Wordless Wednesday – allow your photo(s) to tell the story.

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

So you’ve forgone words for numbers? Good ones, impressive ones, of course. Congrats

Ha ha – yes I try to squeeze a lot in the headline Ally. I think I could have left the metric system numbers out. Canadian fellow bloggers Joni and Wayne are the same age as me and are used to Imperial measurement and know metrics as well (I have to use the converter). Thank you. I bulked up a lot of miles in October and early November when it was so nice … who knows what we will have the last six weeks of this year? We will be 15-20 below average this weekend.

Good for you, Linda! You should be able to do the remaining 65 miles without a problem. If Mother Nature cooperates, of course!

Thanks Laurie – I think I should be okay too. I bulked up the miles in October and early November – we will have a brutally cold (for November) weekend, but no snow, so I’ll just bundle up. Mother Nature has been a little fractious this week.

Yep – I think I will make it, unless Mother Nature pulls a fast one on m. Last week this time we had 74 degrees (way above normal) and this weekend we will be in the 20s with a windchill in the teens. It’s not snow and ice, so off I go bundled up.

Yes Terri. I have just 65 miles to meet my year-end goal of 1,256 miles walked this year. Next year’s goal will be 1,257 miles (I won’t try to beat any miles walked over 1,256). Thank you – feet don’t fail me now and Mother Nature be kind!

Ann Marie, it got way too cold all of a sudden. Better get your long johns out before the weekend – Saturday morning will be 20 degrees and windchill in the teens! But no ice and snow, so onward we go.

Thanks Peggy – a goose walking and a goose resting seemed perfect to talk about my walking stats this year. The geese were very close to me when I took the shots. I do pack in a lot of words with my titles. 🙂 I think I could have eliminated the metric portion as I’m down to only four bloggers living outside the U.S.

Thank you rajkkhoja. I am glad you liked it. Yes, only 65 miles left and it should not be a problem to reach my goal unless the weather turns ugly with snow/ice. We suddenly have cold weather (more like November) and very cold, but no snow, this weekend. So I will get out and walk, walk, walk before the weather gets snowy and icy.

But there are very cold weather. Some time snowfall. When you walk have to distrub snowfall.

Hi rajkkhoja – We are having some strange weather – a week ago today we were double the temperature we are today. It was like a Summer day – right now we are having a light snowfall and brutally cold weather this weekend (weather temperatures like we have in January). Are you having odd weather in your country due to climate change? The weather should not impact my walking unless it is icy. I do walk on some ice in the Winter to get to the Park to feed my critters. That is one mile (1.6 kms) each way. I feel badly for them and I don’t like driving in Winter. Since I work from home, I don’t take my car out in ice and snow unless the roads are clear.

        Her e is odd season.
Winter December to January Cool. Spring Feburary to March Sunny and pleasant.
        Summer April to June Hot.
Monsoon July to Mid-September Wet, hot and humid. Here never snowfall & no icy.
Some hell stations there very cold , snowfall & icy weather in winter season. I like winter season. Your country weather is good.
        Thanks, Linda!

I think I would like your Winter and Spring best rajkkhoja – I’m happy you do not have Winter, which is pretty to look at and if you’re dressed for it, it is invigorating to walk in, but the ice and snow can be treacherous for walking, driving and also shoveling. Are you hearing on your news about the big snowstorm in Buffalo, New York? It is a monstrous snowstorm, expected to dump five feet of snow (0.001524 kms) over a day.

Wow Linda, you’re really close to meeting your goal….and exceeding it! Congratulations! Now you can sleep in some of those nasty snowy days.

    • Linda Schaub says:

Yes, Joni – I think I won’t have any problems reaching my goal unless it is ugly all through December. It will be cold, but they said warming up a little next week and no snow, then the long holiday, so longer walks. So I am hopeful no issues reaching my goal and yes sleeping in a little some mornings. The thing is even in Winter, I go out every day to run the car and I have to go outside even though it’s an attached garage. So unless it is icy (dicey to walk)/snowy (have to shovel), I’m out anyway, so I just walk. But no enjoyable worry-free walks are guaranteed daily until next May.

Thank you Diane! I am sure I’ll finish as I have six weeks ’til year-end, though the weather doesn’t sound too great as a potential wintry mix rolls thru and bitter temps this weekend. The temps won’t bother me as I’ll bundle up and have warm clothes and hats/scarves/mitts from all the years of taking the bus. I will continue walking til the end of the year, but won’t count it – the weather is getting so erratic that it took a long time to get through Spring this year as we had some ice and snow lingering.

