Time to fête the fathers in our life for their special day.
My Mother’s Day post was all about Mama Goose – first, her nest brimming with eggs and then her five sweet goslings. How could I top that?
And more importantly, could I find a few critter pics (besides geese or squirrels) to use for Father’s Day? Voila! While on a recent outing to Heritage Park for a virtual 5K and on an intense search for Mallard munchkins, I spotted a few turtles sunning themselves on some rocks. Fortunately they didn’t slide off the rock and plop into Coan Lake like they usually do, so I happily clicked away with the camera. Driving home, the ideas were percolating about how these turtles would become my Father’s Day post. I put my thinking cap on to come up with some fun captions.
Happy Father’s Day! There’s a special message at the very end of this post.
This is Dad. Dad was content to bask in the sun on his special day.But then the kids showed up. Dad thought “maybe if I close my eyes, they’ll leave me alone.”
The eldest cried out “Hi Pop, it’s your day so I brought a treat.” Dad said “Son, I hope you didn’t bring turtle soup like last year!”
Oops – it looks like Dad pushed one of the kids into the water.
This kid decides to schmooze a little, putting his head on Dad’s shoulder/shell.
When his sibling similarly clamors for Dad’s attention, the firstborn tries to kick him off the rock.
Yep, with one swift kick, he cast aside his brother – yay, now he’s got Dad’s ear.
“We saw what you did there – we’re back! Did someone say they brought turtle pie? Um – please define turtle pie as I ain’t eatin’ no kin!”
A grumpy Dad channeled Clint Eastwood and told his kids to get off his rock.
“Okay Dad – next time we’ll just visit Mom, but wait … Mom looks grumpy too!”
This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I was at this park again today Yvette and it was sunny, so the turtles were all sunning themselves again. I went for duckling photos and saw one family.
Yes, you can have a little too much of a good thing sometimes. We didn’t have a great Spring, so today when I stepped out of the house at 49 degrees, it felt like Spring or Fall.

You’ve got that right Kate – a meeting of the turtle clan! At Council Point Park the turtles gather on a fallen log in a neat line and if they see a human, they plop into the water right away. Same thing at the bigger parks as there is always fallen trees for them to sunbathe on. This is the only park where I see them sunbathing on rocks or the little metal ramp they put for them to sit on.
I don’t often get a picture of the turtles on a log due to the bushes along the Creek shoreline, so I can’t get close. If one sees you, he immediately plops into the water and the others follow, like the domino effect.
Glad you liked it Laurie … I had a lot of fun with my Mother’s Day card after discovering the goose eggs, so I knew I had to give equal time to Father’s Day. The gull, like Jonathan Livingston Seagull, cruising the skies.
Very cute pictures and loved the video at the end! I would love to just see a turtle once – although I saw one crossing the road once, someone’s pet on the loose, it was too far away to really see.
Thanks Joni! I was hoping to find a turtle Father’s Day card but no such luck and I like gulls, so I went that route. Usually the turtles I see at parks are sitting lined up in a neat row on fallen logs and they plop into the water if humans get too close, but here they cluster on big rocks in Coan Lake. Heritage Park even made them a metal mesh ramp to go in/out of the water.
I’m envious. I’m also mad. I wanted to watch Hotel Portofino the new PBS series Episode one on tonight at 8 and the tv station was all cut up with pixels, with a sign on it saying Cogeco was experiencing technical difficulties etc. Same message when I called Cogeco. I remember you saying you watched ACG&S online. Do you have to create an account or could you just watch it? Does the account require just signing up or do you have to pay for the service? As I missed episode one then I won’t know the characters. It’s set in 1920’s in a hotel on the Italian Riveria, a British couple runs a hotel etc. Kind of like Downton Abbey but six episodes. Of course at 9pm when it was over the station cleared up!!!!
I would be mad too. No, I didn’t have to sign up for an account or pay for it. But, if I recall, I could only watch it live and if I missed it you had to be a member. I will give you the link in a separate comment because maybe they run the episode again later today without having to pay for it. I will put it in a separate comment in case it goes to SPAM. And yes, that is always the way. I can remember us taping movies a few times – Sunday night at the movies, while watching something else, then later to find out the CBS Sunday night football game ran over and it didn’t pre-empt Sixty Minutes, so it cut off the movie’s ending. We didn’t always watch the taped movies until Summer, when other series were on hiatus … annoying!! Going to send the link now.

