amazon Prime I’m not sure you need both unless you plan on watching a lot of TV. I haven’t browsed around Netflix enough to see what else is on there yet, just watched the 3 movies my friend had recommended who also likes British dramas. My brother also showed us how to watch youtube on the Smart TV, so I can call up old episodes of Moonlighting and Remmington Steele and mom can watch 29 seasons of Bob Ross painting! I think that might be the issue with Netflix too – things come and go? Anyway it was cheap enough at $18/month, and we have all winter to explore it. Hope you can walk this weekend!

        I have seen a subscription to YouTube advertised and thought about looking into it, but like you said, I’d have to have more time and then maybe no more Amazon Prime. If/when this pandemic ends and life is normal again, I’d consider it. I’d like to see “Curiosity Stream” which sounds very interesting and is just $20.00 a year. I did not know Netflix was just $18.00 a month – that’s a deal and no wonder people are cutting the cable cord. I don’t have a modern TV – mine is from the early 90s, so it would not be compatible with any service I wouldn’t think. I’ve never seen Moonlighting before or Remington Steele either. I remember they were top shows. Your mom will be happy to see Bob Ross any time she wants. I’ve meant to tell you that the Metropark where I go, as well as other Metroparks in SE Michigan, have a class you can take where a “Bob Ross certified instructor” painting class. I didn’t know there was such a thing – the class was $65.00 and you learn how to draw a landscape drawing and take it home with you. They had a bio on the instructor who goes around the state conducting classes. To take a series of classes might run $395.00. Winter is a good time to get it. I’ve been jotting down lots of movies including several with Meryl Streep that I never saw and maybe came out after Blockbuster was gone. I did walk today – how about you? Just a walk in the ‘hood between rains. This weather is not to my liking at all, the entire year. (P.S. – you should see if Mad Men is on Netflix.

        I’m sure Mad Men must be there. Tonight I did a quick look through some of the tv shows on Netflix and marked a few we might watch. We don’t have a subscription to youtube, it just comes up on the Smart tv as an app/icon, just like Netflix is an app/icon you click on and it takes you right into it. I think the youtube subscription just removes the ads that are so annoying on youtube. Some of the tv series shows though are of poor quality as people have just uploaded them to youtube, and sometimes they are taken down in violation of copyright laws. Tonight we watched a new version of the movie Rebecca on Netflix – I never read the novel, but enjoyed the movie – it’s a British production much better than the old 1990’s version. You could get new tv when you retire – mine is 55 inch from 2015 but the smart tv’s have really come down in price since then. I did get the Cogeco guy to hook up the modem to the tv when he installed the internet at mom’s and had a neighbour’s kid do mine at home a few years ago. It didn’t seem that hard, but I figured they know more what they are doing. So you don’t even need to go through the computer now as you did in the early days of Netflix, as the modem just downloads the movies automatically and is connected to the tv.

        That’s interesting Joni – I just assumed it was still connected to your computer to stream. I have a lot to learn for down the road. I just looked and it appears Mad Men pulled out of Netflix a couple of years ago. They are carried by Amazon Prime now. I don’t really understand what IMDB is and when I watch something on Amazon, that name comes up. I know Amazon Prime and IMDB have a partnership, though it does have a separate website and the TV shows and movies are free. But at Amazon Prime, you have to see commercials. Not as many as network TV. That is a big TV – mine is just a 19-inch screen. Many years ago my neighbor/friend Marge got a big screen TV and hooked up her computer monitor to it and could be in e-mail or otherwise on the internet and used her TV screen for that. I can’t remember she said with her Comcast (which she bundled the internet/cable/telephone), if the phone rang, it showed up on computer screen if she was online or on her TV screen if she was watching TV. I walked 6 1/2 miles today – it was a beautiful day finally, but rained here after 5:00 p.m. Went to Heritage Park to see the leaves – they were very colorful and I think I got some nice shots. The Botanical Gardens were open, but 90% of their flowers had been taken away.

