About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.         I agree with both you and Peggy Dave. This was the area that was full of ducks and shad just a few weeks ago – I didn’t see them that day, nor today when I walked. Bob Ross would have made Council Point Park look picture perfect in one of his paintings.

      Glad you liked that photo Peggy – how different that scene was from the last time I stood there and captured the photos of the ducks and the shad. I finally made it back to the Park this morning. I went last Saturday, but then we had snow and it was so icy at the Park on Saturday, the snow would be covering up the icy patches, so that would be dangerous and I didn’t go. But today, I got there and it was warmer – now we await this two-part ice and snow extravaganza that is coming tomorrow/Friday.

        Winter seems to be haning on. We are expecting bad storms today. Winds up to 40 mph and possibly tornadoes. Temps will be cold tonight and tomorrow. Mother Nature is letting everyone have it. Stay safe.

        I thought of you this morning when I heard the weather forecast on the national news – possible tornadoes in Eastern Arkansas. Then other news stories took over that weather story during the course of the day and I heard no more. I hope you remained unscathed by any tornadoes … we had the 40 mph wind yesterday and I was glad it was then and not today with the freezing rain. It is snowing hard now (an inch an hour) and 30+ degrees colder than it was this time yesterday. Mother Nature has been especially fitful in February!

        We lucked out here. The bad weather got worse East of us in Mississippi. Lots of trees down here, rain and wind anf some power outages. Will be 70 Monday then down hill all week to cold winter weather. Guess that crazy ground hog was right. Ha Ha

        We need to get some Groundhog Helper to use with that groundhog. Glad to hear you lucked out tornado-wise – those high winds wreak havoc to trees and power lines. I never remember having high winds so often as this last year. We have a high wind advisory tonight starting at 9:00 p.m. That snow last night was heavy as it had freezing rain in it as well – we got 6.8 inches of snow.

        Wow that heavy snow breaks the trees down. Ice storms are a common problem in Arkansas in the winter. Arkansas never use to have the wind problems we have now. Yes, that silly groundhog needs a helper.

        I guess the high wind is another byproduct of climate change? We had high winds, swirling and drifting snow and windchill in single digits – because of that and the ice, no walk for me today. A friend on Facebook lives in Bryson City, North Carolina and said she has Snowdrops and Daffodils out. We have a long way to go for that nicety.

      I agree Andy – it makes all the difference in the world when you have a blue sky and sunny day – then Winter can be tolerable. It is this ice we have had for the last few storms and we’re getting an ice storm tomorrow before another big dumping of snow. I’m looking forward to Spring and more stable weather.

      Jeanine – we’ve had a really gray and gloomy Winter too and another ice/snowstorm coming tomorrow. When the sun is shining and you have blue skies in Winter it makes Winter so much more tolerable! (These pics were after 9.2 inches/23 cms of snow.)

    Bill and I ran in the snow last week after the winter storm. Even I (an avowed winter-hater) had to admit it was beautiful. The snow is mostly gone now, which is how I like it. I bet that little black squirrel in the first photo was chilly!

      I am like you Laurie – the snow can be pretty but keep it away. We had some powdery snow fall Sunday night – it was a squall and caused a 50-car pile-up on the expressway. These pics were after 9.2 inches of snow fell – today we got to 50 degrees and the ice finally melted out of the driveway after over two weeks. It was treacherous – too cold to put melting pellets down. Tomorrow we get that new ice/snow storm, so walking goes on hold again. Yes, that squirrel was up there near the snow – should have stayed tucked in his nest!

        Oh, no! Stay warm, Linda. On our run today (it was 60 degrees) I saw some little yellow snow flowers in south-facing flower beds. Yay for spring!

        Yes, it is ugly out there Laurie … we had that warmth yesterday and tonight we have a real feel in negative numbers! The snow is falling at one inch per hour and laced with ice. Tomorrow morning will be interesting. I’m on the lookout for snow drops which I see on the route I take to the Park – a first sign of Spring for me once I see them. First, the snow will need to melt. I am ready for any sign of Spring!

      It is pretty when it is newly fallen snow – there was only one person besides me that day and it was a few days after the 9.2 inches of snow we got. We were supposed to get more and thankfully dodged that bigger bullet. Now we have another ice/snow storm coming in tomorrow/Friday time frame. I’d take California in a heartbeat over the ice/snow! Yes, that cute black squirrel had grabbed a peanut and went up to the tip-top of the tree to enjoy it by himself. 🙂

    It’s good to have snowy scenes in winter. I fear they may become scarce. We got a tiny bit of snow here today.

      I used to live in Canada and we lived on crescent part of the street. That “bend” seemed to get all the blowing and drifting snow and my father would go out to go to work in the morning and his VW Beetle looked like an igloo as it was so snow-covered.

    The sun can be so bright and cheerful in February! ☀️ Every time it comes out between storms it offers more and more the promise of spring. I love the long winter shadows you captured, especially in the last picture.

      Yes, the sun makes you forget how brutally cold it might be. Thank you Barbara – the shadows make it interesting sometimes and I almost used that last picture up top – I was torn which one to use. We had another bitter cold day, swirling and drifting snow and I didn’t walk due to the freezing drizzle we had before the 6.8 inches of snow on Thursday night. The ice finally melted Thursday morning in my driveway after three weeks, then we got another wintry mix. I am ready to move along to Spring, or at least to March!

        Hang in there! We had snow squalls yesterday and some pretty impressive wind. Temperatures swinging from below to above average every couple of days…

        We’ve had that wind two days now and those same temperature changes – the weather is beyond weird. Yesterday was bitter cold in single digits with blowing and drifting snow from the high winds (40-45 mph) so likely you had that today. Today, not even 24 hours later, it got to almost 50, but still icy with winds 40-45 mph, so I couldn’t walk (too dangerous even with no ice).

      Thanks Joni – it was a pretty day at Council Point Park, despite the path not being plowed or salted. I walked where a truck had smashed down the snow, otherwise I’d have been high-steppin’ it through that high snow. That was the Sunday after our storm on Groundhog Day. The walking regimen is not faring well and it looks bleak this coming week as well. I’m not sure I’d go tomorrow, even mid-day, as we got so much ice the other day.

    Such beautiful pictures Linda, wasn’t the ice gorgeous? It looked like thousands of diamonds covering all of our trees glistening in the sunlight all day long. They were like prisms with all the color, just gorgeous!

      Yes, we had a real sunny morning the next day and I could see that ice glistening on the bare branches while I was shoveling – I was glad the ice was not thick, so no power line issues – whew! I sure hope we are done with Winter soon!