Hope you had some luck Joni for a rebroadcast on PBS. I looked to see if I could find a rebroadcast somewhere – found many re-caps of Episode 1. Thanks Linda….I can probably pick up the storyline with episode two. Portofino is where they filmed Enchanted April, another period piece which I loved. I checked on youtube and episode one was posted by several people but you had to subscribe to their channels. I don’t know how people get away with that when they don’t own the copyright? I hope your day goes better.
I fished the link to the recap out of trash and put it back but it was an earlier comment, so will send it again. I actually subscribe to several YouTube channels of fellow bloggers, and an art how to, but truthfully I don’t go to any of them, as I just have run out of time.
You can unsubscribe after you watch it – it doesn’t show up in your e-mail. I was subscribing to “Jared the Camera Guy” to try to learn manually how to use the DSLR – you just go to one corner of YouTube and watch it there. You don’t get notices or anything.
Thanks Linda. It asked me to create an account which I did, but after I selected my station, Detroit Public Television, it did not allow me to watch the video without signing up for Detroit Public Television Passport, which is a minimum donation of $60. That gives you access to past shows. And it says livestreaming which is what you do is not available in Canada, as they do not have the rights to livestream in Canada. Oh well, I can wait and hopefully obtain the DVD at some point from the library. I’ll watch episode two next week and see if I can pick up the storyline if it’s worthwhile – it’s only six episodes anyway. Thanks again for your effort!
Joni – You’re welcome and I’ll send this quick note before I start work … first I had a link for a a recap on U.S. magazine – it told who was who, then I discovered the live stream, so deleted the recap. I’ll find it again and send it to you tonight … you’ll at least get the gist of the plot and know the characters. It didn’t dawn on me that Canada would not be allowed to stream … I know European bloggers could not view videos that American bloggers post.
Ps. When I first clicked on the player it said video unavailable and then I went through the rest. I’ve often thought of making a donation when they are soliciting online – there was a set of oldies but goodies CD’s once that I wanted, but when I went online it had sold out. I guess I want something for my donation!
He sure did his best Barbara! Before my very eyes, he stuck his leg out and the other turtle fell off the rock into the water! Sibling rivalry happens everywhere. 🙂
That’s a good question JP. I’ll bet the going gift for turtles would be a heavy-duty moisturizer for that leathery skin or Turtle wax to polish up the dull shell (like Pop has). 🙂

Glad you liked them Ruth. These turtles really like sunning themselves on the big rocks once it warms up outside. Most of them have their eyes closed, enjoying the sun’s rays, just like a human.

I sure hope next week is better Shelley! I did walk about six miles this morning – went down to take pics of some cars on the street and found none, so figure less people due to gas prices. The cars go in a continuous loop through three cities all day long. I did find a group of parked cars which was fun so I checked them out instead. We have storms off and on tomorrow which is not good as I’m already horribly behind in Reader.
I hope this week is going well for you! I had to jump right into work and am with you on the behind in Reader stage.

Well the work you’re doing on the rentals is as strenuous as doing yard work Shelley, so you feel every muscle that you pulled doing it but it is good exercise. It is supposed to be cooler for the weekend and now maybe some rain for the 4th of July. It’s getting pretty dry here, so rain will be welcomed. You stay cool too!

