This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub
That’s for sure Barbara – bad enough the seaweed and muck and mire, but water bottles and what not left behind by humans. Poor babies. They were very cute – Mama’s little darlings.
Yes it was Rebecca. Mama zig-zagged in and out of the muck and mire and they just followed along making their little duckling noises. They were pretty big … for sure she would not lose them in the seaweed clumps. They never strayed far from her side.
Aw…they’re so stinking (literally that water must stink a bit 😂) cute – that’s so fun that they swam around and gave you different poses for the camera too!!
They were so cute Shelley. I could not help but think of the little duck’s photo on the label of “Mucky Duck Mustard” – I don’t know if this tangy mustard is a regional thing, but it only used to be available at some stores. They cleaned up nicely once they left the gunk and didn’t even need Dawn Dishwashing Soap!
Yes, they are so cute. I’ve never heard of Mucky Duck Mustard – Googled it and see that Walmart carries it.
That’s great they didn’t need Dawn to get clean, that’s a good thing!
You’ll have to try it Shelley. I’ve not bought it for a while – the only place that carried it around here was Westborn Market, a fun produce market that had a lot of vendors with specialty items. They had a Stahl’s Bakery area – their specialty was “Belly Button cookies” – they were very large, crispy, flat, praline cookies – Stahl’s Bakery went out of business but this was a treat every time we went to Dearborn. They were a ridiculous price for about eight cookies. Yes, those ducklings cleaned up well – they didn’t need dunkin’ in Dawn Dishsoap.
I’ll keep my eye out for it. Those hometown bakeries smell so delightful and the items are priced high! We had a cupcake company pop up during early days of COVID and they made a fortune on their $8/cupcake pricing.
Yay for mother nature’s baths – and resilient feathers!
I would go into Westborn Market to pick up a few items – peeled the price tag off the cookies. They were ridiculously high as their trademark cookies. I am not really big on Danish pastries – if I’m going to indulge it would be something crunchy like a cookie, but my mom loved their bear claws, another of their specialties. They are out of business now – sold their vintage store to a brewery or pub. That is ridiculous pricing for cupcakes!! Those ducklings sure cleaned up well!
We had a pub/brewery in my city and it closed down due to Covid. It amazed me because it got good reviews and whenever I passed during the day, they were busy. Covid killed them and now it sits empty – what a shame.
My mom used to say that expression too JP – so many clever expressions we grew up hearing have vanished now. Your quip is great (as usual) … the ducks had no problem navigating around the muck and mire, no sink or swim. I saw them and immediately thought of Mucky Duck mustard, a tangy mustard made here in Michigan which you can only buy in the bigger produce stores or butcher shops.
Beautiful photography. Beautiful duckling.

It’s wise to be selective when purchasing a treat that really isn’t good for us to eat! 🤣 Pups, breweries, and wineries seem to stay in business.

I agree Laurie – no “Mom of the Year” prize for sending your little ones into this gunk!

My mother used to have an expression of something being as snug as a bug in a rug. Now I’m thinking about the luck of a duck in the muck.
