About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       I see you saw the other post Jeanine … I know if someone just saw this post they’d be scratching their head thinking “does this guy walk his ducks like you would a dog?” They are huge ducks, almost twice as big as regular ducks, though I’m not sure the pictures convey their size. They were friendly, coming up to people and people were taking pictures. I am surprised no one wanted a selfie – I’m sure they’d have obliged!

    Those are very pretty ducks. I hope he found them a good home — they look like they made wonderful pets.

      I hope so too Barbara. These ducks were almost twice as large as a regular duck and came up to my knees. When it was time to go, he had the tub in his hands and they followed him to the vehicle and he placed them in the tub.

    Playful ducks! I wonder if he brought them out for a walk or is relocating them to this park. Cool bucket to use for carrying them.

      Esther – I know you are probably behind in Reader like I am (perpetually). I wrote a few paragraphs in Monday’s post about the ducks. I’ll recap briefly here. I saw the man sitting on a park bench and the empty bucket and the ducks waddling around. Later I saw him and the ducks on the path. I asked their names. We were talking. I had suspected he might leave them but was reluctant to do son but didn’t want to ask. We talked about 10-15 minutes. He said he has to get rid of them as his neighbors were complaining. They are his pets and he had them since they were ducklings. I gave them the name of a duck sanctuary I follow on Facebook – they took the duckling who was left behind in the sewer rescue and are a non-profit. Matt and his wife Theresa run it and they take care of ducks they rescued, some with birth defects, some ducks that were dumped and also geese, swans. The young man said he might take them to the Petting Farm at Heritage Park. He was clearly attached to them. The Park walkers were enamored with them as they waddled around. I have a tote like that that I store my hose in for the Winter in the garage – mine is pink.

    I’ve missed your blog lately my friend!! It was my birthday and then I caught a bug that my son picked up from school. I always love your wordless Wednesdays but I can’t wait to catch up on your blog

      Hi LaShelle, I caught up in Reader on Sunday, now am behind again. So I am sorry you are not just behind like me, but have been ill with a bug. I’ll bet your resistance was low after your bout with Covid. I hope you are over it now – you’ve got to send Nikolai to school in a bubble until you are fully recovered from this bug. Sigh. P.S. When you read Monday’s post, you will know the story behind Benjamin and Maria who were very sweet ducks. Their owner was nice too and we chatted 10-15 minutes or so. I hadn’t written about my favorite park since the Spring with the goslings and next Monday will be about a baby squirrel. 🙂

        I read that post already and I commented but my internet is wonky so maybe it didn’t take?! I loved hearing all about it and I’m hopefully recovering. My immune system is definitely low but school and kids with germs don’t help. I’m glad you’re all caught up!! I *think* I am too… Unless my lack of WiFi didn’t post things 😬

        I have never made it to Reader, again. Monday and Wednesday are my posting days, plus I got caught up on Sunday so people replied to my comments. Whew! Tomorrow I will tackle Reader. 🙂 I think you did, but I usually do the comments, then go over to the Notifications area. Blogging will be easier when I’m retired. It will be easier for you when the growing season is over and you feel 100% again. Hang in there please LaShelle.

        Fall is extremely busy this year. I have bulbs on order, I have a hoop house to build, I have raised beds to tackle… I haven’t ripped the annuals from my flower boxes yet either and replaced them. I feel so incredibly behind AND the farrier arrives to trim hooves on Friday 😫. I don’t have anything scheduled for my blog written up for next week yet. Tomorrow I have to go grocery shopping, buy hay and essentials for the farm and start prepping for autumn. The temperatures here have dropped to 44 degrees tonight so it’s only a matter of time now. I feel like I’ve lost my head this season. I still haven’t ordered the daffodils, tulips, and Alliums I want. 😬😬😬 So I know how you feel and there’s no rush on my end for you to catch up with me on reader. ❤️🤗

        Whew – you just wore me out LaShelle! A farmer’s wife never has a minute to herself, but you also have the cutting garden to compound matters. You have a large list – how will you do it, especially not running at full steam yet? I hope the weather cooperates for you to get all this done and Hurricane Ian does not affect your agenda.

    That was cute, including the title! And that picture of them in their tub! I hope he was able to rehome them. Are you allowed to have ducks in your backyard? I know some places have rules allowing chickens.

      Thanks Joni – glad you liked the title and speaking of the title, I did this post as well as Monday’s on Sunday, the day I was so tired from the Covid shot. I published this post and tonight I sent the link to a Facebook friend I rode the the bus with for years. She doesn’t follow my blog but asks me to send the link to new posts. Then, I saw I spelled “Wordless” wrong (three s’s in Wordless). Nice proofreading. 🙂 I liked seeing those big ducks sticking their heads out of the tub when he was packing them up to leave. I didn’t know we could have ducks and I have seen people make comments in the two Facebook forums about our City that people keep chickens for eggs. I didn’t know that and apparently you’re not supposed to do that. I wouldn’t think you’d know if the chickens stayed in the garage in a hutch for example, except for the noise. I can’t imagine the two ducks make that much noise to be annoying to neighbors?

        I think you’re allowed to have up to 5 chickens for eggs – the problems come with the neighbours if there is a smell – chicken poop is stinky! Like geese in the park! My dad had a chicken coop on the farm and sometimes had baby chicks. I prefer the store eggs over the free range ones which were too orangey inside.

        Yes, I believe it could be stinky – maybe he will make a decision in Spring as the heat seems to be gone here in Michigan – it is going to the mid-40s at night – likely you as well. Ruth said they had free range; isn’t that how she lost a few of her new chicks?

        I think they put them in the chicken coop at night….but my dad just let them roam. I’m sure there were a few nocturnal visits from Mr. Fox.

        No – I haven’t been walking, although I did run a few errands in town. I’ve stayed inside the past two days and noticed fewer welts so the sun is definitely a “trigger” for them, although not the cause. It was nice out, refreshingly cool. It felt fallish.

      Not as far as I know. I asked Matt if he had contacted him and he said he’d let me know. Matt or one of his volunteers would have come to meet him or met him halfway to make it easier for him with his ducks. Matt lives about 45 miles from here. They were not at the Petting Farm. I will be going back up to Heritage Park when the leaves are at peak as they have lots of maples there for photos, so I’ll stop in and ask. I got to ask last weekend as there was a traveling circus and a lot of commotion going on and some of the “regular critters” who live at the Farm escaped. That’s going to be a blog post (if the pictures turn out – I’m so behind in looking at pictures on the photo card and I hope they turn out as it will be a fun story).

    I think it’s great the ducks don’t mind being carried around like that. I bet the enjoy the different scenery. I hope he did find a nice home for them.

      I hope so too Shelley. I haven’t seen them there again – it was Labor Day weekend and so warm – not we are having temps in the low 40s, so too cold for them without a shelter of some sort, or food.
