Shades of Autumn.

I will savor the spectacular Autumn we had here in Southeast Michigan for a very long time. When the Winter winds are howling, or I’m stepping gingerly on icy pavement, or slogging through the snow, or whacking down dagger-like icicles, I will remind myself just how lucky I was to enjoy those bonus days of “Fake Fall” when warm, even Summer-like weather descended upon us and lingered through November 11th, then Mother Nature abruptly gave us a dose of reality. The old gal likes to show who’s boss sometimes.

I learned a new word recently: “Walktober” and I’m mystified how this walker/blogger missed such a great concept eleven years into her walking regimen and nearing the tenth anniversary of her blog about walking. Hmm. If you, like me, have never encountered the lingo “Walktober” I did a little research and learned it is simply taking advantage of Autumn’s cool temperatures and spectacular views, while stepping out and stepping up to better health while boosting energy, improving mood and making walking a priority, not only in October, but for life.

I have tons of photos taken in the month of October at a variety of venues, all when the leaves were at peak and I began to ponder just how many posts you might want to see about leaves before you are thinking “oh, leaves again.” So, I decided to intersperse Fall’s fabulous foliage walks, with some very long treks taken way back in the Summer months. I’ll have to sort through all those pictures first.

So, that said, I’m going to do two more posts on picturesque Heritage Park. You’ll recall from last Monday’s post, I visited Heritage Park on Sunday, October 16th, a picture-perfect Autumn day. I wanted to ensure I got some photos of the stunning red and gold leaves at peak color.

On that perfectly calm day, I was able to get those stunning reflections of the trees on Coan Lake. Some reminded me of a Monet painting.

That morning, I had already stopped at Council Point Park and walked a few laps, plus scurrying to and fro while crisscrossing that Park, as it was my Halloween shoot sharing ghost cookies with my furry friends. I knew I’d easily walk another three miles at Heritage Park as I usually head to the historical area near Coan Lake, then walk through or past the Community Gardens, then over to the Botanical Gardens and back to the car.

I knew there had been an event the day before called the “Vintage Market and Scarecrow Stroll” as advertised on the Botanical Gardens’ Facebook page …

… and, though the Vintage Market’s vendors and their wares, dancing witches and Headless Horseman were long gone, past experience told me I was sure to catch some festive Halloween and harvest vibes the following day. Sure enough I had guessed correctly. It looks like the squirrels had a chompin’ good time on that pumpkin!

Vibrant foliage was intensified by the bright blue sky.

Even the berries were colorful.

This post will focus on the shades of Autumn at Heritage Park and next week’s post will kick off Thanksgiving week by featuring the whimsical scarecrows and gourds aplenty that graced the Botanical Gardens.

The fabulous foliage on the park’s many trees was pure eye candy.

The Canada Geese were likewise out for a Sunday stroll.

Not only were there joggers and dog walkers faithfully getting their steps in on the walking path that encircles the entire park, many people were simply strolling around the historical area as well. You sure couldn’t go wrong taking a selfie with a backdrop of beautiful leaves and I saw many people doing this, plus a few professional photographers capturing family portraits.

The Canada Geese were likewise strolling, er … waddling around on this sunny Sunday. Because there are so many geese at this park, I am accustomed to doing a “goose poop check” every so often to ensure I am not saturating my white walking shoes and on this visit, I was mindful of the Headless Horseman’s steed and its potential droppings as it meandered through the crowd the day before. Mercifully my shoes were unscathed – whew!

These geese were impersonating the Beatles crossing Abbey Road.

In all my Autumn walks, I found it amazing to see the low water levels at all parks I visited. It was no different here as you see the debris near the seawall. We have a ten-inch rainfall deficit this year.

Since geese are always milling about, the City takes care of them with this helpful signage.

The geese mostly hang out on the grounds or near/in Coan Lake.

Does the below spot look familiar? It is where Mama Goose incubated her eggs (where the leaves have gathered in the foreground). I wonder how many months until I will go on “gosling watch” again?

The geese were usually happy to oblige when I took photos of them (but, there is always that one goose who gets an attitude).

It was warm enough to just sit a spell as this woman, whose clothing matched the refurbished boxcar, was doing.

I finally left Heritage Park to drive home, car window down, sunlight streaming in and wondering if another venue might be on the day’s agenda, or if I should just head home?

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. Thanks Peggy. I’m glad you liked it. I cannot remember a Fall with such amazing colors. I have tried taking shots beneath the covered bridge before and they usually come our dark, but it was so sunny that day, I was happy to see how nice the yellow trees turned out.

Anne – we had a wonderful Autumn and mostly calm winds and it only rained one day the entire month (on Halloween), so the colorful leaves seem to hang on longer than usual. The trees looked like they were on fire.