        Before I forget Thanks for the e-card! It was cute. We didn’t do Halloween, but when I went down to pick up the Chinese food there were spooks on the street even though it was only 6pm and not dark yet, and not just little kids but bigger ones too, but as it poured rain at 7pm they must have known the forecast. We watched Rebecca (the 2021 version) on Netflix. I know people can hook up their computer to the Smart TV and look at their photos and Facebook on the big screen, but I don’t know how to do that, and am not sure I would want to. There may be a Facebook icon and photo app on the screen but I haven’t checked them all out yet. I’ve never heard of the phone thing though. We went to a waterfront park in search of ducks again – I took tons of pics but few turned out as it was an overcast day, and hardly any leaves have changed. I suspect they will just drop off? It looks like a nice week ahead with lots of sunshine!

        Glad you liked it Joni. I think WNIC is going to flip to Christmas music any day (100.3). They usually do that a couple of days after Halloween. I mention it as you enjoyed listening to that station in the car. The pictures I took for the Halloween post were not so good until it cleared up about an hour later. It finally got sunny out, but I needed to redo all the photos because I knew they’d be too dark. It was nice today, but I had an allergist appointment and 8:00 a.m. worked in the Summer, but not so this time of year. They only have one early day. I had issues with my garage door lock, so had to go to the hardware store for some silicone spray. And to get gas and before I knew it, it was time to get home for work. Happy I can salvage all week (hopefully).

        Thanks Linda….I am so not in the mood for Christmas this year, but I’m sure with a little music I’ll eventually get in the mood. I meant to ask you if your arm was sore or you had an reaction to the Moderna booster? I think you said you got your third shot?

        I got no side effects from the Moderna booster – that was nice and maybe because it was just the half-dose?
        It sure was cold out this morning – I wore a Winter coat. Two weeks ago I am sure I just wore a hoodie and was fine. We have a hard freeze tonight – there goes all the flowers.

        Thanks Linda…..I just finished a blog on oldies but goodies, but not sure if I’ll post it this week or next, as I also finished the duck one too. That’s good you had no reaction. I got my first Shinrix dose today, and so far only have a very minor sore arm. The pneumovax was worse. There is no sign of a third booster here for anyone, but I’ve heard they are going to make everyone wait 6 months from the second dose regardless of age, which would put most people, including me in January, as I can’t see many people going near Christmas, and the majority of people here were done in May/June. It was quite a change in temp this morning, I ran errands and took mom along to see the leaves. When I came home I did a very short walk wearing my mittons and a hat for the first time. I’m sure snow flurries will be here soon, because the sky had that dark gray look to it.

        It is supposed to be nice this weekend. I still have some pantry items I didn’t get as they had limits or were out. I’m thinking if I was prudent, I’d go shopping one more time on Sunday, though the time change will maybe allow me to go in the morning – I hate rushing around though. With the big renovation, they removed the regular check-out for U-scan. I always did my own scanning/checking out, but now they just have the carousel to put the bags on for the U-scan, so it’s not easy if you’re doing a big shopping. I guess I don’t have to go out two days in a row to big parks and they’re likely still flooded from last week. Heritage Park was terrible last Sunday – mud, about an inch, on my shoes and I took a photo of it for the post I’ll (eventually) do. Then, do I really need more pictures? I just need to get away a little and give the car a long run or two. It was very cold and frosty this morning – we had a hard freeze last night. I just got my water off on time.

        I will get the Shingrix shot for sure next year as it is a two-part as you know, so I don’t want to have to go back again in the Winter – besides I am like a pin cushion now with the other shots the last few months. Today they are already scheduling for kids to get their COVID shots and for them it is 1/3 of the adult dose and spaced three weeks apart.

        Tonight I just popped onto Amazon to look for something and out of the corner of my eye I saw the area for Prime Video where they always advertise something and it’s scrolling sideways so you can’t miss it. And I saw “Boston Legal – finish watching it now, just click here” (their words not mine). So I went to Amazon Prime as you just click it and go right to the next episode and didn’t want to mess up the continuity … sure enough, it is back, so this Friday will start back on it – I have 98 episodes to watch. Whew!

