About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Unbelievably there were even more that I couldn’t fit into the picture – I would have needed a wide-angle lens. But I noticed the other turtles gave the best spot to the little one! 🙂

awwww. The pond across the street from. Us has a log in the water at the far side. I think it’s covered with turtles but it’s hard to see. I should go out with binoculars or at least my long lens.

There were so many turtles that day I could not fit them all in one picture – I would have needed a wide angle lens. I had to smile as they let the baby have the best spot, totally out of the water. 🙂

Yes, they look so peaceful lined up there – there were more turtles that I couldn’t fit into the picture as I would have needed a wide-angle lens. I thought it was funny, they put the baby up top in the sun, while the rest where partially in the water.

Turtles seem to be always relaxing!

I participated in the naming of the Philadelphia Zoo’s four new Galápagos tortoise hatchlings that are named Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia, after the characters from “The Golden Girls”. The mother is almost 100 years old! Did you participate?

That sounds like fun and how clever to name them after “The Golden Girls” characters. No, I didn’t participate, but I have participated in other animal naming contests in the past. That’s amazing – 100 years old! I think I heard the story or saw headlines that she was a first-time mom?

Glad you liked them Terri. I thought it was funny the bigger turtles let the baby go up to the top so its feet/tail were not in the water. There were more turtles, but I could not get them all in the photo!

Thank you Diane, but truthfully they usually plop in the water when they see me too. I think since I was behind them, they didn’t see me or they were snoozing. 🙂 There were a lot of turtles sleeping at the water’s edge and I couldn’t get them all in the photo.

Oh I love the title for these good-sized turtles.

Thank you Yvette! Bob Seger is so popular around here and that was a big hit for him – perfect for the turtles sunning. That is interesting about the sea turtle hatchlings – very poor odds and I think I have read or seen that when sea turtles hatch en masse, that depending on weather conditions, tide, etc., there are volunteers standing by to help shepherd the hatchlings to water. Here, our turtles build nests not more than 20 feet from water, so once sprung from the nest, the hatchlings have a clear path to water. I once watched a turtle digging a nest and researched it later for my post with pictures I took. I watched the nest daily after it was time for them to hatch, all the while hoping to see the hatchlings emerge in a line from the ground, but they did it in pre-dawn hours.

Hi Linda – the sunspot baby song is one of my favs from bob seger – and I think I still have a video of my girlfriends and I singing it at a bar back in 1991 – I need to convert some 8mm tapes still – and think I still have it

and too bad you missed the hatchlings emerge – 😊😊

Bob Seger lived in my city for a short time and when I was in high school, both he and Alice Cooper played in local high schools until they became famous. That sounds like a fun video Yvette. I took a movie camera into work once at the ad agency. I got back the film which was on a reel but I would like to see it again, so I am thinking of having it converted too. I believe Walgreens does that if I’m not mistaken.

I was bummed to have missed it. There were some other walkers at the Park at that time who were hoping to see them. We saw the hole they came out of though and it was not big. When the female turtle made the nest and laid the eggs, she covered up the nest, so you would not even know it was there.

I have to wait for a sunny day – not happening in the next little stretch of weather forecast rain and cloud. I know where to find them, but they’re not always out. Failing that, one of the nurseries has an indoor pond with quite a few of them which attracts a lot of visitors. It’s just nice to watch them move and to sleep so motionless that you wonder if they are fake!

Yes, unfortunately they only sit on logs and sunbathe when it’s really hot and sunny. I saw a lot of them last week because it was the first really sunny and warm week and I think they all came up to the surface from where they were buried all Winter and were seeking the sunshine. I like seeing them sunbathing. That’s a fun idea for the nursery to have turtles in an indoor pond. The weather is now going to rain through Wednesday here – they said it was supposed to rain off/on today and I looked out and it was beautiful so I walked then went grocery shopping.

I really don’t know anything about turtles. I didn’t know they were buried all Winter, but I suppose that makes sense they hibernate like the fish in fish ponds? I think we have five days of rain too….I will respond to your email tomorrow. My new computer isn’t too bad so far, but I spent an hour last night trying to figure out how to get the backlit key function to work and it’s still not right. Windows 11 doesn’t seem much different, but then I have my old Office Word 2016 on it and it’s only day one.

      • Linda Schaub's avatar Linda Schaub says:

Joni, they bury themselves under the silt at the bottom of a lake/river/pond until it warms up – they go into a torpor-like state which means they don’t breathe very much, kind of like a bear hibernates. Then when it’s warm, they come to the surface. I saw a lot of turtles sunning themselves the week before last when I went to several large parks … it was sunny and hot that week.

Well, they said we’d have a rainy day today and it didn’t rain … they are wrong a lot and I listen to different weather forecasts before I head out … yesterday and today, rain all day, but it didn’t. No worries – take your time as I was very late responding to yours. I am behind and getting here late as I had my art classes and did my project over a couple of times to try and get it right, then had to photograph it to send it to the instructor.

I found Windows 11 very different but then I used Windows 7 for so many years and I had the Windows 10 laptop from work, but didn’t like it, so I only did updates on it, nothing else. I had to stop using the Windows 7 as I could no longer compose a post in WP. So I only used the Windows 10 from July to end of the year and switched to this one. I’m keeping it as a spare. The Windows 10 has a backlit function and sometimes I go to close the lid and the backlit function stays lit for a long time. I never know if it is updating or just does not want to shut down completely. My boss wanted the backlit feature on his so he had the computer guy order it for both of us. It is a 2019 laptop and was not upgradable to Windows 11, so I had to get a new laptop. That’s bad enough getting used to a new laptop, but you need to get acclimated to all the new WP features too.

  14. They are quite social, in a big way! 😊 It’s beneficial too, because the more eyes looking about, the better the chance of spotting a predator sneaking closer.

Yes and I saw so many of them last week Tom. I went out several days since it was such nice weather and every big park where I went there were turtles sunning on logs or on a shoreline. It makes me think it was the first time they emerged from the silt to see the sun since last Fall. More eyes is good, especially with predators lurking about.

I do too Susan and I saw a lot of turtles the week before last because I went out almost every day as it was finally warm and sunny. I think all the turtles finally emerged and were enjoying the sun. I had a pet turtle too and I’m sure it was no life for it in a plastic dish with a ramp and a palm tree. It’s kind of cruel for pet shops to sell them when they could be outside in the wild like these … the equivalent of a zoo when you think about it. [How is Paris?]

Yes I had the same dish for my turtle! And there was a little ramp he could climb up on to be under the palm tree lol. We are just heading to Paris today and we are stopping at Versailles and then going to Paris. Yesterday we were at Juno Beach and Omaha Beach several other spots.

Your tour sounds comprehensive – I am sure it was a sombre experience at Omaha Beach, then the grandiose palace, then Paris in the Springtime. I will enjoy it vicariously here in rainy Michigan. 🙂

That was my problem when I finished college after five years of French, the last two years where we spoke no English in the classroom. At that time there was no internet etc., so I occasionally bought French newspapers to read if I could find them. I was following a Duolingo group on Facebook for a while and some people said to start by buying easy-to-read French books and find French films with subtitles until you don’t need the subtitles. Also, if you use a VPN, someone suggested to set it in France so you HAVE to read. I have a VPN and tried that, but then I couldn’t get a lot of regular internet sites then.

I am still in the group, but I just turned it off as they were always asking why they got the answer wrong (at Duolingo) – they were further along in the course than me. This is just for French-English. I’ll see if they come up with any more ideas and will pass them along.
