About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

It’s a turtle Raj. And I guess it is difficult to tell what it is as it pulled its head inside its shell. It was pretty big too. Do you have turtles in your country?

Thanks,Linda! Yes, turtles in Country. I saw & keep in my hand, when I younger. When I & my friends swimming in lacke that time we caught the turtle. But I never that they pulled its head inside its shell.
But I can’t guess your post image.
        I like turtle 🐢!

It was hard to tell what it was with the head tucked inside its shell. We have a lot of turtles at this park as it is near a Creek, but I had the camera handy so luckily I got a shot of this one. I had a pet turtle when I was about ten years old. I called it “Murtle”. I think it is a snapping turtle and they bite.

Sunblock is my nemesis. I’m right there with you trying to not look leathery, but on the turtle it’s endearing.

I did my share of getting sun to look healthy when I was younger and now I am more careful, but I’m right there with you on sunblock Ally. This year I bought some UV protection clothing and a hat after I got burned with gray skies last year. The clothing is 50 UPF and light as a feather (good thing as the tops are long-sleeved). I haven’t worn the hat yet … too hot for a hat this Summer. I was surprised to learn that light-colored clothing does not protect from the sun as well as dark-colored clothing. I always thought it was the opposite as summery clothes are always white, or light colors – who knew?

  5. Smart tortoise avoiding the sun’s harmful rays. I’ve read they can get sunburned and develop skin cancer, too. Where did you find this one?

Yes, it was a very warm morning Barbara and it was sitting on the side of the perimeter path at Council Point Park, seemingly oblivious to all the walkers. A few years ago I was there when a much bigger turtle was laying eggs. It was fascinating to watch her dig the hole with her flippers, lay the eggs, then put dirt over top. I noted where she deposited the legs, so every day I walked by hoping to see baby turtles running across the path to go to the water, but it happened overnight. I didn’t realize they could develop skin cancer, nor get sunburned … that was interesting to learn.

      • The egg laying must have been very fascinating to witness! Too bad you missed the babies. I wonder if they always emerge at night to avoid predators…

Yes it was Barbara – a lot of eggs and she swiftly covered them over with dirt and went on her way. I’m guessing it was night time to avoid predators. At the time I read that they never built the nest more than 25 feet away for a quick exit to the water!

Ha! He’s got a good natural sun-blocker. We did a trail run with a friend last week and found 2 turtles on our route. One was on a gravel road and we moved him off to the side to prevent him from encountering any cars.

He sure does Laurie. He was parked along the side of the perimeter path one morning, blissfully sleeping as many people just walked on past him. That was nice of you to do that … they are like geese and ducks who march their offspring across a busy highway, not realizing the danger.

Thanks Eilene! Yes, it was a fairly big turtle parked along the perimeter path and oblivious to the walkers, rollerbladers and bikers who went past it. There was a lot of Poplar tree fuzz on the ground that day. I am sure some people have wondered about that – we often look like we have had a dusting of snow when the Poplar fuzz flies.

  10. Turtles have a very rough time in this heat.

Yes they do Tom – the heat is brutal for them under that shell. Luckily this year there is more water in creeks, ponds and rivers for them to thrive. Last Fall, so many of the overlooks that once jutted out over bodies of water, were overlooking dried up land. I wondered where a lot of turtles and crustaceans would have overwintered for 2022-2023?

  11. I knew it was a turtle right away Linda. I have never seen one in the weeds like that though. I went fishing in a nature place in the country trying to catch Blue Gill fish. Darn turtles kept biting instead, stealing my bait! Lol

I thought people would know it was a turtle Diane, but I went back and tagged it “turtle” … maybe the Poplar fuzz in front made it difficult to see its face. Funny you mention fishing for Blue Gill fish because I have never seen a Blue Gill and yesterday at Lake Erie Metropark I was chatting with two fishermen. The one guy got two small Blue Gills while I was talking to him – he threw both back, but I took pictures of the fish. And the other guy had two different times where a fish bit part of the worm and left the other half on the hook! He showed me the piece of work still on the hook and said the fish were smart enough to grab a bite to eat, but not get hooked. 🙂 I would not have known that a turtle would try to steal bait!

      • They not only steal the bait but get hooked too! My son was fishing in a creek close to our house and he caught a snapping turtle!

Wow! I’ll bet your son was surprised to see a snapping turtle on his hook and unhooked him very carefully! I’ve seen more turtles in the Park this year than ever before. This one was sitting on the side of the walking path … very few bunnies this year, lots of turtles. You have to wonder why?

Thank you Esther – I love creating fun titles for the Wordless Wednesday posts. I originally was going to call it “Half-baked” since it was getting more leathery than usual baking in the hot sun, but went this route instead. I still have a lot of fun animal poses to use up for upcoming Wednesdays.