Shelley – i had to jump on here this morning. I just heard a medical article about the 10-second mortality rule and standing on one leg for 10 seconds – yay I passed … I don’t recall which comment you made that. I was very behind, here in comments. Sigh. Happy I will live longer, but knocked a couple of years off my life with centipede at large in the house this a.m. – spiders and centipedes = my nemesis.
Yay for passing the test! Do it every day and lengthen the time to help build your core muscles.
Yikes on spiders and centipedes. I’ve been thinking about you – we’ve been invaded by ants several times. We found this new spray that kills them instantly and is safe for humans and pets. It’s called STEM.
Yes, I was happy about passing the 10-second test Shelley and I will do that and lengthen the time standing like a flamingo … for the cause. I never saw the centipede again and am uneasy knowing it lurks here somewhere. Today, I was out in the woods and kept feeling like something was near my left ear or side of my face. I was nowhere near a mirror or a glass where I could look at my reflection. Finally I could stand it no longer, so took my left hand and felt it, plucked it off my ear and saw it had big legs – I threw that thing so fast … I’m guessing a spider and I am terrified of them. I don’t know what else it could have been. I was by myself, so I couldn’t ask anyone what it was before I grabbed it.
Yikes – I’m not a fan of spiders either. The floating spiders (for lack of the right term) can land on you anywhere. Good you tossed it away and moved on from it.
Yes, did the flamingo stance again this morning – keeping one foot off the ground in case of running critters as I was all aflutter, with another centipede in the bathroom this morning – ugh. And it was not the same one; this one was medium sized. We’ve not had rain (although predicted) which might bring in centipedes, but we are going to get slammed tonight with what you are experiencing today (they said). I’m very scared of spiders and centipedes and to have had one on my head/face freaked me out, but yes, I moved on and decided maybe I have to carry a small mirror with me going forward so I can see what lands on me in the forest. 🙂 (Hopefully not a banana slug – have you ever heard the “Discover the Forest” commercials Shelley?)

We have slugs here, but not like the size of a banana slug! Yikes.

Our slugs aren’t that big either Shelley – yikes indeed! I had slugs one year so bad I bought (and bought into the idea) soapstone mushroom slug killers from Gardener’s Supply Company. You filled them with beer and buried them 1/3 into the garden soil and the had this passageway the slugs could slide into as they were attracted to the yeast in the beer. SUPPOSEDLY they would die, but no, no dead slugs and you had to rinse out, replenish their beer supply every day or so. They ate my hostas and other perennial leaves and I spent a small fortune on Sluggo. I see their iridescent trails on sidewalks in the morning if the sun hits it just right.
They are the ugliest things, but move slow, so I deal with them … things that move faster than me, I stand and panic what to do and dance around how to kill them. Before I bought those beer slug traps, I researched that idea and yes, it was recommended, but it was a lot of work and rinsing out all the canisters … whole yard smelled like beer. 🙂 You can also buy flat copper wire to put around each plant or make a circle of pennies around each plant. The slug’s moist body makes contact with the metal and is zapped. I just looked and the wire tape is available on Gardener’s Supply and they have a different type of slug beer trap than I had which had only one good review.
I’m not a fan of fast moving bugs either. We could do a spider dance together!! LOL.
Interesting, I’ll have to look into more garden supply places. The scoundrels in my yard are winning the battle this year without Copper’s scent in the yard to scare them off.
Yes we could – in the wee hours of the morning when I turn on the light and see a centipede I will let out a scream. The windows are closed … woe is me if I ever have a burglar in here and let out a loud scream. Not that anyone would come to my aid but they’d say “ho hum, another centipede or spider is lurking in Linda’s house.” Yes, try something to keep those pesky pests away … I have heard that people plant Marigolds and I did that one year to keep the slugs at bay. It’s hard to say if it helped as I was also going through containers of Sluggo and the beer treatment simultaneously. I subscribed to “Birds and Blooms” for years and I believe it was their recommendation to surround each plant with small Marigolds – they don’t like the smell. Either did I.
If the bugs scurry when you scream, that’s a win! LOL.
My mom and her husband subscribed to Birds and Bloom too – they did have nice gardens and pesky bugs were treated by professionals. I should do more research. The dang rabbits are eating the tiny marigold sprouts – they must not stink enough at that stage? I think the baby rabbits have to eat some bad food once to learn, by then it’s too late and my flowers are gone. Sigh.
I follow Birds and Blooms on FB … kind of funny as I really have no flowers except the hydrangeas and roses now, but I see articles on there and click “save” – something else for the golden years I guess. I’m mixed about starting another butterfly garden – I still have the houses which I never took out again after I lost all the perennials and butterfly bushes (all three) after the Polar Vortex in 2013/2014. I am not so sure I want a garden like I had before with all the perennials. I lost them once and don’t aim to lose them again. The weather is too hot and erratic and getting worse. So after work today, I was on FB and what is in my feed but an article on rabbits and rabbit-resistant flowers and other hints? The article was posted today but dated in March of this year. I know you have to approve links Shelley, so I’m going to send it in a separate comment.
I’m a fan of perennial gardens that require very little on my part to keep them going. But, it is a lot of work too. My MIL spends hours weeding and maintaining – those hours are when I’m at work. LOL.