The trees looked like they were on fire Jessica. I am glad I went that weekend as not too many leaves had fallen yet. This is a very picturesque park, especially in the Fall. I liked that goose sign too. In other local parks, I’ve taken pictures of a “turtle crossing” sign and recently of a “snake crossing” sign. Yikes for that last sign!

Thank you Susan. That Vintage Market looked like a lot of fun. I kept thinking I’d like to go, but I’m still staying away from crowds due to COVID, but the event was entirely outside and it is a big area. Those geese are usually all over the place, but this time were crossing the road in a neat little queue like the Fab Four. Next week, I’ll have some of the scarecrows from that event. Most people took their scarecrows home with them, but they were clever and colorful.

I hope to go next year – hopefully things are better Covid-wise by then. It does look like a lot of fun – all the events and from the pictures on the Botanical Gardens pages, they had a great turnout. The dancing witches looked fun – maybe 25 women in wonderful witch costumes and makeup dancing with their brooms in the Botanical Gardens!

Thanks Ally – this was one of the most-beautiful Autumns I have ever seen with spectacular colors and no rain or gusty winds the entire month of October which meant the pretty leaves hung around longer. I did laugh when I saw these geese in a row reminding me of the Fab Four.

I love the concept of Walktober (maybe even Runtober!) I will remember the warm, sunny days of early autumn during those cold, sad winter days ahead too.

On Saturday, we babysat our grandsons (and one of their friends). We went to the indoor pool at our local rec center. Bill drove the boys in his convertible with the top down! Everyone was wearing short sleeves. Cooler weather must have arrived here one day behind yours.

    Gorgeous fall foliage pics!

I definitely think Walktober should morph into Runtober Laurie! How did I miss hearing about this concept all these years? So I guess your Sunday had snow flurries coming down on the heels of riding in a convertible with the top down. Friday the neighbor across the street was washing his vehicle in short sleeves, shorts and flip flops – the next day a wintry mix. What is wrong with that picture? Glad you liked the foliage pics – it was peak that weekend for all of the Maples.

I agree Linda, this fall has been so nice and I will appreciate it well into winter. Like the water levels you have witnessed our pond is very low. Probably the lowest it has been since we first dug it and it filled in the spring of 2013. Guess that means we need a lot of snow this winter.

I didn’t think about your pond – oh my goodness … yes, of course it would have gone down as well since Michigan’s behind 10 inches in rainfall. I was at Sterling State Park in Monroe and there’s an overlook that juts out over the lagoon. Well, there was no lagoon, just dirt.

I like the idea of Walktober too – I was surprised to hear about it. Now you can incorporate it in your October posts – you said you had another post about the leaf colors? Now you are in coats and heavy sweaters, you are feeling much better, right? It is going to be bitter cold this weekend with a wind chill near 20. Those geese are usually all over the place, so I thought it was funny they formed a neat little queue to cross the pathway.

What camera did you use for these shots? Your old digital or the Rebel? They are very clear. Yes, I haven’t had any welts or itchyness since the weather turned cold – what a relief. It’s so nice to be able to sleep at night without cold packs on. I’m not sure what made it go away, the no-see-ums died off, no sunlight or heat. I can even stand long sleeves on again, so it’s all good. I guess that’s a positive about winter weather. I just hope it doesn’t come back next year if it does I will go for allergy testing.

While I like the Rebel, I like the ease of this camera. That’s good no more welts … well the sudden cold weather and this weekend we will be having wind chills in the teens for Saturday and a high of 20 … that’s crazy. I’m trying to catch up here … I slept in this morning as they called for a wintry mix.

Once I come in on a cold day, I hate to go back out, even if I’m just going back out to put the car in the garage. I know what you mean. It was not nice here today with 25 mph winds and a dusting of snow and tonight a windchill in the teens and 20 degrees. Too sudden. They are now predicting five feet of snow in Buffalo – they keep upping the total. Amazing!

I woke up to a couple of inches of snow, and it seemed too cold to walk, but I forced myself after it melted off the road, and it wasn’t too bad after I layered up. I’ve been watching the tv clips of Buffalo – it’s crazy even for Buffalo.

I woke up to a couple of inches of snow this morning – so much for a walk. I figured I’d shovel, then go for a walk, maybe take some pictures as it was newfallen snow, so would be pretty. I knew it would be cold, so like you I’d layer up, but when I got outside we had had some type of wintry precip overnight and there was a layer of ice beneath the snow. So no way was I going out on that … and 10 days ago we were in short sleeves or a light jacket and this morning a wind chill in the teens. I have already been letting the tap drip 24/7 in all the sinks since Friday night. The good weather party is done I guess. I was watching the videos and photos of Buffalo – just amazing isn’t it? The Buffalo Bills played in Detroit this weekend due to the snowstorm and there were quite a few of their diehard fans, likely season ticket holders, that drove here to watch the game. They were playing the Cleveland Browns and people drove from Cleveland. I shoveled, ran the car and came inside. Brave driver here. I had three posts to do this weekend as I will have a Thanksgiving Day post. Finished up tonight and tried to catch up on the news, etc. and here it is Sunday night again. But a three-day week which is good, but likely marred by rain part of the time.

