About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Your title describes me and my wife perfectly, Linda. I always get a little “me” time in the mornings 🙂

“Me” time in the mornings is good Dave, just you and your thoughts to ease into your day. I am a morning person myself and I like to sit and enjoy my coffee and breakfast as the morning unfolds until it’s time to go on my walk or if I have to do errands. There were too many years of racing around the house to get ready on time to catch the bus to go to work, to not savor my less-harried mornings now.

Impressive isn’t it Esther? When you catch your breath, I have a post from a couple of weeks ago about a duck pond. I had mentioned going to it to you back in the Summer as you and the kids were going to the duck pond back in the Spring and enjoying it and taking pics.

      • Ack, can you imagine one of them flying over you with that wingspan?!
Oh, I’ll check it out once I catch my breath. Yes, we do love our ducks and visiting them. It’s been a while since we’ve seen them and fed them oatmeal. The oatmeal we feed them is now fed to the mealworms we raise for Dart. What the heck, right?! Mealworms, crickets, and kids think Dart should get Dubia roaches for Christmas. (has good protein for geckos)
Today, we went to Petsmart to get some crickets and saw a tiny gecko that had its tail fall off from fright and had grown back into a nub. We saw it a few weeks ago and asked if we could adopt it for free. The guy said “ok,” but we decided to stop ourselves. But we went back today and it was still there. Oh boy, I was so tempted to bring it home with us.

I always feel like I want to duck when big birds go overhead, especially a big flock of them. When Mute Swans fly overhead, even before they get near you, their wings make a humming noise and you know to look up … it has happened to me several times before. It does not have to be a flock of them either, just a pair and the noise carries up to a mile.

Interesting you’re making Dart’s mealworms grow big and fat. Do you have to special order the Dubia roaches or does Petsmart carry them? Thinking ahead for Christmas shopping – that is good Esther. 🙂 I can imagine you wavering on whether to have another gecko in the house – I guess it would mean separate living quarters too … so they think it is not adoptable due to no tail … it can’t get around as in having balance issues with a nub instead of a tail?

When I got busy with blogging, up until a year ago, I stayed up every evening to respond to each comment plus read each blog post and comment on it. I was not getting to bed until 11:30 p.m. – midnight. I was not getting much sleep, so had to stop that. Now I aim for at least seven hours of sleep a night. Hard to be a night owl and an early riser – something’s got to give!

I can identify with that early bird, though I become more of a late bird lately. A quiet place and a cup of coffee help no matter what time I arise.

I like to ease into my day as well JP. Your new work hours would take some getting used to as I’m no longer a night owl like going out with friends to concerts and such in college, then on the diner floor at 6:45 a.m. for an eight-hour shift. Then too many years of getting up, ready for work and out the door to catch the bus to work downtown. I was on a strict timetable back then and am not quite as punctual getting out the door as I once was.

Shelley, oddly enough when I got there they were ALL sleeping and suddenly this duck jumped up, like it awoke from a bad dream, looked at its watch and said “I’m late, I’m late .. for a very important date” and flew off. I wanted to entitle it “Time to make the donuts!” I thought a lot of people may not have seen the Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. 🙂

      • That must’ve been a funny scene to see. I think your title was clever as is.
I wonder if I saw that DD commercial or not? 🤔
On a complete side note. . .I forgot to tell you that I did grow up enjoying Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans shows (I think they were re-runs) too!! Do you remember the Mr. Ed show? That was a favorite too.

Great Shelley. I’m glad you saw Captain Kangaroo, even if in reruns or on Nicklodeon. That was a fun show for kids and I watched Romper Room too (before I started kindergarten). I knew you were not around for the first run. I liked Mr. Ed too. They made him look like he was “talking” by shoving peanut butter in his mouth and he moved his lips and mouth around trying to eat it. Little trivia for you. The DD commercial ran for several years … an older guy goes out the door to go to work at the crack of dawn. He is half asleep, looks like he is sleepwalking and he says “gotta go make the donuts” and off he goes. That tagline was because Dunkin Donuts makes their donuts fresh all day long.

