About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

You snapped that picture at the perfect time, Linda. Very nice. Those pied-billed grebes are so dainty and cute. They would use a parasol if they could!

Thank you Laurie – I’m glad you liked the photo. That pied-billed grebe was so cute and it was trailing along, far behind its parents and siblings and then stopped for a pause under the parasol! 🙂

I can’t reconcile the photo! Either that’s a very large leaf or a very small bird.

Actually it is both Dave. The Lotus leaves are very large by the time the Lotus blooms peak in late August. This leaf was still “gettin’ there” and this was a juvenile Pied-billed Grebe whose parents and siblings were paddling up ahead of it. The reflection makes the leaf appear even larger.

Miss Linda…………………………………..I’ve never heard of a Pied-Bill Grebe……………………….I know it’s not using the Lotus leaf as an umbrella………………….because Ducks like water……………maybe it’s just admiring itself in the water-mirror!!

Thank you Janis – it was so sweet and its family was up ahead. It decided to linger at the Lotus leaf maybe for a break from the sun, or playing hide-and-go-seek from them?

  9. Beautiful shots of the Pied-Billed Grebe, Linda. Such a cute little thing. We have these here, too, but I haven’t personally seen any. I follow a Facebook birding group that shares these.

Thank you Terri – it was so cute. Its parents and siblings were up ahead of it, but it was lingering under this Lotus leaf. I usually just see the adults, never the juveniles, so this was a first! I also follow a Facebook Metroparks Photographers site, but rarely see these birds featured.

Nice shot, Linda. It’s fun to watch these birds, but I’ve found them to be pretty skittish. They often sink below the water’s surface and never seem to reappear.

Thank you Rebecca! I find that about these birds as well, immediately pulling a disappearing act. This one was a juvenile and its family was up ahead in the marsh and I think it was oblivious to me as it stopped to linger under this Lotus leaf.

I often wonder how they give birds their names. Like this one! He’s very cute

Me too Susan! Who comes up with the bird names or the collective bird and critter names?? He was cute, having strayed from its family, maybe seeking shade or playing hide and go seek from them and seemingly oblivious to me. 🙂

THAT is a heckuva pretty bird. I’d never heard of that one and I don’t think it’s in my bird books. Thanks for sharing!

Glad you liked it Zazzy. It was a juvenile, so much lighter plumage than the adults which are dark brown and the adults have a black ring around their beak, much like a Ring-billed Seagull does. This one was alone, the rest of its family up ahead in the marsh, so it posed nicely for me. 🙂

It was a juvenile and its family was ahead of it – I don’t know if it wanted a little shade or was playing hide-and-go-seek from the family. 🙂 Glad you liked it Tom!

They are quite unusual looking Esther. This was a juvenile and his/her family was up ahead and it lingered behind under that big Lotus leaf, maybe playing hide-and-seek or wanted a photo op!

Thank you very much Barbara! I was at the right place and the right time as that little bird glided over near the huge Lotus leaf. His/her family was up ahead in the marsh, but this one kind of drifted off on its own, playing hide-and-go-seek perhaps?

Thank you! They are kind of unique-looking birds Diane – the adults have a black ring on their beak. This is a juvenile and it was trailing behind its family and so it hung out at the Lotus leaf for a while, maybe hoping for a photo op or maybe playing hide-and-go-seek?
