About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.         Jessica, I was going to contact Matt at Michigan Duck Rescue & Sanctuary to ask if he knew … I follow his duck rescue site on Facebook. I had a couple of odd-looking ducks begging for food, nuzzling my knees back in the Winter of 2019. It happened two days in a row. This was not normal behavior and I took pics of them and sent them to Matt who has this duck sanctuary and he and his wife and a crew of volunteers make about 40 rescues a day. They have 900 rescued ducks, geese and swans living in a pond and barn where they live. Matt said they were domestic Khaki Campbell ducks and to contact him and he would rescue them, likely someone dumped them there. I went to the Park the next day and they were gone. I sent him a message – he said he’d capture them or send a volunteer, but I never saw them again. Poor babies – I worried about them all Winter, then it was the beginning of Covid. He took a duckling that fell down the sewer and the Mama waddled away without taking a nose count. She lost most of her brood down the sewer grate and this one swam to the other side and was rescued later. 🙂 Anyway, I was going to ask Matt, but first I Googled and learned that only Magpies can recognize their reflections in the water. Apparently (and you and I never thought of this), because waterfowl have their eyes at the side of their heard, they constantly swivel their head to see, thus giving them a panoramic view, with no depth perception. So much for the idea they liked what they saw! I am glad I Googled and found out.

      Glad you liked the shots Ann Marie. It was a very calm Coan River, not a ripple in it despite all the people fishing. I have often wondered that very same thing Ann Marie – sometimes I see ducks or geese looking down, especially the geese when they stand in the water and look down because they are taller. Do they like what they see or recognize themselves? We should ask an expert.

    Awww…the ducklings are a perfect reflection of their ducky parents. Just like (in my family) the boys are a perfect reflection of their father! How did that happen?:)

      It was such calm water that day Laurie despite all the people fishing at Coan Lake – perfect for reflections. It was the same in my family as your family with your boys resembling Bill. As you know I was an only child, but I looked exactly like my father, especially once I began wearing eyeglasses. Every so often my mother would show me her C-section scar to reinforce that yes, she did have a hand in my creation. 🙂

      The calm water made perfect reflections Joni – I was amazed and happy to see how clear the photos were when I saw them on the screen! You can see the water droplet from the Mama’s bill in the reflection only.

        A water droplet is a great detail. I think I’d better rethink the cell phone camera. I did some research on the Samsung S22 Ultra tonight – with 30X zoom, up to 100X possible, but I didn’t really understand how. The first review raved about it, the second was more cautious – and showed some pictures with regular and zoom – yes certainly it’s an improvement on most cell phone cameras, but the zoomed photos were still fuzzy and not as clear as I would want. It’s always good to google.

        Yes, it is good to Google. I didn’t know you could get 30X on a smartphone, let alone 100X – wow. I always look for reviews if they have them – in this case it kept you from making a wrong purchase. I have heard about Samsung’s “flip phone smartphone” and they had a review by one of the CNET techs who said they were not quite perfected yet. I know iPhones have a good camera. I don’t know anything about comparisons, but there are two contributors from CNET who give reviews about products, virus protection … it is the CNET site re: tech. I will put the site in a separate comment in case the link goes to your SPAM filter.

      Even though they were a little older than the first set of ducklings, they were still in their “fuzzy” stage, so really adorable. I’ve wondered that before too Barbara, especially with the geese who often stand up in a body of water, then drink. Do they notice themselves when they bend over to drink?

    I’ll be in Momence, Illinois on Saturday at a wonderful double river that flows near that small town. There are usually lots of ducks there. I sure hope i see some! (I have to bring some bread!)

      That sounds like fun Tom. But don’t take bread – wildlife experts are discouraging bread and crackers now (though most people, including me, have thrown out bread chunks for years). They say to give them lettuce or greens, even grapes halved instead. And cracked corn too, but the problem with “people food” is, except for the lettuce which may float on the surface of the water, you have to feed them on land then. I read to give them dried oatmeal, so I took some of my own oatmeal in a bag, dumped it on the grass and they never touched it.
