About Linda Schaub
This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

92% dark chocolate! That’s some heavy-duty indulgence.

Yes, a square a day is supposed to be good for your heart, so I indulge away! I found some Lindt 100% chocolate squares but they were too bitter to be enjoyable.

that pile would stick around my place for a long time as I do not like dark chocolate!

I actually never cared for the dark chocolate when I began eating it, but I heard a square a day of dark chocolate was good for your heart, so I stuck with it. I did try Lindt 100% chocolate squares – highest cacoa content, but it was way too bitter and not enjoyable at all!

I prefer milk chocolate but any port in a storm!

I actually prefer milk chocolate too, but I read a square a day of dark chocolate was good for the heart and heart disease runs in my family, so I figured it was a good reason to eat it. Anything over this percentage of cacoa is bitter (but better for you).

I am glad to see you bought yourself some treats, since you always treat your furry and feathered friends!

Yes, my own treat Laurie – been eating a square a day of dark chocolate since I read it was good for your heart (though it is high in fat content) … scratching my head on that one. It gives me a reason to indulge. 🙂

Although I can no longer eat chocolate I do miss those days when I could indulge! I’ve always preferred dark chocolate. It’s nice they package it in small squares so you don’t have to resist the temptation to eat a whole chocolate bar is one sitting. 😉

I am sorry chocolate is off limits for you Barbara. It is nice that the squares are packaged separately – I agree with you as it is easier to have willpower that way. I actually gave up sweets for Lent about a decade ago and did not eat sweets for several years. But I kept reading about the dark chocolate being good for you, so I started a square-a-day regimen. I tried the 100% dark chocolate, but it is a little too bitter for me.

I have 92% Ghirardelli in my cabinet and i only ate two the other day. Now i have a stinking red acne pimple. I guess indulging isn’t meant for me! 🙄

How odd that happened to you Tom. I gave up sweets for Lent one year and ended up not returning to eating any sweets. But after I read that the high-cacoa chocolate is good for your heart, I started this one-square-a-day regimen a couple of years ago.

Had no idea they made 92% cacao
I like the 80% “okay” but prefer lily’s with stevia
But those sure look good!

Yvette – Ghiradelli makes several types of the dark chocolate in the high cacao (80% – 90+%)and some are made with raspberry or cherry or nuts, even sea salt … I just got the plain 92%, but due to supply chain issues when I was stocking up, I had to get a few bags of 86% and you can really taste the difference as they’re not bitter in the least. I bought Lindt in a bar and you break off the smaller squares and it was 100% but way too bitter to enjoy. Are you still making your own chocolate sometimes?

I’m with Yvette on this, Linda; had no idea Ghirardelli made their squares so close to 100% cacao. Not sure where I can buy the extra-dark to be honest. Your “86% not tasting bitter in the least” comment brought a smile. I don’t think the milk-chocolate lovers would agree (and I guess I’m one of them since I hover in the 70’s). But like weaning sugar out of my coffee I’ve learned to love chocolate’s higher percentages, especially factoring in the health benefits.

Yes, Ghiradelli has a wide selection of chocolate with high % cacao Dave. You can check the dark chocolate selection out at their website and you can buy them from Amazon too. I got mine in the grocery store. The Lindt 100% cacao was just too bitter in my opinion. I started the one-square-a-day regimen after hearing the Heart Association tout dark chocolate to keep your heart healthy and heart disease runs in my family, so it was a good excuse to try it. I admit dark chocolate has to grow on you a little if you’ve always had milk chocolate, but now I like it and wouldn’t stray to the dark, er … light side again. 🙂

Hi Linda
It sounds like you know exactly the brands and cocoa ratio you like.
I make the chocolate treats once in a while.
ALDIs store (not sure if you have them there) had an 85% cocoa one that my husband buys and I like it okay – but I have not craved much Chocolate at all in the last handful of months (and seriously I wonder if the times I did crave it maybe I needed minerals or something nutritional??)
Instead – the last two months I have made these keto mini pancakes as snacks
Super easy and so good
Almond flour
Eggs
Stevia
Walnuts
Dash of baking soda
Avocado oil
Bit of water
—
Make the batter (thickness changes)
And lightly fry in Nutriva organic shortening
They make a great dessert and can be warmed next day in air fryer
I will try and blog about them sometime soon

Hi Yvette – this sounds like a delicious treat – nice option if you are craving chocolate. I gave up sweets back around 2010 for Lent, then just stayed off sweets after that. I used to give up something every year for Lent, then stop eating it … but there were no more treats and that was dull. I have never returned to fried food or fast food and as for salty snacks, I just have whole grain Goldfish crackers. I actually was eating this for good heart health and they recommend three of these squares a day for a serving, but I only have one. I will give them up for Lent.
