About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Kate, I had no idea they had so many kinds of Hershey Kisses for Christmas. I was eating the Ghirardelli dark chocolate squares with the highest cacao percentage for many years. The package said a serving was three squares, but I thought that was too much so I only had one, maybe two squares. Then I heard or read that a cacao content of 90% or above could cause arsenic poisoning. So I have stopped eating them immediately. I have two Hershey Kisses a day now and I bought a lot as I always give the mailman chocolate. This year he got Kisses (the chocolate kind).

      • My husband used to eat dark chocolate every day even though he didn’t like it because he read somewhere that it was good for you. He finally stopped and I don’t know why. I never eat something that doesn’t taste good! I like chocolate but not so much in candy. I like mochas (with coffee), brownies, cakes, puddings and ice cream. However, in a pinch where I need a touch of sugar, Hershey kisses are good.

Kate, that’s the only reason I ate dark chocolate – it’s good for your heart and has antioxidants, but it doesn’t really taste good as it is so bitter. Milk chocolate tastes good, but it isn’t healthy due to fat content and sugar. Your husband probably read/saw the same story I did that dark chocolate contains a lot of arsenic and should be eaten in moderation. Once I read that, no more dark chocolate for me! I never got to eat candy growing up, so I never went and bought candy bars or M&Ms, things like that and only occasionally have chocolate now.. However, I have these Kisses left and walking by them tempts me. I have to put the dish in another room and still have lots of Kisses left that are left over. I’d rather have chocolate in baking too.

Yes Debbie – I thought I would help the Hershey Company out so they don’t get acquired by Mondelez. I shared them with my mailman since I always buy him something chocolate for Christmas. 🙂

I thought you would get a kick out of my interpretation of the Metallic Challenge Terri. 🙂 I never knew there were so many different types of Hershey Kisses for Christmas. I shared them with my mail carrier as I usually get him some chocolate for Christmas. Joyeux Noël et bon voyage (Merry Christmas and safe travels).

      • Of course, Linda! Lucky mail carrier! I made a basket of goodies for our post office staff. They know me by name, which makes sense in a small town. It’s a long story but suffice it to say, they’ve been giving me a free PO Box for over a year. Maybe I’ll post about it some day!

Love the French version of Merry Christmas and safe travels–I’ll be learning this soon. For now, Frohe Weihnachten!

Well, you can make good use of that post office as you head off to a sunny and warm clime! My mail carrier is very nice. I cross paths with him nearly every day when I walk/drive to Council Point Park as he is on his route near the Park about the time I head home. He will walk off any Christmas treats – he has an 11-mile route! No matter the language, have a wonderful holiday Terri!

Guaranteed to give you a sugar high, even looking at it on the screen. 🙂 I had no idea that Hershey’s made so many types of Christmas Kisses. I liked the Santa hats too – they are solid milk chocolate, but they also have hot chocolate, sugar cookie, mint truffle, candy cane, cherry cordial and red-and-white Hugs.

Laurie, I had no idea that Hershey’s made so many types of Christmas Kisses. I liked the Santa hats too – they are solid milk chocolate, but they also sell Kisses in hot chocolate, sugar cookie, mint truffle, candy cane, cherry cordial and red-and-white Hugs. If you can’t get the Santa Hats for your grandkids, they also have a Grinch wearing a Santa hat Kiss.

Merry Christmas to you and your family Laurie.

Yes, Debbie – they are yummy and as I poured them out to take photos, I had to sample one or two of each of the Christmas flavors, then I felt kind of sick as some were very sweet. I liked the Santa cap Kisses too – they are plain Hershey’s milk chocolate. I also had no idea they had so many Christmas Kiss flavors – they also have hot chocolate, sugar cookie, mint truffle, candy cane, cherry cordial, red-and-white Hugs and green-and-red Kisses that are the Grinch wearing a Santa cap.

Ha! I bought a small package of the silver kisses plain milk chocolate because I was having a craving for them. There were so many to choose from: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, with or without almond, mint and so on. But I didn’t open it until Tuesday. When I saw your post Wednesday morning, I got a big laugh from your timely post. I didn’t know that there were so many more wrappings to choose from. How many is the limit? I allow myself only seven at a time, but no limit total in a day. Hopefully these are the non-addictive kisses!

TD, I had no idea there were so many types of Hershey’s Kisses. When I saw Terri’s post, I decided it would be fun to do Kisses and their metallic wrapper for my Metallic Challenge. I was just going to go with one bag of gold and one bag of silver Kisses, then saw all the new Christmas flavors – when did that happen? I got one bag of each, but not the Grinch Kisses (green Grinch face with a red hat) or the Cherry Cordial (chocolate covered cherries). I always get my mail carrier something chocolate for Christmas, so I decided I would give him Hershey Kisses in a gift bag this year. When I did the photos, I dumped all the Kisses from all seven bags out and had to sample them all … then I felt a little sick. Some were very sweet! I have to say it took me a few days before I had any more. I looked and seven is a serving, so that’s how you came up with seven then?

That was a first for me seeing them too Barbara! What happened to the Hershey Kisses for Christmas that were regular chocolate Hershey Kisses wrapped in green or red foil? Now they have hot chocolate, sugar cookies, candy cane, mint truffle, cherry cordial, cookies and cream plus plain chocolate Santa Hats and Grinches, which is a Green Kiss with a Grinch face and wearing a Santa hat. I like the Santa hat ones the best – very festive and clever!

Yes, it’s amazing Sandra. The Santa caps were my favorite and they had green Grinch faces with Santa caps too. Lots of new flavors … it wasn’t that long ago it was just red and/or green foil-wrapped Kisses for Christmas, nothing else. Hershey’s went a little wild I think!

Me neither Janis. I used to eat dark chocolate every day for its health benefits, even though it was so bitter, but then I read too much dark chocolate is bad for you as it contains arsenic, so I stopped eating it. I now allow myself two Kisses a day, but having the dish handy is causing temptation, so I may have to move it and the rest of the Hershey’s Kisses I have left after sharing some with my mail carrier. Merry Christmas to you too Janis!

I was surprised to find so many types of Hershey Kisses too Diane. I got the idea of using the Kisses for the post and I always get something chocolate for my mail carrier, so I did share and not eat all those Kisses. This year they had hot chocolate, mint truffle, candy-cane, sugar cookies, cookies and cream and cherry cordial (like a chocolate-covered cherry – I didn’t get them). The plain chocolate came in Santa caps and also Grinch faces with a Santa cap. Glad you liked it Diane!
