About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Man, you are GOOD!!! Gettting those swallow photos must have been difficult. I miss the swallows! Can’t wait until they come back again.

That WAS lucky Laurie – thank you! The swallow was sitting on a ledge near the covered bridge where they nest in the rafters. It was taking a break from catching insects in mid-air and didn’t see me at first. It sure gave me a defiant look when it caught sight of me. When I go to Lake Erie Metropark, there is an overlook where people fish and if I walk over it and there are no other people there, I see barn swallows alight on a dead tree. They line up like they are chatting with one another. Very cool! So, I have some up-close shots I took this Summer of them there. I’m thinking I may use them in a post for my wrap-up of critters and birds in 2023.

Thank you TD. I have a slew of Barn Swallow pics I took at Lake Erie Metropark to use in an upcoming post. They flit around an overlook, but if it’s quiet, they will all go to a small dead tree and sit on a branch clustered together. If something spooks them, they fly off in a hurry. I had some pictures of them last year up close and they were all fluffed up.

  10. What beautiful pictures Linda. That’s not a barn swallow is it?

I do like that intense look too Dave. Sometimes gulls do that as if they are staring at the water (“gazing out to sea”, but then he turned around and that expression changed in a heartbeat!

  12. Barn Swallows, Linda, as you well know, are the most adroit flyers. There aren’t as many around the bridge here any longer. To much pollution and insecticide spraying.

They are amazing Tom and I considered myself lucky to photograph this one as they rarely alight on anything, just diving and swooping and catching/eating insects in mid-air – quite a feat. I also have some Barn Swallows pics taken at a marsh overlook where all the Barn Swallows congregate until they see a human. I stood behind a bush and peeked around. I’ll be sharing those pics next month. Pollution and insecticide is killing our birds, butterflies, bees – where does it end Tom?

  13. Beautiful! What kind of bird is this? It’s not one I’m familiar with.

Thanks Linda! These are Barn Swallows. It is rare when they stop for a minute so you can get a photo of them, although I have some photos of some Barn Swallows at another venue, lined up on a dead tree branch. I took this photo near a covered bridge where these Swallows build their nests in the rafters. They are always swooping and diving for insects which they eat in mid-air, so they rarely stop flying to pose like this. They are pretty, especially when the sun hits their cobalt-blue feathers and then they look almost iridescent.

  15. Way to be an excellent paparazzi. Barn swallows around here rarely sit still long enough to get a photo of them. Well done, even if it looked like you may have interrupted something it was about to do!

Thanks Shelley – yes, he was having a moment of contemplation and I interrupted it and didn’t he/she shoot me a rather disgruntled look? I have a similar photo of a Robin wearing a scowl to use sometime. 🙂 Plus, I have some Barn Swallows who were having a morning chat lined up on a dead branch and I was hiding behind a bush and they didn’t see me – something more to share in 2024 and if I don’t get moving on all these photos, it will be Summer of 2024 … I have three more 5Ks to “report” on, two taken at Heritage Park where this pic was taken (the pictures of the dew on the spider webs) … hopelessly behind, but I’ll still just post twice a week when retired.

I was amazed too Barbara. You never see them pausing as they’re too busy diving and swooping and catching insects in mid-air. It was great as it looked at me for so long, like I had interrupted its thinking. 🙂

Usually it’s just the Robins, which I have dubbed “the original angry birds” that convey such an attitude – they even have their scowl perfected. But this Barn Swallow had some attitude going on as well. 🙂