We had a little bit of snow overnight but despite the cold it had melted off the roads by late afternoon, so I forced myself to walk to some music. The fresh air was nice. No way could I live near Buffalo. Good you have a shorter week.

I probably should have held out for later in the day, but it was so cold and when I stepped out of the door to shovel and run the car I slid a little on some ice under the snow, so that stopped me from going. I hate taking chances. I do sometimes in the Winter when I’ve not been to the Park in days and it’s a weekend so I can go in the afternoon, unlike a weekday. Our snow is all gone now – even on the streets and those that didn’t shovel. I wouldn’t want to live in Buffalo either – that’s way too much snow at one time. When we lived in Oakville, we lived on the “bend” on a U-shaped street. When we got snow, it would drift and bank up and would cover my father’s VW Beetle completely. It looked like an igloo. Unfortunately it will rain parts of the long weekend, but mornings mostly, so I’ll just go in the afternoon. At least Thanksgiving is nice.

This park is always beautiful at peak leaf color time – they have a ton of Maples here and they looked like they were on fire that day. Tomorrow I will be giving a report, which I haven’t done in a while. I just finished my post. I had it ready, just wanted to put the totals in … I have 65 more miles to reach my goal. They will be some very chilly miles this week and weekend.

I took a lot of photos at that garden venue with the red barn and birdhouse. I went back on July 31st when the volunteers said to return as that was peak time for their annuals and perennials. The only photos I’ve looked at on that camera card were taken that day and I used … the sunflowers and goldfinch. So stay tuned – the dead of Winter and you’ll see blooms and a butterfly or two! I like the concept of Walktober too – better than what we had today – ugh. Rain/sleety mix all day.

Yes, thy are gorgeous. The weekend weather will be brutal. Some parts of Michigan (and not the Upper Peninsula) were to get one inch of snow an hour later tonight … yikes! Glad I live more to the South. Dismal and gloomy skies and weather and maybe part of Thanksgiving as well. Guess I’ll get the lug-soled boots and have them handy so I can get to the Park in case of snow this weekend – ugh. Yes, I feel confident in them ’til it is heavy ice around and I think I will pass in the morning, just making weekend jaunts to the Park as they don’t shovel the path, just the parking lot. Are the girls coming to visit for Thanksgiving?

I was picturing the City signage committee debating, “Caution Goose Crossing” or “Caution Geese Crossing”? I mean, how often do you see just one goose out in the open, right? I also think you should take a survey to find out when people think Autumn turns to Winter. Not based on this year’s weather or last year’s, just in general. The calendar stands firm but that doesn’t mean people agree with it 🙂

Now you have a point there Dave – poor planning! You are correct; if one goose crosses the road, the rest are sure to follow, sometimes in a neat queue like the Fab Four crossing Abbey Road and sometimes all over the map, but never one lowly goose. I was just looking at the weather forecast and we were a high of 74 last Thursday and today our high temp was half of that, or 37, for a high and we are in for January-like brutal temps with wind chills in the teens this Saturday. Autumn weather – not! It might be an interesting poll to try out. As the expression goes, “this is not your father’s _______ (in this case: weather).”

That is funny Barbara because if you hadn’t mentioned Walktober in your post, I would not have known about it. (For some reason, I missed the word Walktober in an earlier post you had written.)

At least two fellow bloggers commented on it – one is an avid walker in Wisconsin; the other an avid runner in Pennsylvania. I am amazed, in looking at this link, that this is the 32nd year for this event. Well, I will still incorporate that lingo into my walks taken in October here in the Mitten State.

I had a beautiful October and I vowed to keep those nice walking memories in my mind through the dead of Winter. When it suddenly turned so brutally cold here, I told myself “just remember those special days.” Colorful leaves were everywhere that day – a perfect Autumn day. The geese at this park parade around the historical area and beyond, yielding to no one and sometimes posing nicely as well. I don’t know if I take more photos of Canada Geese or squirrels. In fact I had so many squirrel pics for my Thanksgiving post, I’ll put the squirrel wrangling a corn cob in another post.

These shots remind me why autumn is my favorite season of the year.

Glad you liked them JP – that’s the same reason why this is my favorite season as well. You cannot beat a sunny day when the foliage is at peak for Mother Nature at her finest.
