About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy.       Thank you Zazzy. I am sure they are tucked in their nests right now, especially the squirrels (curled up against one another to keep warm). I hope to make it there on Monday … tomorrow is still iffy, but hey … it will be 49 degrees on Friday.

      I wish it was Wayne. repurposed for this card! The header image is a clip art I got years ago and used it the first year I was blogging (2013). I decided since I didn’t do a squirrels eating Christmas treats post this year I’d try something different. My mom told me that my father built me a little wooden sled with sides on it and runners and a handle and he used to take me to High Park in Toronto in the Winter. We lived in an apartment until I was two, then we moved to Oakville. So, I looked in my photos when I was looking for doll photos and couldn’t find a picture as I would have liked to use it here. I have a toboggan pic with me on it, but I was older. Do kids have toboggans anymore? We had fun on them back in the day. Merry Christmas to you too Wayne!

        good question………I assume kids still toboggan, just not around here.
        Toque and Toboggan are the most Canadian words I know of!

        If the weather stays as erratic as it’s been they may toboggan there too! Sure, we all had a toque and toboggan … we never minded spending hours out in the snow either. I don’t think it was as cold as it is here right now. A little warmer than yesterday when it was -24 windchill and winds gusting 45 mph +. I’d be bundled up, could barely see my face. Mom would push me out the door “get the stink off ya!”

    Thanks Linda for the lovely card! We are under a storm seige here since Friday morning, all highways closed. It is storming like it used to when I was a kid! Merry Christmas and all the Best for the New Year Linda!

      You’re welcome Susan. I’m sorry you did not get to go to your son’s place for Christmas. The weather is horrible after such a great Fall. We didn’t get the big snowfall they predicted, just an inch or two, but we have had the brutal temps and high winds. The first year we lived in the States, we went back to visit my grandmother for the American Thanksgiving holiday as my father was off work and I was off school. The weather was to be good, but on the Sunday morning there was an unexpected snow storm and the 401 was closed, just like you have now. So we had to stay until Monday. Well, you’ll have a quiet Christmas anyway. Best to you as well and for the New Year … time to counting down until Spring.

        Yes spring can’t come fast enough lol. We did see my son on the 19th for two nights, we went to Toronto to stay at his place and I’m glad we did as there was no travel over the holiday weekend. There are still lots of people without electricity, since Friday. It was pretty bad here, a storm not to be forgotten! We have a back deck that is covered and we had our canoe up on saw horses right against the house and the wind took it off the deck and into the middle of our back yard! Gale force winds, lots of trees down which is always sad to see. But we are all fine and doing well!

        Thank goodness you didn’t lose power or had major damage Susan. It is amazing the wind sent the canoe off the deck and out in the middle of the back yard. Good thing it didn’t fly into your house (or a doorwall). Because of the expected high winds, DTE, our energy provider, cancelled all vacations for its 700 linemen and then surprisingly there were very few power outages. We didn’t get much snow, just those powerful winds and brutal temps. Now it will be tropical by the end of the week!

        Our weather is like spring now! Crazy how the weather is so up and down. I feel bad for the linemen having their plans canceled. Our line men here were super busy!

        It is 55 now. It wasn’t raining so I went out to run the car in the garage and walk to the Park. Within minutes of going out, it started raining, so I passed up that walk. I felt bad for those linemen too as we didn’t lose as much power as anticipated, plus you might have this for your Hydro – we share our linemen and send a convoy of them in their rigs when there is bad weather in other states and they do likewise for us. So DTE, our energy provider, told the other states before the storm that Michigan linemen could not participate. I never heard if they relented since we didn’t get the disaster they anticipated.

      Thank you Joni – I decided since I didn’t do a “squirrels feasting on Christmas goodies post” I would do something different this year. I thought that card was perfect for you, the bookworm. Merry Christmas to you and your mom. Thank you for your e-mails. I will respond tomorrow as I am desperately behind here in Reader. I’m hoping everyone is off WP tonight so I’ll catch up a bit.

        I thought it was tailor-made for you Joni. I have a few posts I didn’t get to last night and now I’ll have today’s post, but there shouldn’t be many. I wrote tomorrow’s post today when I got in from shoveling and running the car. A little warmer (if that’s the right terminology as it was still cold out) but we got about four inches of snow. I guess I’ll wait until next weekend to start my book. I was distracted by the weather and now it is Sunday night already. Next week will be balmy and rainy.

      Thank you Barbara and glad you liked the card. I was happy to find one with a sleigh to match my poem. I don’t remember putting out carrots for Santa’s reindeer back when I was young, but I like that idea. Maybe the idea didn’t catch on in Canada or it is relatively new? The hard-working reindeer need sustenance too!

        It’s not a new idea but I have no idea if it is widespread. My parents had us leave carrots out for Santa’s reindeer but maybe that was unique to them? It seems like the kind of thing nature lovers would have their children do. I agree, those reindeer are working hard!