Perennial gardens are better than annuals which I think are high maintenance. I would never return to the amount of annuals I had before. I hand watered every morning before I left for work and some of the annuals were “needy” and I watered them again at night after work. When I wasn’t watering, I was weeding, deadheading or fertilizing – it never ended. Every year my mom asked me why I wanted to give myself the extra work and I said “it looks nice” yet neither of us sat anywhere to see that back/side/front gardens – only Marge saw it. Hope the link helps – what a coincidence it was reposted again on a day we had been talking about it.
Yes, they are a lot of work. I water my plants once or twice a day. Normally it’s a nice excuse to get some doses of nature and Vitamin D. This year with the scoundrels eating the flowers before they bloom it’s been slightly depressing. I’m thankful for the post, and shall keep it for a reference, thanks again for sharing.

Thanks Ally. I saw this scenario and decided it was perfect to weave in a little Father’s Day tale. That was the grumpiest-looking turtle. The smaller turtles were clamoring to sunbathe with him – he wasn’t interested.
Me too Zazzy. I had a pet turtle when I was about ten years old. His name was “Murtle” (or would that be “Myrtle”??? He lived in a plastic dish with a palm tree on the elevated platform. That was a clever name for your group. These turtles love sunning on the rocks. The turtles at the Park where I walk every day line up on logs for their sunbathing.
I had a stuffed turtle named Myrtle as a kid! I also had a turtle in one of those plastic dishes with the plastic palm and elevated platform. I think my father decided he needed to live free, after he had died. I was a little kid at that point.
Say high to your turtle friends for me. They look like they are really enjoying the sunshine.
I almost put in my last comment that I thought all kids had a turtle in a plastic dish, elevated platform and plastic palm tree. 🙂 I never had a stuffed turtle. Funny they both had the same name too.
Will do – they like lounging there in the sunshine by the covered bridge. There is another group of rocks by the water mill, but they’re smaller and they slide off and go into the water if anyone comes near.
Glad you liked it! I decided on Turtle Pie and was going to show a picture of it, but it looked funny in between the turtle pics, so I left it out. Do you have turtle pie in Germany? It is sweet and gooey pie, with chocolate, and caramel with pecans in it to resemble “Turtle” chocolates.
I had it once Jeanine – it is super sweet. You’re right about that – loads of calories and fat grams. There is a restaurant in Las Vegas called “The Heart Attack Grill” – it is known for its high-calorie and fat-laden meals. I sent you the link to the Heart Attack Grill and was just looking at the food – can food or its presentation be considered kitschy? I don’t know how someone could lift up, (let alone eat), a burger called “the octuple bypass burger” that weighs in at 19,900 calories. It has 8 patties, which is 4 lbs of meat, 40 pieces of bacon, chili, and cheese.