  11. Are these Candian geese, Linda? If so, I expect all those feathers keep them warm during the winter.

I never thought of setting a walking target for the year. How do you measure how far you have walked?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Linda Schaub says:

Yes, you are correct – they are Canada Geese and they have oil in their feathers, as do ducks, which acts like a shield to keep the cold and water away from their bodies. We have geese at this park and the park I walk in daily and weekends as well. They stay here and don’t migrate.

It is fun to set a goal and it keeps me on my toes Hugh. I bought a pedometer the first year I began walking (2011) and still use the same pedometer. I like it as it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles and just counts steps and tells the current time and you can view those stats for the past seven days. It is by Omron which is well known for their blood pressure monitors. Unfortunately Omron stopped carrying the model I had. I see people using their smartphones to measure their steps. I don’t have a smartphone, just a flip phone though.

You’re welcome Hugh. I think it will be fun for you to do and you would not believe how many miles you rack up. I have my pedometer on, even on a morning running errands before I start work. Grocery shopping and schlepping the bags from the car into the house can garner three miles. I work from home, so once I am home, there are not many steps to gain as it is a small house. Good luck!

I think I will make it, maybe even surpass it Shelley. I am glad I got so many miles walked in September when it finally was a little cooler and then the beautiful weather we had in October and up until this week. At least the geese stop and pose sometimes and are not skittish in the least, so I was standing pretty close when this one was strutting its stuff. 🙂

She looks so intent in the first picture, yet relaxed in the second picture. Thank you Barbara. I was feeling pretty confident with just 65 miles left to go, but today was ice under the snow … I did some slip-sliding when I went out to shovel so decided not to walk. And a few rainy days over the Thanksgiving long holiday are in store, so now I will feel more confident the last week of the year.

      • I was happy to see you weren’t in the path of that six foot snowfall — yikes! Too bad about that icy day but I’m hoping you get enough walkable days to meet your impressive goal. Working around the weather gives us all lessons in flexibility. 🙂

Oh I am happy as well to have missed any storm or remnants of it Barbara. Even our two-inch snowfall is now gone from this afternoon’s sun. When we lived in Canada, our street was U-shaped, not really a cul de sac, but we lived on one of the bends in the “U” and when we got blowing and drifting snow, it would bank up and settle on my father’s VW Beetle, covering it like an igloo. And back then, it was a new sub and no paved streets or driveways – all gravel. I wonder how my father shoveled snow? I guess you’d have to pick up all the gravel out of the grass every Spring before cutting the lawn.

Yes, the erratic weather gives us a run for our money. I was reading the long-range predictions for Winter from my favorite meteorologist (and he has been studying climate change and giving talks on it for years) … I have to admit I’ve not got a clue what he has predicted. He says the meteorologists are basing this forecast on the third year in a row for La Nina and it will be wet, maybe snow, maybe rain – at least two ice storms. Don’t like ice storms – too many old trees around here and a huge one a house over is now dead. It dropped its leaves in August.

Thanks Janis – I think I am good to finish, but yesterday I stepped outside to shovel snow and had all intentions of walking, but there had been a wintry mix and I slid outside the door – oops. Still slick this morning, but now we have some milder weather and rain over the long holiday. But at least I can walk any time as I’m off.the four days The first year I was counting steps and miles, we had a ton of snow in Winter. There is a park a few blocks from where I live, but no walking paths, just grass. I ended up walking over to that park and walking many laps in their salted/plowed parking lot to get it done.

So, you put more miles on your shoes than you do on your car? Not many people can say that, especially in Michigan!

    • Linda Schaub says:

Yes I do JP, especially since I am a Winter Weenie as to driving. I took the bus to downtown Detroit, first for my last two years of school (Wayne State University), then I worked downtown for decades. The bus stop was just around the corner from my house so the car stayed in the garage more than it was out, thus no chance to hone my driving skills. I have driven more miles this year than usual because the car is older and the mechanic said “drive it more!!” When I began my walking regimen, I only walked a few hundred miles a year, so I made a special effort to keep track of walking versus driving miles and always stayed ahead with walking miles. It probably wasn’t smart though as the car needs to be driven or will get electrical quirks like the last car, my ’88 Regal which I had 21 years before its electrical issues made it unsafe to drive.