        Sorry Linda….I thought you already had the Shingrix shot? I will go for my second shot in March (4 months) when the worst of winter is over. I had a bad night with an arm so sore I couldn’t sleep, and felt achy and unwell today, but it’s cleared up now after 24hrs and some Tylenol. I’m more worried about shingles, as I had it once when I was 50 for a whole month and it was very painful, even though my rash was just a small spot – a whole month of misery where I could only wear sundresses to work as the feel of clothing against my skin made it worse. 98 episodes is a lot to watch – is is any good? Are you enjoying it as much as MadMen?

        No, I had the original shingles shot back in 2014, but not the new-and-improved, two-part Shingrix shot yet. I got the two-part pneumonia shot series: part one in September 2020 and part two in September. I want to get a hepatitis shot eventually too. Cover all my bases. I remember you said you had shingles and Marge had shingles in her eye and scalp. A fellow blogger had shingles in her eyes and has not been blogging in many months while she recovers. She did a quick post to say what happened, but not been back. Very scary, so I will do that next year for sure.

        I’ve had hepatitis B at work, but not Hepatitis A which I should get if I ever intend to travel again. My Hep. B was so long ago, 30 years? that I’ll probably do Twinrix and get both. As you have mentioned before having Hep. A outbreaks in restaurants it would be a good idea. We don’t eat out anymore, but we do get takeout. I also need to get my Tetanus-Diptheria 10 year booster next spring as I garden. It is a lot of shots. Feeling better tonight anyway but a rough 24hours.

        Now I will not be looking forward to the Shingrix shots hearing your ordeal, although my arm was stiff and sore from the two pneumonia shots. I have to make some time to go onto the Wayne County Health Association records and see when I had my TDP booster – I am not a good judge when I had them, nor where. On my individual health insurance before I was on Obamacare, I had to go to Walgreen’s Pharmacy for flu shots – so may have had it there. Then on Obamacare I had to go to CVS for flu shots, so had the pneumonia shot there and the shingles shot at Meijer. But I think you can pay for or view your vaccine record. I got my TDP booster after Robb (boss) fell down his roof – from up top and skid along the shingles as he fell (but did not fall to the ground). He was wearing shorts and cleaning the gutters and went to the doctor who told him to go to the health department and get a tetanus shot right away. He told them he had one – they said find out when, but better get a new one. That prompted me to get one. Yes, you could hit a rusty nail or rip your skin on a rose thorn. The Hepatis deaths here scare me – I’ve not eaten out, nor gotten takeout since 2009. I think we had 32 deaths in Michigan, all from unsafe handling of food (people not washing their hands). I am so behind here. I’ve fallen behind – feel badly to leave early to read my book for 1/2 hour as was my intention and now that we have the time change, I can get out earlier in the morning again, so back to getting up at 5:00 instead of 6:00 as I’ve been doing since it was staying dark until 8:15 a.m. So I have to knock off here earlier – that has affected me watching TV on Friday nights as I struggle to stay caught up here but now that “Boston Legal” is back, I’m going to make the effort again … I made the effort with “Mad Men” – I answered comments and then went to watch it.

        I have a little yellow immunization card that dates back to 1988 when I got the Hep. B at the hospital, but I forgot to bring it with me to the doctors office. But I know my Td is 2010. The nurse said they don’t routinely do polio here anymore as it is almost eradicated other than India and some other country. What book are you reading?