Thanks – it looks like the page where you sign up for an account. I’ll check it out tomorrow – maybe someone will post it on youtube if I can’t access it on pbs online. I find so little to watch on tv or netflix that I’m disappointed I couldn’t watch it. 11pm going to bed.

I am ready for bed too (actually a while ago but hoped to get thru comments, then one day of Reader). I am pooped from all the time outside this weekend. I read your other comment that’s it’s repeated but not your stations you get. Annoying. I am pretty sure you can only watch it “live” because I had to make sure I was sitting here with the link up a few minutes before in case a lot of people were. Good luck with it Joni and I hope someone posts it on YouTube then.

Hope you had some luck Joni for a rebroadcast on PBS. I looked to see if I could find a rebroadcast somewhere – found many re-caps of Episode 1. A lot of websites I’d never heard of but “Us Magazine” I had and they gave a recap of characters. Hope this helps.

Thanks Linda….I can probably pick up the storyline with episode two. Portofino is where they filmed Enchanted April, another period piece which I loved. I checked on youtube and episode one was posted by several people but you had to subscribe to their channels. I don’t know how people get away with that when they don’t own the copyright? I hope your day goes better.

I fished the link to the recap out of trash and put it back but it was an earlier comment, so will send it again. I actually subscribe to several YouTube channels of fellow bloggers, and an art how to, but truthfully I don’t go to any of them, as I just have run out of time.

You can unsubscribe after you watch it – it doesn’t show up in your e-mail. I was subscribing to “Jared the Camera Guy” to try to learn manually how to use the DSLR – you just go to one corner of YouTube and watch it there. You don’t get notices or anything.

Thanks Linda. It asked me to create an account which I did, but after I selected my station, Detroit Public Television, it did not allow me to watch the video without signing up for Detroit Public Television Passport, which is a minimum donation of $60. That gives you access to past shows. And it says livestreaming which is what you do is not available in Canada, as they do not have the rights to livestream in Canada. Oh well, I can wait and hopefully obtain the DVD at some point from the library. I’ll watch episode two next week and see if I can pick up the storyline if it’s worthwhile – it’s only six episodes anyway. Thanks again for your effort!

Joni – You’re welcome and I’ll send this quick note before I start work … first I had a link for a a recap on U.S. magazine – it told who was who, then I discovered the live stream, so deleted the recap. I’ll find it again and send it to you tonight … you’ll at least get the gist of the plot and know the characters. It didn’t dawn on me that Canada would not be allowed to stream … I know European bloggers could not view videos that American bloggers post.

Ps. When I first clicked on the player it said video unavailable and then I went through the rest. I’ve often thought of making a donation when they are soliciting online – there was a set of oldies but goodies CD’s once that I wanted, but when I went online it had sold out. I guess I want something for my donation!

I saw them advertise a lot when I was watching ACG&S. We used to watch the PBS channel sometimes and I remember them soliciting on the TV as well.

He sure did his best Barbara! Before my very eyes, he stuck his leg out and the other turtle fell off the rock into the water! Sibling rivalry happens everywhere. 🙂

That’s a good question JP. I’ll bet the going gift for turtles would be a heavy-duty moisturizer for that leathery skin or Turtle wax to polish up the dull shell (like Pop has). 🙂

Glad you liked this post Eilene. It was fun to compile. Yes, the youngsters mobbed that large turtle who always suns on that big rock. I think he considers himself “King of the Hill” and he really wanted no part of the youngsters. 🙂

Glad you liked them Ruth. These turtles really like sunning themselves on the big rocks once it warms up outside. Most of them have their eyes closed, enjoying the sun’s rays, just like a human.

I sure hope next week is better Shelley! I did walk about six miles this morning – went down to take pics of some cars on the street and found none, so figure less people due to gas prices. The cars go in a continuous loop through three cities all day long. I did find a group of parked cars which was fun so I checked them out instead. We have storms off and on tomorrow which is not good as I’m already horribly behind in Reader.

