Parker sez: “Five peanuts for five poses!” #Wordless Wednesday #Yep, I paid up!

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Yes, he likes to show he is a squirrel of many moods and faces to match the moods. When I saw the picture of the side profile I knew this would be the subject of this post. 🙂

Thanks Barbara! It was great … Parker dropped down onto this branch and sprawled out right in front me. “Here I am, take pictures of me and feed me peanuts while you’re at it!”

He sure is Wayne! I think he’d pose even without the peanut incentive! He plopped down onto the branch and stretched out right in front of me!

      • normally they splay out like that when it’s hot. It wasn’t that hot, was it?

      • Linda Schaub says:

I know, like splooting. It was not hot at all Wayne – Parker just came down from higher in the tree and laid like that, so I moved in a little more and didn’t even have to zoom in on him. After we had that 10 days of weather in the 80s, it shifted course and we have been in the 40s for a high the last two weeks (with a little snow flurries and lots of rain). Today we turned a corner and feels like Spring.

Yes, he looked a little tired when he plopped down and stretched out on the branch Ann Marie, but perked up when he saw the camera (and no doubt the peanut bag)!

You can identify Parker from all his squirrel buddies/cousins? I’m impressed! I like the way he provided different poses for you!

Glad you liked the photos Rebecca. I was really close to him for these shots and those hand-like paws are amazing and reminded me of pictures of raccoons fishing with their human-like paws. No wonder they can scramble up and down the tree so quickly!

Ha ha – yes he does Diane. I have seen him (and other squirrels) hang upside down by their feet on trees to get my attention for peanuts. Paws like Velcro!

I think he still has some of his Winter weight on him Tom – maybe I’m fattening him up with peanuts. I have never been that close to him at eye level before – he was either tired or enjoying all the attention I gave him for staying in place for so long and I think it was the latter. 🙂

I’ve never had him up so close at eye level before Hugh. I was just using a digital compact camera and didn’t even have to zoom in on him. I think he was enjoying the attention (and probably anticipating the reward). I spoil this squirrel I’ve named Parker and been interacting with him for quite a few years now.

He was literally right at eye level in front of me Joni. I didn’t even zoom in and I used the compact digital camera. He was probably thinking I’d hand him a peanut while he was up there, which I did not. I put them at the base of the tree so he could see them.

I love Parker. I’m curious, though you did say he plopped down right in front of you, how close did he allow you to get? Did you have to zoom in or did he really let you get that close? I once spent a considerable amount of time taking small, careful steps then pausing to get a closer picture of a prairie dog and the final snaps were nowhere near as close as ol’ Parker there. Wonderful shots!

Glad you liked these shots Zazzy! He was in the tree, came down and stretched on the branch like that. I just kept getting closer to him and no, I did not zoom in on him at all. I was using a compact digital camera. He is used to me taking photos of him with that small camera so he wasn’t scared, but I’ve never been that close up to him before. He probably thought I’d feed him while I was so close as I often feed him (holding the peanut between two fingers, not from my palm), but I laid the peanuts at the base of the tree and pointed at them. Your prairie dog story makes me think of my groundhog on the boardwalk story. I was at Elizabeth Park a few years ago. I saw a roly-poly groundhog pop out of a hole next to the wooden boardwalk which was a first for me but I was there later in the day. So, just then I saw a man pushing a stroller with a toddler in it and they were on the side where the groundhog was. So I pointed and said “be careful” or something like that to alert him. He says “oh, he begs all the time and people give him treats and cookies.” I was able to get some close-up shots as the groundhog waited patiently for me to give him treats, but I didn’t have any and felt badly. After that day I carried a treat with me for the longest time to give to him and I’ve never seen him again. 🙂

Amazing photos. I love this guy’s facial expressions. He seems about as interested in you as you are in him.

Thanks Ally – he was right in front of me at eye level, which was unusual. I didn’t even have to zoom in to get those shots as he was just a few feet away. His interest was piqued as to peanuts; mine was for photos. When he turned his head for a profile shot, I thought he was really enjoying himself. 🙂

He was really close Esther and I was not zooming in on him. I took the pic of him sprawled out, then just walked closer to him. When I saw him stretched out, I wanted to ensure he was not sick, before I got any closer. It wasn’t hot, so I don’t know why he jumped down and sprawled out like that. 🙂 He is definitely an attention-seeking squirrel!