        It used to be you had to go to the doctor’s office for flu shots, then my mom and I went to Kroger (supermarket) as it was convenient. They gave each of us a card, but I never added to it. I used to be so organized back in the day – my former self would have kept better records. They started vaxxing the kids ages 5-11 yesterday. If I had a kid I would not think twice about it, but the say the parents are divided (of course): one third rushed to take their kids; one third are waiting to see if others have reactions and the remaining third refuse to ever get their child the vaccine. Well, I still have three books left from 2019 when I was on a reading tear and read three books, one each at each long holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years). So then this Summer, Meijer had all paperbacks on sale 10% and I decided I had dealt with so many interruptions to my life (car/furnace/plumber/multiple trips to grocery store to get in Winter food because of limitations of buying or not carrying items) that I deserved a treat, so bought five or six more books. I thought that would spur me to read more … so was gung ho to do this and yesterday ordered two more books from Amazon that I heard about on my radio station. So I really need to do this and step away from her a little earlier. I cannot sit here from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. – it is not healthy to sit that much (though I be sitting to read), but need to just step away from the computer, that’s the goal for me. To answer your question, I bought a Danielle Steel book to launch me back into reading as she is easy reading. It is good so far and called “Daddy’s Girl” and is about three sisters who are not similar in the least. Their father is a rancher who dies suddenly – one daughter lived on the ranch, dedicated her life to ranching (huge ranch … of course). So the other sisters return for the funeral, go through his papers and discover their mother, whom they believed died when they were young, gave up the girls and left their father. They thought he was a widower – they are ready to go confront their mother. One sister is not interested to reunite – one is very interested – the other one is wavering. I’m at this point … so I’m at a good part in the book, but night after night, I don’t go back to it. I’m three days behind in Reader, so it won’t happen tonight, nor will returning to “Boston Legal” … I just have to be more regimented.

        The book sounds interesting. It’s been a long time since I read one of her books and I often wonder how she keeps coming up with new ideas. I did read her autobiography about her son who died, and she had a very interesting and somewhat strange life – I think she was married to a convict at one time…..multiple romances, not much common sense! I really only read for an hour before bed, but I enjoy it so much I don’t have any problem turning off the computer or the tv which I seldom watch anyway, unless it’s a movie.

        My mom and I used to reserve some Danielle Steel books at the library and we had a lot of magazines at the time and years ago (’80s/early ’90s) a coworker belonged to a book club, so she always ordered new releases of many authors, so we gave her magazines; she gave us brand-new hardcover books to read (borrow only). So my mom and I read most of the DS books. My mom would be reading and remark to me “oh, here she goes … the flowing blonde hair, the long legs” … this one looks not to be as predictable as the others, so that’s why I picked it. I needed something light. I have to to get back into reading as I enjoyed it … I have to push away from the computer more, I really do. The best Danielle Steel book which was made into a movie was “Fine Things” – it was a favorite of my mom and me. The movie, which I think was a made-for-TV movie was very good.

        I thought that IMD site was just to promote new and older movies with trailers and a bit of info re what’s its about, list of actors etc. Did you mean you could watch on there too – or was that referring to to Amazon Prime? For instance I looked up Rebecca as one of the actresses was familiar but I couldn’t remember her name. Can Amazon Prime movies/shows only be seen on a computer or can you watch it on a TV too? I don’t even have an Amazon account, and I think Netflix will have enough to keep us busy for the weekend, but just curious?

        I thought it just bio too at IMDB but I think it is paired with Amazon because sometimes the commercials are for movies to watch and IMDB comes up. Now, if I go on Amazon, I get a little pop-up of “look what we picked for you based on your interests.” I just Googled and you can watch it on a TV, even a non-SMART TV using an HDMI cable. Also, you can stream it on any device, including tablet or a phone.

The weather is so erratic and iffy anymore that I am trying to get a good cushion of miles in case the weather turns ugly and I just eke out a mile her or there in December like I did one year … we have another few rainy days coming up. Weather has been the bane of my existence as to walking in 2021.

        Snowflakes? Say it isn’t so! We were fine during the nor’easter, although some people had trees fall on their houses. Cape Cod really took a beating. Lots of beach erosion and they cancelled the ferries to the islands.

        I haven’t heard any more of that nonsense today (thankfully). Probably because today’s word is “rain” – the second day in a row. I hope they forget about snow in the forecast, though it will be in the low 20s later this week. Two weeks ago, you didn’t even need a jacket in the morning. I’m glad you lucked out Barbara. I did hear about Cape Cod and then they mentioned Connecticut, so I kept my fingers crossed and knew your little Jay would know where to find you as you and Tim hunkered down. The 2021 weather is not for sissies, that’s for sure.
