About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

That shimmery dark blue green color on this guy’s head is beautiful. Lovely shot

Thank you Ally. I also marvel sometimes when the sun is shining just right and picks up that shimmery head. I always feel badly when it is molting time for the Mallards as their plumage is mottled and you can see their skin from all the missing feathers.

  3. Beautiful. I wonder if he turned and posed to show you he was wearing his brown bib and wouldn’t get his white feathers dirty at dinner.

Thank you Anne – yes, you’re right! He gave me a great opportunity to get a shot of him, even dipping his head down a little bit. I think they were tired as I was right there on the deck with them and they didn’t get flustered or take off.

You captured the mallard perfectly! How do you get your subjects to “pose” like that? Must take patience.

  7. He’s had a nice lunch…looking plump, content, and relaxed. It’s cool you got a picture of the duck sitting on the ledge. Very nice!

  10. Great photos! Ah…to be a duck. Wouldn’t that be delightful to just plop down, shake off the morning struggles, duck your head into your feathers for a nap, and then wake up all refreshed and ready for the next big jump into the project ahead? 😂

Miss Linda……………………only a knowledgeable photographer like you can get a most beautiful close up picture of the Mallard duck just sitting and sunbathing like you…………………thanks ………………….I love the ducks the best but they always jump into the water when I get too close……………………

Thank you for saying that Ann Marie … I think the ducks were just relaxing contentedly so they weren’t really mindful of my presence, especially that one that just fell asleep on me. This was on the new overlook they built at Heritage Park over by the gazebo. Soon it will be time to go fishing there as well.

These are lovely shots! I don’t think I have ever seen one missing most of the feathers on the front like that (at least that’s what I think it is). It looks like me after a big meal of spaghetti or barbecue, with lots of stuff spilled all over my shirt. 🙂

Thanks JP! I actually took more shots of them, but thought they probably looked alike, so reluctantly left them out of the post. Those ducks on the railing were so laid back that I don’t think they cared I was standing so close to them. The Mallards are starting to molt – there were feathers everywhere. By July, they really look kind of frowsy, especially the colorful males, as they have big patches of feathers missing, even their teal head feathers. I like the comparison to you – made me smile. 🙂