Well the work you’re doing on the rentals is as strenuous as doing yard work Shelley, so you feel every muscle that you pulled doing it but it is good exercise. It is supposed to be cooler for the weekend and now maybe some rain for the 4th of July. It’s getting pretty dry here, so rain will be welcomed. You stay cool too!

Shelley – i had to jump on here this morning. I just heard a medical article about the 10-second mortality rule and standing on one leg for 10 seconds – yay I passed … I don’t recall which comment you made that. I was very behind, here in comments. Sigh. Happy I will live longer, but knocked a couple of years off my life with centipede at large in the house this a.m. – spiders and centipedes = my nemesis.

Yikes on spiders and centipedes. I’ve been thinking about you – we’ve been invaded by ants several times. We found this new spray that kills them instantly and is safe for humans and pets. It’s called STEM.

Yes, I was happy about passing the 10-second test Shelley and I will do that and lengthen the time standing like a flamingo … for the cause. I never saw the centipede again and am uneasy knowing it lurks here somewhere. Today, I was out in the woods and kept feeling like something was near my left ear or side of my face. I was nowhere near a mirror or a glass where I could look at my reflection. Finally I could stand it no longer, so took my left hand and felt it, plucked it off my ear and saw it had big legs – I threw that thing so fast … I’m guessing a spider and I am terrified of them. I don’t know what else it could have been. I was by myself, so I couldn’t ask anyone what it was before I grabbed it.

Yikes – I’m not a fan of spiders either. The floating spiders (for lack of the right term) can land on you anywhere. Good you tossed it away and moved on from it.

Yes, did the flamingo stance again this morning – keeping one foot off the ground in case of running critters as I was all aflutter, with another centipede in the bathroom this morning – ugh. And it was not the same one; this one was medium sized. We’ve not had rain (although predicted) which might bring in centipedes, but we are going to get slammed tonight with what you are experiencing today (they said). I’m very scared of spiders and centipedes and to have had one on my head/face freaked me out, but yes, I moved on and decided maybe I have to carry a small mirror with me going forward so I can see what lands on me in the forest. 🙂 (Hopefully not a banana slug – have you ever heard the “Discover the Forest” commercials Shelley?)

We have slugs here, but not like the size of a banana slug! Yikes.

Our slugs aren’t that big either Shelley – yikes indeed! I had slugs one year so bad I bought (and bought into the idea) soapstone mushroom slug killers from Gardener’s Supply Company. You filled them with beer and buried them 1/3 into the garden soil and the had this passageway the slugs could slide into as they were attracted to the yeast in the beer. SUPPOSEDLY they would die, but no, no dead slugs and you had to rinse out, replenish their beer supply every day or so. They ate my hostas and other perennial leaves and I spent a small fortune on Sluggo. I see their iridescent trails on sidewalks in the morning if the sun hits it just right.

Whew! Soon I think I’ll be seeing the slugs. I haven’t seen any yet though, that’s weird.
Beer to trap drunken slugs – what an idea 😁🤣

They are the ugliest things, but move slow, so I deal with them … things that move faster than me, I stand and panic what to do and dance around how to kill them. Before I bought those beer slug traps, I researched that idea and yes, it was recommended, but it was a lot of work and rinsing out all the canisters … whole yard smelled like beer. 🙂 You can also buy flat copper wire to put around each plant or make a circle of pennies around each plant. The slug’s moist body makes contact with the metal and is zapped. I just looked and the wire tape is available on Gardener’s Supply and they have a different type of slug beer trap than I had which had only one good review.

Interesting, I’ll have to look into more garden supply places. The scoundrels in my yard are winning the battle this year without Copper’s scent in the yard to scare them off.

Yes we could – in the wee hours of the morning when I turn on the light and see a centipede I will let out a scream. The windows are closed … woe is me if I ever have a burglar in here and let out a loud scream. Not that anyone would come to my aid but they’d say “ho hum, another centipede or spider is lurking in Linda’s house.” Yes, try something to keep those pesky pests away … I have heard that people plant Marigolds and I did that one year to keep the slugs at bay. It’s hard to say if it helped as I was also going through containers of Sluggo and the beer treatment simultaneously. I subscribed to “Birds and Blooms” for years and I believe it was their recommendation to surround each plant with small Marigolds – they don’t like the smell. Either did I.

