About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

JP – you would be surprised how many steps you rack up without actually going onto a trail and would be proud of yourself. I heard the other day that three miles (6,000 steps) a day is now considered adequate for good health, not the five miles (10,000 steps) promoted earlier. I am about 50 miles less than last year at this time thanks to the weather – in 2020 on National Walking Day I was at 323, almost 100 miles more than today.

I hope Forest Gump had better weather than I’m having Wayne as I will have to push myself the rest of the year to get it done. I’m willing, but Mother Nature has been a bit of a tool since January 1st!!

I’ll be more inclined to go out if it rains (not torrential) once it warms up. This rain, wintry mixes – not fun to deal with and slippery to walk on. We have wintry mixes over the next two days. I would like the weather I grew up with – guess that is not going to happen anytime soon.

In other words we forget about the days that had excellent weather but do remember the days that we had bad weather!

This is very true Wayne – in this year, the good days have been few and far between. Today we had rain, rumbles of thunder, supposed to have hail (which I don’t think happened) and tonight a wintry mix. We have to grab the good days and run with them going forward.

Ally, I’m waiting for the cold and wintry or rainy weather to exit, then we’ll get that sickening hot and humid weather, but I will not complain about it (oh no I won’t) after this Winter that doesn’t know when to quit!

How do your 2022 stats compare to 2021? I bet you will be able to make up some ground this spring!

I sure hope our weather improves Laurie – the weather has hindered me since that snow/ice storm we had on New Year’s Day. I said “abysmal” as I had 280 miles on National Walking Day (first Wednesday in April) in 2021. I have 234 miles this year. And in 2020, I was doing great with 323 miles (90 more miles than I currently have). Friday and Saturday will be crummy, but the weatherman said “we’re turning a corner folks – next week is better.” I peeked – it’s still rainy and one or two days we have winds 45-50 mph – but it’s warmer at least. Not a corner I like! I will be pushing myself to get ‘er done and will not be complaining about the heat and humidity. 🙂

I am sure you will “get ‘er done”. Your record-keeping is admirable. Rainy and warm here today, Linda. I bailed on a planned run this morning. If it doesn’t stop by mid-afternoon, I might just go out in the rain. I guess I won’t melt!

Thanks Laurie – I see no evidence of the weather turning a corner next week as they predict. I’m going to have to walk in the rain if it doesn’t get better. At least dealing with rain on a warmish day is not as bad as a cold day. I admit I won’t melt either!

I keep hearing about this corner we are turning weather-wise, but looking ahead to next week (and that supposed corner), I see only one nice day, Monday – SMH. Everyone is aflutter about Opening Day tomorrow as we will have rain, a thunderstorm and hail during the course of the game. They likely won’t postpone it as it will be ugly on Saturday as well. That seagull with his foot in the air made me smile – perfect for National Walking Day. I just got that shot last Saturday at Heritage Park and got some funny waterfowl shots to share on upcoming Wordless Wednesdays.

Yes, it was unusual seeing a seagull picking up his foot like that Zazzy. I had another picture slated for National Walking Day, then saw this seagull last Saturday at Heritage Park and decided to use him instead. Last year we had similar weather to this year with lots of ice and snow in January, but this year Winter has lingered on. We are having a wintry mix overnight/tomorrow morning again. I feel lucky to get out in the morning with no rain or snow or very high winds and it rained coming home from today’s walk. Since 2011 through 2019, I had set a goal each year of just one more mile than the last year. That was good for me, but then in 2019, a fellow Canadian blogger challenged me to do the same amount of kilometers as the new decade (2020), so I did (though reluctant to do so as it was quite a bit more miles and I know my limitations with the seasons, time change and I don’t walk after work and I’ve never been big on walking in the rain). So it’s good to have a goal, but this bad weather makes that goal seem more difficult to reach.

Yep – the first Wednesday of April every year is National Walking Day Dave and that’s when I usually post my miles for the first quarter. My stats were bad and with a week of rain coming up, won’t look to improve much. I had another picture picked out but I saw that seagull when walking at Heritage Park last Saturday and knew it would be perfect for National Walking Day. I follow a site here on WordPress that has all the national holidays. Some are odd holidays and a lot of them pertain to food/beverages. I will put the link in a separate comment for you to get a smile.

He looks like he’s strutting his stuff! It has been a bad year walking wise. I’ve given up for the most part until it gets warmer. I’m tired of chilly weather after a cold winter.

Yes he does Joni. I had another picture picked out, then saw this seagull last Saturday at Heritage Park and decided to use it instead – it worked perfectly. The weather is wreaking my walking regimen – Sunday is nice and then a week of rainy days again. Yes it will be warmer, but then we revert to colder weather again! A bad Winter, an ugly Spring and I suppose it will be a hot and humid Summer. Better than ice and snow I guess.

Diane – our weather this year has been a little worse than last year which is holding me back. We had the same snow and ice as last year, but wintry weather has lingered far too long. Today was beautiful though. I did a long walk at Lake Erie Metropark, then came home and worked in the yard. I am not going to last too long tonight with all the fresh air. That seagull cracked me up with his walk – you’re right, a definite two step as he walked on the seawall. 🙂

Hi Linda – NO I didn’t do the walk in our area – been super busy this month (finalizing house projects) and I even took a break from regular yoga class (also just needed a break to recover a bit from getting back in yoga shape – )

and I might have thanked you already on my blog – but Linda – I really really appreciate some of the extras you bring to posts – like recently sharing about Great Van Fleet on the Led Zeppelin post!

Wow – you will make my head swell Yvette. I try to follow trends on social media and pay attention to pop culture, old and new. It is funny that sometimes in blogging people bring up topics and I remember stories that happened long ago and are embedded in my brain, but it is fun to dredge them up and share them … some stories are evergreen forever. Was there an event associated with the water charity your son is working with – I was thinking that was a walk/run as well if memory serves me right.

        Hi Linda!
My son did the water outreach on his own –
No walk and no run. He did the outreach first when he was 20 and at that time – my spouse and some other family had just finished the book by the founder of charity water – I guess he used to be a big party guy and set up parties for folks – that led to emptiness and then eventually to his huge outreach with “charity water” –
And a couple of years ago – someone very generous donated a huge amount if bitcoin to charity water and that was cool!

Anyhow – I know what you mean about how some stories are forever and certain things stick with us – (I also see I have a short memory for some things – must not have stored it properly to begin with eh?)

I have that short-term memory gap too sometimes Yvette. I like that concept that it was not stored properly to begin with! Made me smile. When the Salvation Army kettles go out every year, there is a person who puts a large gold Krugerrand coin into one of the kettles anonymously. There are worth a couple of thousand dollars. This has happened for years here.

Yes, people anticipate it will happen every Christmas Yvette, so they make a big fuss over it, though the donor always deposits it anonymously. It’s a good organization to contribute to – they do a lot for their fellow man.
