Solo Sandhill Crane  #Wordless Wednesday #Mooned by a crane!

Wordless Wednesday – allow your photo(s) to tell the story.

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Yes, I was excited to find this one Laurie! I’m still hoping to find a colt, though it might be too late in the season for that now. Now I set my sights on a fawn. 🙂

Great shots Linda! They must be getting to know you or they’d take off.

Yes, I wish I’d thought of that and I could have included it in my headline! 🙂 Thank you Wayne – it was funny because this crane gave me a profile, then began to turn around as if to dismiss me. So I guess that showed me didn’t it? I was pretty close to it and it was enjoying the lush grass so I lucked out!

OK, thanks for clarifying Wayne … lots of celestial events going on these days. The planets were aligned for me today – I saw my first Wood Duck at Lake Erie Metropark. And, got some photos of the Mr. and Mrs. Osprey in their platform nest. A good day!

        Great effort!

Yes it is Wayne – Thank you! I was excited about the Osprey because Lake Erie Metropark has built a platform for them and it’s at an intersection, but not a high-traffic area near the marina, so they are quite comfortable up there. I have not used the first photos I got on April 22nd in a post yet, but now I think the female is sitting on eggs which will be born around mid-June (normal time for them in Michigan and this is the same timeline as the Osprey family that lived at the fire station – I’ve not gotten any shots of them that family yet this year). I haven’t looked at yesterday’s photos yet, but I hope they came out well. The male Wood Duck has been on my list for a while and I’ve only seen females. A good day and a beautiful egret with breeding feathers too.

I saw one on his own yesterday, but mostly they seem to be in pairs or groups or sometimes a couple with their colt.

I’ve still not seen the pair in several months. There is a tiny island by the Shore Bridge and I wondered if she was nesting there and keeping the colt there. I only have seen one pair at this Park, usually in the same area.

Miss Linda……………………………I’ve never seen a Sandhill crane………………………..if they’re like their cousins the GBH’s theyre very skittish……………………………when they see people approaching…………………………..and………………………..I’ve only seen the Great Blue herons eat fish in the pond not grass!

    • Linda Schaub says:

They are a lot bigger than a GBH Ann Marie, but not as skittish as the GBH are, especially how they squawk and screech at you when they take off. I only see them eating grass and they get so absorbed with eating grass they don’t notice me!

I’m so glad that you are having a fun day on top of a good weather day. I don’t know anything about sandhill cranes, so I didn’t know what to say. It looks like the sandhill crane is simply enjoying some good grass and seems content. Nice photography, Linda!

Thank you TD! I was here at Lake Erie Metropark today and didn’t see either crane nor their offspring. They are not skittish at all and seem content just to munch on grass.