My mom and her husband subscribed to Birds and Bloom too – they did have nice gardens and pesky bugs were treated by professionals. I should do more research. The dang rabbits are eating the tiny marigold sprouts – they must not stink enough at that stage? I think the baby rabbits have to eat some bad food once to learn, by then it’s too late and my flowers are gone. Sigh.

I follow Birds and Blooms on FB … kind of funny as I really have no flowers except the hydrangeas and roses now, but I see articles on there and click “save” – something else for the golden years I guess. I’m mixed about starting another butterfly garden – I still have the houses which I never took out again after I lost all the perennials and butterfly bushes (all three) after the Polar Vortex in 2013/2014. I am not so sure I want a garden like I had before with all the perennials. I lost them once and don’t aim to lose them again. The weather is too hot and erratic and getting worse. So after work today, I was on FB and what is in my feed but an article on rabbits and rabbit-resistant flowers and other hints? The article was posted today but dated in March of this year. I know you have to approve links Shelley, so I’m going to send it in a separate comment.

I’m a fan of perennial gardens that require very little on my part to keep them going. But, it is a lot of work too. My MIL spends hours weeding and maintaining – those hours are when I’m at work. LOL.

Perennial gardens are better than annuals which I think are high maintenance. I would never return to the amount of annuals I had before. I hand watered every morning before I left for work and some of the annuals were “needy” and I watered them again at night after work. When I wasn’t watering, I was weeding, deadheading or fertilizing – it never ended. Every year my mom asked me why I wanted to give myself the extra work and I said “it looks nice” yet neither of us sat anywhere to see that back/side/front gardens – only Marge saw it. Yes, they are a lot of work. I water my plants once or twice a day. Normally it’s a nice excuse to get some doses of nature and Vitamin D. This year with the scoundrels eating the flowers before they bloom it’s been slightly depressing. I’m thankful for the post, and shall keep it for a reference, thanks again for sharing.

Thanks Ally. I saw this scenario and decided it was perfect to weave in a little Father’s Day tale. That was the grumpiest-looking turtle. The smaller turtles were clamoring to sunbathe with him – he wasn’t interested.

Me too Zazzy. I had a pet turtle when I was about ten years old. His name was “Murtle” (or would that be “Myrtle”??? He lived in a plastic dish with a palm tree on the elevated platform. That was a clever name for your group. These turtles love sunning on the rocks. The turtles at the Park where I walk every day line up on logs for their sunbathing.

I had a stuffed turtle named Myrtle as a kid! I also had a turtle in one of those plastic dishes with the plastic palm and elevated platform. I think my father decided he needed to live free, after he had died. I was a little kid at that point.
Say high to your turtle friends for me. They look like they are really enjoying the sunshine.

Will do – they like lounging there in the sunshine by the covered bridge. There is another group of rocks by the water mill, but they’re smaller and they slide off and go into the water if anyone comes near.

Glad you liked it! I decided on Turtle Pie and was going to show a picture of it, but it looked funny in between the turtle pics, so I left it out. Do you have turtle pie in Germany? It is sweet and gooey pie, with chocolate, and caramel with pecans in it to resemble “Turtle” chocolates.

I had it once Jeanine – it is super sweet. You’re right about that – loads of calories and fat grams. There is a restaurant in Las Vegas called “The Heart Attack Grill” – it is known for its high-calorie and fat-laden meals. I sent you the link to the Heart Attack Grill and was just looking at the food – can food or its presentation be considered kitschy? I don’t know how someone could lift up, (let alone eat), a burger called “the octuple bypass burger” that weighs in at 19,900 calories. It has 8 patties, which is 4 lbs of meat, 40 pieces of bacon, chili, and cheese.
