About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Yes, our respective steps would be very low if we wore elf shoes wouldn’t they? Thank you Anne and I had concerns about meeting my goal since we had so many bad weather days this year … lots of heavy rain and high winds. How are you and John doing on your miles this year?

        Our mileage took a nose dive several months ago. We used to walk to the creek (2.5 miles) regularly, even with Sadie. John went to the train club in Tennessee twice a month, and I couldn’t handle Sadie going to the creek. I did go to the stop sign, which is half the distance. John began having difficulty breathing, so it has been a couple of months since we went to the creek. Now a new dog has moved into the neighborhood, and Sadie lunges at Rosie. I can’t control Sadie, and she almost pulls me over. Husband and son insisted I not walk Sadie alone. Now I take Sadie out on our street and bring her back before going to the stop sign. I didn’t record walking while Lise was here, and would have helped our stats. I’m proud of you for meeting your goal. Marvelous!

        That’s too bad about the walking tally Anne, but you’ll start again in the new year. You had a lot of things going on this year – your cataract surgery, eye care visits, John’s scare with COVID and lots of visits with family, so the latter is a plus. Too bad about Rosie messing up your morning walks too. Thank you – I’m happy I made my goal because we had a lot of very rainy days and high wind days throughout the Fall. We’ve had snow only twice and it melted the next day – we won’t have a white Christmas, but instead it will rain overnight and throughout a good chunk of the day. The meteorologist quipped that Santa and his elves need ponchos to stay dry delivering the gifts.

      Thanks Barbara – could you imagine walking or hiking in these elf shoes? I don’t think I’d get to the corner in them before they’d be pinching my toes.

        Same here Barbara – I can’t imagine how people walk in them for the elf costumes. We have a Christmas display in our City. It is an indoor display and features the same Christmas village as has been there for half a century. I volunteered years ago to help set it up, but was too tall to volunteer to be an elf. They have (or used to before COVID), a Santa and Mrs. Claus and elves in full elf regalia running around keeping the line in place to see Santa. When this pandemic is over, I’d like to go over and take photos of it and write about how I volunteered there back in the day. I think it would be a fun post.

        I hope I can get over there then Barbara – I think it would be a fun post too. I worked in the candy house and I had to set up the kitchen, conveyor belt and there were candies that were replaced and had to be sewn onto the moving conveyor belt. The elves are moving as they try to make the candies. To my knowledge they use the same displays. I would like to visit after the pandemic or during a weekday when no one is around. It used to be free but I think they charge $1.00 to get in now and this year, you had to book a reservation as they didn’t want too many people showing up. The second floor of this building is where the Model Train Club meets and they have model trains going around the entire floor – that was not there years ago. You are short! I am 5′ 9″ tall and my parents were very short: my father as 5′ 3″ and my mom was 5′ 2″ tall.

        Thanks for the video, Linda, the Fantasyland looks fantastic! It would be fun to take my grandchildren to something like it. One of my sons was into trains so that model train display brought back some sweet memories…

        Yes, I thought it looked fantastic too Barbara. It was even nicer this year as they held a Festival of Trees “walking path” so extra festive. The model train display is left there year around and the members of the club have been going there for years. I saw the nativity scene was in a new place. It used to be in a room all its own and there was a small entrance and once inside, it was totally black except for a star hanging from above which lit up the stable area. I’m glad the video brought some nice memories for you.

      Yes, I’m excited Kate because Christmas Eve and Christmas are supposed to rain and then the beginning of next week we’re getting a sleety mix … I would not want to be scrambling around. I only finished yesterday. The rest of the miles will be gravy as they say and I’ll make a goal of just one more mile (1,257) than this year’s goal next year.

    Congratulations! I just added up my year-to-date mileage. I still have 28 miles to go to get to 1500 miles with 10 days left to run. It’s gonna be close!

      Thanks Laurie! I just finished yesterday – whew! Like you, I figured I was getting close … too close for comfort in getting it done. We are having some rainy days for Christmas Eve/Christmas, then a sleety mix beginning of the week I hope you finish and if you have rain I know you’ll run anyway … good luck and keep me posted okay?

      Thank you Wayne! My furry friends say “most of Linda’s miles are walked here, right near us!” So they approve too and often when I go to bigger parks on the weekend, I stop there first and do a mile loop to walk and feed them.

