About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. Gotta love that super huge nose! 🙂

Yes, that was an especially long carrot nose Barbara. 🙂 I wavered on whether to use this painted rock picture or not. I found the rock on a picnic table at Council Point Park and it’s very small and didn’t photograph well as it had a shellac covering on it. I made a backdrop of a napkin to make it look bigger.

Oh I agree with you Kate! We had another -25 wind chill morning today … went out to run the car and thankfully no snow, but we have snow coming the next two mornings, then back to -20 to -25 on Saturday. Thanks Mother Nature for making Winter come all at one time.

Maybe *some* people love winter, but you know I am not one of them! So glad we are missing the cold temperatures and snow in PA.

I was just thinking of you this morning Laurie with another -25 wind chill. Be glad you are in Florida away from PA’s wintry weather. That painted rock was so small. I am amazed at people’s creativity to paint on an uneven surface that is so small.

We sure see some interesting things on our walks sometimes don’t we Ann Marie? I hope this weather gets better soon – next week maybe we see 40. [I am sorry for the late response; your comment went to SPAM.]

  7. That’s a cute snowman! I agree, Michigan is certainly taking notes and practicing on how to have mighty cold/snowy winters!

  8. Cute rock and very well done by whoever painted it, Linda! Winter is sticking around for awhile but at least we can see the cute things associated with the season 🙂

I thought it was cute too Terri. It’s amazing how good of a job the painter did because the rock was small and I had to enlarge it for the photo. I now think I should have done a comparison to show how small the rock really was. The painted rock craze lives on – probably eight or nine years now.

  9. I think it’s adorable especially if a child made it. I love the painted rocks left at parks, I still have the one I found at the lighthouse park outside in my garden.

I wish I knew Diane … I thought I was still in the Downriver Painted Rocks group; I turned off posts as there were so many, but whenever I found a rock I would post it. I found out I was no longer in the group. It is very small – I should have taken a picture of a coin or something to give a perspective on the size … I had to enlarge it a lot.

I found a rock with a big heart on it. I still have it. Sweet art!!!

I thought so too Tom. It was sitting on the top of a picnic table before this snow/ice/brutally cold weather. I will keep this one too – not too many people walking and keeping their eyes peeled for rocks these days.

      • Yes, these rocks are precious!
Not very many people walking these days at all. Reminds me of an old Ray Bradbury short story of a guy who was arrested for walking… The cops thought that he was insane. 🙄

I didn’t make it to the Park to feed the critters yesterday … it was not the cold so much Tom, though it was an air temp in the teens, but the ice and snow I’d knew would be there kept me homebound. They never plow or shovel and I could just picture having a slip-and-fall event and I’d be the only one dumb enough to be there at the Park.

The snowman is either holding a rake or a very large feather duster. He’s cute, but a little wacky too.

Ha ha – yes, I think a broom Ally. This is actually a very small rock. I should have put a coin or something next to it for perspective. It was on a picnic table at the Park before the snow/ice/brutal weather arrived.

During this frigid weather I think back on the days when snow was exciting. Days off of school, snowmen, hot cocoa… All good things. But I’d rather have some nice moderate warmth.

Like you, I don’t care for this erratic and unsafe weather – 89 people have died this week from it. I said at the height of the hot and humid Summer weather, with our volatile thunderstorms and seven nearby tornadoes the night of August 24th, that I would not complain about the Winter and its snow and cold, but here I am complaining. This is dangerous weather and I’m unhappy with myself that I did not get to the Park today to feed the squirrels and birds. I will often take a few chances navigating my way there/back and around the one-mile pathway where I have three spots I feed them, but on February 12th we had 4.5 inches of snow, some which was melted by torrential rain a few hours later, then a flash freeze, then the brutally cold weather. I didn’t mind layering up for the cold today (temps moderated a bit), but I was worried about the ice … figured my luck, I’d make it there, then too icy to walk and/or I’d take a tumble. We will be mid-40s after Wednesday so I’ll get there … I still feel badly though.

Please don’t beat yourself up. They are wild critters and while they appreciate your supplementing their food, they are used to foraging for themselves. The squirrels, at least, have probably stored quite a few nuts in their burrows. They are better off with you safe and sound and not in rehab for months with a broken hip, or worse. You are getting far colder and snowier weather than we are, so far. February is usually our coldest month and the time of the big storms. It’s being predicted that we may have a mild February this year! Wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all.

Okay, thank you for saying that Zazzy … you make me feel better about not going. I just told myself today I was not going to take a chance – I don’t need to break anything. I don’t like driving in snow/ice either, so it would be the round trip walk, not so bad – it was there where they only plow the parking lot (why plow the parking lot if no one walks on the path??? There are no activities there in Winter.) The birds might go to the neighborhood feeders. I know if they didn’t take food to their burrows, they are not going to get it from the ground as the snow is icy. Next year I will leave a trail of breadcrumbs to my house. 🙂 I know we got spoiled with the warmest December on record, then January has been bad. I’d like February to be mild too. It never hurts my feelings if we don’t have snow!!

The success of the Lions should keep you warm, even if the outdoor weather does not! I’d love to see Detroit make it to the Super Bowl against the defending champion Chiefs… then win it all so your state can hold the pro and college trophies at the same time. On that note, sorry about Harbaugh but you certainly can’t blame him. He’s leaving the program in great shape and aspiring to even bigger accomplishments in Los Angeles. The Chargers and Ravens are already scheduled to meet next season, so it’ll be brother vs. brother. Love that.

Yes, I hope the Lions make it too. They have a lot of grit right now. Our Governor gave her State of the State address last night and opened with this line: “Michigan is home to the best football in the country – from the National Championship Michigan Wolverines to the Detroit Lions”. They have a large contingent of Michigan fans going there, plus I understand there are a lot of fans in California who are from Michigan, so they should have a good showing of fans. It is too bad about Harbaugh – they say the coach that stepped in for Harbaugh, Sherrone Moore, might get the job … I hope so as they played their biggest opponents when he coached. Jim Harbaugh was dipping in his toe in the water the past few years as he never got a Super Bowl ring. Their parents must be proud of those boys and it will be a fun match-up!
