About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

It must have said something stupid to one of the other egrets, with its foot in its mouth like that. 🙂

Thank you Wayne – I’m glad you liked it. If I remember correctly, I think this was taken the same day as that wonderful excursion when I saw the doe/fawn, the deer eating lotus leaves and the family of Mute swans.

That is a remarkable pose, made possible by a remarkable neck.

Yes Dave, it looks a bit like a ballerina, poised on one foot. Their necks are so long that they sometimes are facing front, but they have twisted their neck to look almost like a pretzel looking backward. You should see them if/when they catch a fish and its traveling down that long neck!

  4. So majestic! (Even with one foot in the air.)

That great egret should feel pretty! She is a looker. Love the shot with the water lotus in the background.

I thought she was a looker too Laurie! She seemed content to pose there with her long leg and foot in the air. 🙂 I felt I lucked out seeing her with that nice background!

They do seem to spend a lot of time primping and pruning but they are beautiful birds.

It’s always fun when you can catch the big birds (or any birds for that matter) doing something besides sitting around!

  8. An egret pedicure! Well captured, Linda! I was out leaf peeping in the fog this morning, by the lake and heard a squawk, and a huge blue heron flew by! I got the tail end, not a great shot though. The water here is warmer than the air temp!

Thank you Terri! I knew the egret pedicure was perfect for the black-and-white Challenge! Those herons sure do like to squawk loud don’t they? That’s incredible – warmer water than temps. I thought of you today because I went to see if I could get some poppin’ colors like you had in your post yesterday and at Elizabeth Park I saw two kayakers and two SUPers … that is the first time I’ve seen SUPers at this park and I can’t say I’ve seen kayakers in October either! It was only in the 50s today, but a gorgeous, sunny day.

  9. I love those black legs against the white feathers Linda, great shot! I didn’t know they are called Great Egrets and that there are Snowy Egrets with yellow feet too.

  12. Sweet pic, Linda!
The parrots also often do pedicures. They are very mediculous about keeping clean and free of deris. I noticed that Praying Matisids are also very fussy about self-grooming.

Love your long fingernails Ms Egret! Your thyroid must be behaving well. My nails are so long I’m going to have to soak them in water like you Ms Egret, to soften my nails enough to give them a nice clip and manicure too.

Magnificent photograph Linda and great title. 🤗