      Yes, I was glad I finished up early so I got my 1,256 miles (2021 km) in and whatever is left over will be “gravy” – I’ll mention it in a New Year’s post, but will just go one more mile for 2022. I’m not taking on any more challenges like I did the end of 2019 … there were a few times I thought I might not make it due to all the torrential rains we had in the Fall. Luckily Winter weather has stayed at bay. We had some icy roads in mid-Michigan and lots of accidents and I heard that forecast too. A sloppy Christmas weekend forecast.

        It’s a good night to be inside. Just got caught up on Reader, but I didn’t comment much. Watching Scrooge – while I’m reading – CBC is showing a Christmas movie at 8pm every night. Will answer your gmail before I go to bed. I hope you get some time off over Christmas! Is your boss taking a long vacation?

        Take your time, I mostly wrote about the stupid mask issue – I ordered some N-95 masks tonight from Amazon as over here they advise no more cloth masks for now, even though I am not planning on going anywhere to stores, etc. or inside places, just on walks. I haven’t seen an update on when Season two of ACG&S starts. I am going to read some tomorrow and a few hours of TV. I am behind a few days in Reader … three I think now. I am off now until Monday – same as next weekend, but that’s it. My boss was going to Mexico, but cancelled the day before he was to leave (12/22) due to Omicron.

        They are replaying season one on PBS Channel 12 now, but I didn’t like it enough to watch it again. Too bad boss didn’t leave! I managed to buy a few masks at the pharmacy this week, but just singles, and I’m not sure how good they are.

        I just Googled Joni and no wonder they’re replaying season one now – season two starts on January 9th. Maybe I shouldn’t start back on Boston Legal although I watched both series last Winter? I have been fine with cotton and paper mask worn together, but now am concerned, even though I’m outside. No one else masks up. I figured I should order them before more people got the idea and they went on backorder.

        I do and I thought you subscribed to them because there was a show they said was similar to Downton Abbey which started a week or so ago and I figured you watched it. (Hard to remember to leave the “w” out of Downtown, like misspelling “omicron” like “omni” … they pronounce it different ways too.

        I’ll have to re-subscribe. They had Bridgerton (sp?) on but I didn’t watch it as I heard mixed reviews about it, and I wasn’t sure I won’t to commit to another series when I had the project to work on. I think I misspell both! Signing off now, good night and get some reading done!

        I can always forward what I get … since I don’t have TV, I didn’t unsubscribe and I need to find the link before the 9th as it took me right to the part of their site to live stream. I am signing off shortly – will see how behind I am in Reader. P.S. – I would not know how to have everything come out of the oven simultaneously – good thing I have the crockpot as I can’t mess it up.

        I just sent you the last e-mail I got from PBS … it came from an actual e-mail address so I think you can just subscribe that way. I think it was Bridgerton (sp?) they said was so similar to Downton Abbey (and maybe same writers?) and I should have forwarded it to you – I thought you watched a lot of PBS so would know. It was on Netflix too.

        I was wrong Bridgerton is by Rhonda ? somebody who also writes and produces Gray’s Anatomy and a bunch of other shows. It’s set in Regency England 1812 and I’ve heard quite racy – lots of bed hopping. It’s not a time period I have much interest in, and I never was a Gray’s fan. The Julian Fellowes series that we tried to watch was The English Game which is about the history of soccer/football in England, but I found the first two episodes so boring that we didn’t watch any more…..and the Scottish/British accent too hard to follow. Bunch of guys in funny vintage uniforms playing soccer – and the class divide between the classes, poor and rich. You should just try one episode of Downton Abbey to see if you like it – we were hooked right from the start. It starts in 1912 with the sinking of the Titanic and the heir to the estate. Long day – will reply to your gmail tomorrow.

        I hope Downton Abbey is still there when I’m ready to watch it. I will wait until next Summer I think now … have a lot to do in the house and I have to get used to Windows 10 before June 2022 as that is when Microsoft pulls the plug on Internet Explorer, the only browser I can use to remote into work. So I have to get acclimated to Windows 10 – not easy when it is on the top of the stove as I have very few plugs in the house and nowhere else to plug it in. I always was fascinated with the Titanic. I wish I had gone to see the collection of relics when it was at a nearby museum.

      Thanks Tom … I will be posting my final tally on December 31st, but will just set a goal of just one more mile than this year’s goal (1,256 miles/2,021 km). I was a slacker today as it rained. 🙂