      • Captain Kangaroo taught such great lessons. So did you miss the beginning of Sesame Street then? I think I saw reruns of Romper Room too.
I didn’t know that about Mr. Ed! Makes sense – poor horse, I hate the feeling of PB in my mouth, can you imagine how much they had to put in his mouth?!
Okay, I think I vaguely remember that DD commercial. Thanks for clarifying!

Hi Shelley – I loved Captain Kangaroo! I was too old for Sesame Street so I really never knew who any of the Muppet characters were until learning about them in social media, etc. years later. I just Googled and Sesame Street began in 1969, so I was 13. I never saw any of the Peanuts characters in their holiday shows as I was too old for that as well – I don’t remember seeing the cartoon strip until I was older and read the newspaper. In later years, I started collecting a few Snoopy items and my mom bought a Peanuts holiday train for a Christmas ornament. We had it set up on a table top. It’s been 15 years since I put out the Christmas decorations – Christmas 2008. I vow to decorate a little after I retire. Mr. Ed would not like the PB in his mouth – moving his mouth around. Maybe a whole jar of PB in his mouth? At least it was a natural way to get him to appear to be speaking. That DD commercial was funny and aired years ago – glad you remembered it!

      • Me too! I was 5 so one of the first group of kiddos to be watching Sesame Street. I loved Peanuts too – pretend drawing Snoopy and Woodstock was a fun hobby back then.
Aw, your decorating once you retire will be a fun blog post!
Mr. Ed was a true saint to put up with peanut butter mouth. He might’ve done the same thing with DD but would’ve been messier 🤣

Oh to be young and grow up with Peanuts characters. I was sorry I missed them as a child. Mr. Ed was a saint wasn’t he? I also never missed Lassie nor Rin Tin Tin … those had to be before your time unless you watched them on Nickleodeon? Yes, especially jelly donuts – smeared on Mr. Ed’s lips. 🙂

      • Yes, such happy memories. I feel sorry for the kids nowadays, the weird cartoons they have don’t strike me as good as the ones we grew up with. Yes, I loved Lassie and Rin Tin Tin too!
The tricks of the trade using animals. Gotta love their ingenuity, I guess.

Long before the horse whisperer, there was Mr. Ed’s trainer … not as famous perhaps. There were many Lassies over the years, though we couldn’t tell. 🙂 I never missed any of those animal shows back in the day.

      • Aw, you’ve always been an animal lover. Maybe when you’re retired you could volunteer at the animal shelter? 🤔😉

Yes, since I was young. I wanted to be a veterinarian, but did not have good grades in math, chemistry, physical science – only did well in biology. I would have likely been a bleeding heart anyway and not a good vet because of it. I have thought of volunteering – our City is building a new animal shelter – the other one was temporary and we shared with another city for years before that. Most of the dogs brought into the shelter are pit bulls found roaming the streets, so that would be worrisome to be honest. We just had a young boy mauled to death a few weeks ago, playing in his grandmother’s yard and a pitbull got in and killed him. I’m allergic to cats (or was years ago when I had the allergans test in 1975) or I would volunteer at a place that is a day spa for dogs and she has made part of the place into an area where she shelters kittens and some puppies. Last week she had a pair of domestic rabbits and their offspring that someone dumped behind a nearby hospital. They were beautiful – she was asking for rabbit animal rehabbers to take them as she had no room, but would not turn them out in the cold. This woman also collects pet food by soliciting companies to help sponsor the animals she takes in and also gets donors to give money for pet food for people who cannot afford to feed their pets. She is kind hearted doing this and I like the organization, but it is about 10 miles from where I live, so a 20-mile roundtrip if I would go on a regular basis.

      • What about volunteering to write clever posts about the personalities of the critters up for adoption? You have a gift for bringing them to life and maybe that would help them find a home faster? 🤔😊🤗

I like that idea Shelley – now that would be fun! The girl who runs the Facebook site names these kittens – there are always lots of kitten and when a litter of them are found abandoned, or in one case the Mama cat was killed and very young kittens (so young their eyes weren’t open), she named them after deserts; sometimes a litter is named after a “theme”. I have to go see this place, not right now, but with that idea in mind. She has had volunteers in the past bottle feeding baby kittens too.
